People are always asking me what new music I'm listening to. Naturally, these things are bound to happen when one reaches the forefront of the blog community. I begin by telling folks that if they are looking for good new music they are going to be disappointed, because most of it sucks right now. Usually the person asking for my advice will start crying at this point. But I will place a reassuring hand on their shoulder and tell them, honestly, that if they are searching for something cool, I can probably make a recommendation or two. I will note [...]
Yeah, I know that the categories widget in the right side-bar says that there have already been 187 or 188 Sunday Mix Tapes, but this is number 185. I'm sure of it. Maybe the others weren't official SMTs, because maybe I didn't post them on a Sunday! Did you ever think about that, asshole? Well, think about it, then. I'm perfectly fine just sitting here and waiting for you to finish thinking. I don't have anywhere to be until tomorrow morning. Then I have to work. Ugh. I hate my life. RULES for uninitiated noobs : [...]
...if yr looking to kick out the cobwebs from a long weekend, may we recommend you have a listen to The Conformists. Hailing from St. Louis, the band possesses obvious reference points to their northern neighbors in Chicago. The point is further emboldened by the fact that their most recent effort, Three Hundred, was recorded [...]

Photography by Marianne Le Carrour Shhhhhhhhh....... Seriously, be real quiet. I've got The Conformist by Doveman on... This is beautiful. This is 2am, lights out, just a few candles on, just you and your baby, you know what I mean, kinda early in the relationship, when staying up until 2 or 3 or 4am when you have to be at work at 8am wasn't really an issue, where you [...]
![[MP3] New Doveman: "Angel's Share"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2057152_lg.jpg)
Thanks to Dave at The Rawking Refuses To Stop! (well, more specifically, his twitter ,) I was made aware of Doveman 's latest track, "Angel's Share", which just premiered on Stereogum . I fell in love with "Breathing Out" when Liz from the Blisslist posted it way back when, and now we have another breathtaking gem of a song. Doveman is the project of Thomas Bartlett, whose fragile, baritone voice makes your hair stand up straight and your skin tingle. He's joined on his forthcoming album [...]
If you imagine iconic Brit folkie Nick Drake playing piano around sunrise you'd get a bit of what in demand session and touring keyboardist Thomas Barlett - aka Doveman - sounds like. Then you'll need to slow it down. Mostly whisper quiet, with a style that naturally makes you want to lean in closer to take it all in, new album The Conformist (October 20, Brassland) boasts Bartlett's hushed, intimate vocals, a 4am mellow vibe and an A-list group of studio guests. Drawing from some of the artists that he's played with, Doveman's third "solo" project [...]
The Conformists - who are playing a show at the Lemp Neighborhood Arts Center tonight, with Baltimore's Yukon and locals AXO - are working on new music. The quartet's next CD, the follow-up to 2... Local label Collective Records has been rather quiet in the recent past, but on Wednesday sent out a MySpace bulletin announcing its return from the dead. This includes posting some new pictures and a new/old song from sludgy post-rockers In Medias Res . The eclectic label also promises some exciting things in 2009 (which I'll write more on once I find out what they are!). Collective Records alums and current artists include indie dreamers Foundry Field Recordings, post-punk throttlers Bald Eagle, post-rock experimentalists the Conformists and Warhammer 48K, and electro-punks Femme Fatality, along [...]

Hey kids. Today was a long one. Got to work a half-hour before opening to prepare for a big storewide sale, and just walked into Nicci's place five minutes ago. Some of the discounts were larger than my normal employee discount, so I bought a handful of records that I'd been holding onto for a few weeks. Superfuzz Bigmuff , a Steve Reich record, the first Saints album ( I'm Stranded ), and a bunch of seven-inch records (Big Black's Il Duce , Minutemen's Paranoid Time , two Flying Saucer attack 7"s and a Tortoise 7"). All [...]
Last minute show for anyone feeling restless enough to go out: The Conformists and Berry will be playing at the Underground at Red Sea (6511 Delmar Boulevard) tonight. Doors are at 7 p.m., the show's all-ages and tickets are $9. Alas Poor Yorick and the Late Hours are also on the bill. Berry will also be appearing at Vintage Vinyl at 6 p.m. tomorrow, and on my radio show at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow [...]

(Thanks to bands for permission to post songs for download!) (.e) .e www.myspace.com/dottiesound In recent years, home recording software has put the ability to make quality recordings in the palm of nearly every musician's hand. Naturally, this has spawned a new generation of bedroom recording savants who base their compositions on careful layering and overdubbing of multiple motifs (and the occasional charming background noise of a television set or roommate shuffling around in the next [...]

For my final "Friday Top Ten" of the year, I always like to write about the news music that has found its way into my possession over the course of the previous 365 days. In 2005, I think I devoted a paragraph to each of my favorite 25 records. Last year, I wrote three-word reviews for my favorite 50 records. This year, I'm upping the stakes, with one all-encapsulating sentence for the best 100 new records. Strap your safety belts on, because this is going to be a very, very long music-related entry. The Top 100 [...]
