![[Mixtape] Sean O'Connell: All Sweet & Honeycombed](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3717724_lg.jpg)
Bluroc artist Sean O'Connell has played an integral role in a multitude of releases that have come out of the camp. His live instrumentation and production has a very unique sound to it; one that sounds amazing when mashed together with nearly any artist. Sweet & Honeycombed is a mixtape that highlights some of the best of these tracks from the last 6 months, paired with few new joints. Featuring L.E.P. Bogus Boys, Curren$y, McKenzie Eddy, Da$h, Tabi Bonney and others, the tape shines as an example of the producers versatility. Below is a link [...]

You can't go too wrong when you have half of NRBQ as your backing band. And you can't help but make bouyant power pop when you've been decribed as "Jerry Lee Lewis joining Big Star. Doesn't hurt either when you delivery is one part Elvis Costello and one part Graham Parker. All of this serves as an introduction to the new record from former Flying Pigs leader P.J. O'connell . His new record Join The Crowd was just released and is available here . Shall We

Helen O'Connell's vivacious personality and dimpled cheeks might have helped her get noticed by fans in the big band era, but she could sell a song with the best of them. And even if her voice didn't quite have the range enjoyed by some of her contemporaries, she became one of the most popular songbirds around. Like many other performers in the pre-war years, the Ohio-born singer got her start via a combination of radio and touring with some of the many small bands that crisscrossed the country. Her big break came in New York when she [...]
![[Mixtape] Da$h: Caveman Files (Prod. Sean O'Connell)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3287722_lg.jpg)
Da$h is by far the youngest member on Bluroc Records' impressive roster at only 18 years of age. Regardless of his youth, he has put out a dope tape produced by the very talented Sean O'Connell. The tape was released as a consolation for the pushing back of Curren$y and Mckenzie Eddy's Muscle Car Chronicles. While it is short, coming in at a little under 25 minutes, it is dope. It features only Mckenzie Eddy on one track. While it is a slim offering, it is a showcase of Da$h's skills. Hopefully we will be seeing more of [...]
Nothing did more to further the cause of Alternative Nation-building than 120 Minutes, MTV's Sunday-night video showcase of non-mainstream acts. For nearly two decades, the program spanned musical eras from '80s college rock to '00s indie, with grunge, Britpop, punk, industrial, electronica and more in between. MAGNET raids the vaults to resurrect our 120 favorite [...]
![Be Prepared: Superchunk | On The Mouth [Remastered Reissue] | 17 August](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2675935_lg.jpg)
Oh, On The Mouth , how we love you so, ever since we borrowed you from the cool quiet girl on the next cinder block-walled freshman hall over with the coal black-dyed hair and taped you, which girl we secretly credited for the huge gift of turning us on to Superchunk in the spring of 1993. Many, many years later we learned that all along it was our friend Ken's record, and so Ken deserves the credit of pointing us toward Superchunk , which in turn pointed us in the direction of myriad North Carolina bands [...]

As we round the corner on another year and prepare for the the dawning of a brand new decade, we thought it appropriate to take a look at some songs focused on years - or at least songs that reference them in their titles. We left out some obvious choices - "Summer of '693 by Bryan Adams, "19793 by Smashing Pumpkins and "19993 by Prince for example - since they didn't seem to need the exposure. But that still left plenty of great tunes for this, our tenth podcast (ten podcasts in five years - go us!), which spans 73 [...]
What elements go into making a good mixtape? It's a conversation I've had with many...and something I thought about driving home from Milwaukee this afternoon. In my opinion, a good mixtape is something that creates new avenues to travel. It immediately shines a new light to someplace previously unexplored. Know what I mean? About a decade ago, my friend Paul made me a mixtape that literally took me a few years to fully digest. The mix had a few songs on it that were instantly more accessible than others. I explored those band's discographies first and when there [...]

My little slice of the internet is six years old today. Hard to believe, I know. At times over the last year I've felt entirely burnt out on the whole operation, but recently I have learned to enjoy it again. The leafblower is very much a labor of love, and it's changed and adapted right along with me over the last six years. Thanks to everyone that stops by and reads what I have to say (and to those of you that just come for the cat photos - you know who you [...]
Forgive me the Wilson Phillips song, okay? I also give you stuff from Sugar and The Connells who were both ridiculously good... just like that Better Than Ezra song. As always, just find "1990's" in the drop down category list in the sidebar to find all the other posts in this series and if you really love 'em, Stumble this post or any other. Power Pop : Not just an under-appreciated music genre, but the style that made up much of our college radio playlists. In the 1970s it was Big Star who pioneered the sound by combining the melody and harmony of the Beatles with the immediacy of The Who. Cheap Trick was perhaps its best proponent in the next decade, the 1980s. The below bands, most notably the Posies and Teenage Fanclub... A few people have asked if I was planning anything special today as it's the sixth anniversary of 9/11. I don't think so. I said everything I needed to say last year . I'm not sure I have anything to add right now. So instead I'll point you to a few things and let you go to work: - My 9/11 photos - 5th anniversary post from last year - Allan Tannenbaum's photographs: 9-11 Still Killing - Shattered: 9-11 photo [...]
hopefully everyone had an excellent weekend. mine was uneventful other than the fact that i fucked up my lawnmower. i am not mechanically knowledgeable in anyway and i didnt know there is such a thing as too much of a good thing at least when it comes to putting oil in said lawnmower. i pretty [...]
For our Mittwoch frolic we barrow out a couple more from the Fingertips goldmine, one by old friends The Connells, and one more from SXSW 2005. And why not, let's add a current one as well. I could probably say more, but this should suffice. It was 75 degrees in Chicago today and with the early onset of daylight savings time, things seem just about perfect around here. It is that feeling that makes me think of The Connells . This Raleigh, NC band had its heyday in the early 90's but (surprisingly) is still active despite many lineup changes. I recall getting their now long-out-of-print 1993 album Ring for Christmas from my older cousin Steve when I was fifteen years old. The music is essentially jangly southern power-pop with subtle Celtic influences, but is also much more than that. I can [...]
07. The Connells - 1934 08. The Connells - Brighter worlds 09. The Connells - Dial it And that concludes Darker days .

H2FCDs returns with the 9-song debut EP from The Connells, Darker Days . As many others have noticed, this one sounds a lot different from their subsequent work, due to substandard production. Me? I think it adds an air of mystery to the whole affair. Until today, I was not aware of a different version of Darker days that was released in the UK. The UK version has a completely different running order and replaces "Dial it" with "In my head". 01. [...]

Back in the glory days of college radio in the mid-80's, I was a huge fan of The Connells from Raleigh, North Carolina. Purveyors of jangly pop, The Connells had a great run that began with their 1985 album, Darker Days . Their most recent album came out in 2001 and they continue to play the occassional show. The Connells were often written off as REM wannabes - but let's face it, what college radio band back in the Eighties wasn't influenced by Stipe and Company? But [...]

So here's my first contribution to the blogathon of 2006 raising money for the global fund for women . The band I wanted to write about is The Connells . There's a bit about their history on their website. The first time I heard of them was when I was in high school. The Connells came on the scene during the late 80s-early 90s during the music wave that carried Hootie and the Blowfish and Dylan Fence to fame. The Connells crested in 1991 or so with some airtime on the music channels, but [...]
