Takedown demands suggests RIAA isn't particularly concerned with detail

TorrentFreak has been wading through some of the requests that copyright holders have made for Google to delist content under the DCMA. It suggests that perhaps most of the copyright firms have employed a Hulk like "Smash! Smash!" approach to their work: [T]he RIAA asked Google to delist a review of the album Own The Night published on The Guardian. The artist behind the album is Lady Antebellum, signed to RIAA-member Capitol Records. Even more worrying, the RIAA asked Google to delist Last.fm's entire Electro Pop section because they thought it carried [...]

ALEC EMPIRE IN ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE ON COPYRIGHT (german)

ALEC EMPIRE IN ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE ON COPYRIGHT (german) Alec Empire of Atari Teenage Riot in German issue of Rolling Stone Magazine on Copyright: "Mir ist eins klargeworden in den nun schon zwei Jahrzehnten, in denen ich Hunderte von Songs veröffentlicht habe… Die Politik soll sich bitte heraushalten. Die Regulierung des Internets, Zensurmassnahmen, neue Gesetze, die Stasimethoden zulassen …all das verkrüppelt das Internet. Wir brauchen keinen Überwachungsstaat." posted by RZ22 for EYHO Blog Berlin Subscribe To EYHO Blog - It's Free! Follow us on Twitter! Join [...]

The British music industry discovers what victory tastes like

How has the battle against The Pirate Bay gone? The BPI's expensive legal blockade might not be a roaring success , according to TorrentFreak: Yesterday, The Pirate Bay had 12 million more visitors than it has ever had, providing a golden opportunity to educate users on how to circumvent blocks. "We should write a thank you letter to the BPI," a site insider told TorrentFreak. Great news, then: in effect, the BPI have spent a small fortune on giving the Pirate Bay a luxurious advertising campaign. I was amused to spot on Saturday that the [...]

Brazil might have a better idea for collecting royalties

Cory Doctrow, writing on Boing Boing , has welcomed the news that the Brazilian Senate is proposing an overhaul on how royalties are collected and distributed. It's following on from a six month investigation into the affairs of the local copyright collection societies which found 15 directors suspected of fraud and crime. Now, naturally, nobody would suggest that similar misdeeds are taking place at ASCAP or PRS, but the organisations do share a lot of similarities in their organisations and ways of sharing up the royalty cake. Doctrow hopes that this might be a first [...]

Punk Rock Easter (A Mix)

Punk Rock Easter (A Mix) So tomorrow is Easter, and for most of us on the east coast here, that marks the mental beginning of Spring. Chasing payments

Chasing payments Another day, another former acquaintance of a celeb flogging their old pictures to a red top. This time it's The Sun with a front page " picture exclusive " splash of unseen Adele. " Our exclusive pictures show the star had the confidence to go all the way even as a 16-year-old schoolgirl ". The surprise for me was that one of the six " exclusive " shots supposedly taken by her former Brit school classmate Allan Rose was actually taken by me. Captioned " Early hit...singing ballad Daydreamer for classmates " [...]

VIDEO: WHY OUR PATENT, COPYRIGHT AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAWS ARE ALL WRONG

Everything is a Remix Part 4
Our intellectual property laws, meant to help protect inventors and innovators, are a complete mess. Nowhere is that more true than in music, where illegal copying of others' works enabled by the Internet - piracy - is threatening to bring a whole segment of the industry down. But what IS intellectual property? What does it [...]

Michael hacked, son

Yesterday's Sunday Times had a story about Michael Jackson's entire recorded history being lifted from Sony's secure systems . In a spirit of puckish wit, today the NME has liberated the story from behind News International's secure paywall: A source told the paper: "Everything Sony purchased from the Michael Jackson estate was compromised. It caused them to check their systems and they found the breach. There was a degree of sophistication. Sony identified the weakness and plugged the gap." Ah, yes, they plugged the gap that created a weakness which - with a degree of sophistication - [...]

Everything is a Remix

Everything is a Remix Part 4
Just over a week ago Kirby Ferguson released the final installment of his " Everything is a Remix " series. The 4 videos are each about 10 minutes long, and explore the concept of "intellectual property" from a number of angles. Part 1 talks about covering, reworking, sampling, and remixing in music. Part 2 deals with re-appropriation and genre in film. Part 3 discusses the technological evolution of the graphical interface in personal computers. The themes come to a head in Part 4 , which explores the legal aspect [...]

Record labels pirate football game

Oh, dear, major labels - don't you realise that copyright theft is a SERIOUS CRIME? Do we need to send Britney Spears over to remind you that illegally streaming a football game at a VEVO party is no different from stealing a CD from a store? Tut. Tut. Tut. TechCrunch's Jason Kincaid saw ESPN streaming from an unlicensed feed: My hunch is that the team hooked up a computer to the TVs throughout the venue so that they could accomplish this synchronized star-caressing — then, rather than rework their entire setup just [...]

What do you do when Bono says no?

Sorry Bono: The story of our film winning the LA Comedy Shorts Festival
What do you do when Bono and U2 grimly refuse you the rights to use a song, forcing you to pull out of a film festival? This: Moral: There is always a way round the self-importance of Bono. [Thanks to Michael M for the tip] -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

Just like the old days

I suspect the RIAA will be secretly delighted at having been included on Anonymous' attacks on various copyright industry sites; they've been so long eclipsed by the MPAA in the 'trying to shore up a business model that no longer exists' lobbying that they'll just be delighted anyone bothered to take them down. I'm picturing the RIAA trying to look cross while thinking "oh, this is like the good old days when our site was booted offline every three or four days. We've still got it..." On a more serious note, the loss of [...]

RIP MegaUpload?

RIP MegaUpload? . No big deal.. Swizz Beatz was the CEO of MegaUpload.. Yep. Dude was the CEO of MegaUpload. Feds shut them down yesterday. MegaUpload is no more. "Super producer Swizz Beatz is in hot water with Universal Music Group over the promotion of his website Megaupload.com, according to reports that resurfaced today. As CEO of the online storage and file-sharing site, Beatz asked buddies Diddy, Kanye and Will.i.am to spread the buzz in a promotional video, the "Megaupload [...]

Megaupload Just Got Shutdown

It doesn't appear to be connected to yesterday's SOPA protests , but this is pretty significant anyway : The Federal Bureau of Investigation moved against a group of suspected online pirates Thursday, targeting the popular file-sharing website megaupload.com a day after Washington lawmakers were besieged by complaints about legislation designed to crack down on the online sharing of pirated copies of music, movies and other material, people familiar with the matter said. Investigators said there was no connection between arrests in their two-year investigation and the political firestorm that erupted this [...]

Grey Area, Reveling, Copyrights, Luther - 4 Way Split

Like a gang-bang porn, sometimes 4 artists come together to create something incredibly beautiful. When I heard that Black Numbers was releasing a 4 way split between Grey Area, The Reveling, The Copyrights, and Luther, the word anticipation would be an understatement. Shit, I would have picked this up for the two Grey Area tracks alone even if the rest of the songs were flatulence as

Tom Dickins takes on SOPA

As part of the internet sort of went dark yesterday ("I can turn something called javascript off to see Wikipedia. What's javescript, thought? I know, I'll check Wikipe... nooooo...") Tom Dickins made his own protest , sending an open letter to remind Congress that the copyright industry doesn't actually speak for everyone who makes things: This is the economic reality of being a musician in the 21st century. The people who can and want to spend money on your music, will. The people who either can't or won't spend the cash will ALSO support you! They will [...]
