Alternate title: Where's the Beef? Jeepers, one third of the way through already, so if playing this post on your turntable remember to set it to 33⅓ instead of 45rpm. Anyway, yes, day eleven means I couldn't resist the obvious option of turning the volume up a bit. Here are a selection of some mighty fine bands making lovely loud noises. Also, see, I do like music made post 1998. A Fight You Can't Win - Shout First/Loud Words Black International - [...]

So, what's next? Garage band gospel? In fact, yes. We're about to hear a 1966 LP I found in those boxes and boxes of Christian LPs at Goodwill--something I'd have passed on if I hadn't noticed the Tower Records logo. "This should be interesting," I thought. And it is. Standells lite, sort of. Highly produced, highly echo-ized, and very entertaining for a listen or two. The liner notes tell us that the the Crusaders are "five sincere young men--all of them in their teens--who have chosen the Big Beat as the means [...]
The newly formed 4 piece post hardcore act from Glasgow, Crusades, have sent me a link to their new single, Pseudo Andro and I guess they chose the right blog because I have always been a hardcore kid at heart. Perfectly timed face shredding riffage ala early Every Time I Die with shrill vocals, melodic in some parts while till mantaining a heavy constant, Pseudo Andro is a fucking awesome track. No cheesy "brootal" breakdowns, just all out riot. Have a listen: [Crusades - Pseudo Andro] New 4 track ep, Golden Throats, recorded with Brian Rintoul who've previously worked with [...]

It began with Miles Davis and broke down with Kenny G. Jazz Fusion, and the various guises in which it revealed itself, began with the experimental fusion of jazz and rock of Davis' 1968 album Miles In The Sky . The likes of John McLoughlin, Herbie Hancock, Al Di Meola, Chick Corea, Bob James and so on continued in that avant garde vein. But other, more funk and soul oriented musicians, emerged in the 1970s, and many of the avant garde crowd also contributed to the rise of the more accessible form of fusion, the kind that would be [...]

(Photo: Cecilia Kri) Dudes form bands. Dudes join bands. Dudes make lots of great music with bands. Then for one reason or another, dudes leave bands (or decide to launch side-projects). But they rarely stop making music altogether. Let's check in with Jesper Stromblad (ex-In Flames), Antton (ex-Venom) and Jason Shi (ASG) to hear what [...]

This is The Crusaders , live in concert at the Hec Edmundson Pavillion, Seattle, WA, USA, sometime in the springtime of 1973. I have read elsewhere that this is one of the finest unofficial and unreleased live recordings of the band, whether that is true or not, this is simply put, astounding music and musicianship! Their crossover from Jazz to include a mixture of funk and soulful sounds made their music accessible to a huge audience as this gig demonstrates. Some further background leading to this part of the bands long [...]

Malente has got a new EP out on legendary Defected label with the Atlanta based fellow legend Treasure Fingers . This 2 track EP features title track "Crusaders" which is filled infectiously with a funk disco bassline, deep stabs and impeccable hook that makes this production so awesome. The 2nd track on the EP is "Au Revue" & again the guys show their disco pedigree taking a loop & just working it perfectly. Video for crusader below! Treasure Fingers & Malente - Crusaders [...]

Treasure Fingers & Malente's "Crusaders" EP. Out now, guys. Get it.
Treasure Fingers & Malente - "Crusaders" A perfectly normal girl.

After stumbling across DJ Moar's Soundcloud earlier I think this Parisian deserves some extra credit. His Myspace claims he was a "Breaker in 1982, Tagger in 1989, Mc in 1993, Beatmaker Since 1996, Dj Since 2000, Co-owner & A&R of Trad Vibe Records since 2005..." other than that I'm pretty new to his music. But his edits, sometimes a simple manipulation of the original, others a full blown break apart and rebuild, speak for themselves. Check out his Soundcloud for more. As October winds down and we get closer to November, music geeks start going through the albums released in the past year, and "best of" lists begin to take shape. One of the contenders being floated around as best punk album is Crusades' The Sun Is Down And The Night ...

Spaniard disco don Rayko, founder of Rare Wiri Records, has thrown out his edit of Whip & Contagious, a slow-mo funked-out disco groover. Cop the whole release on wax here . Rayko - Contagious [pelski highly recommends] { buy } Hailing from Belgium, Mickey serves up some serious dancefloor disco, with slapping beats and stunted piano chords galore. Disco with a punch. And of course it helps that the delicious vocal sample comes courtesy of US soul and house legend Colenel Abrams: [...]

Sting : Children's Crusade [ purchase ] I can't say that I know all of the reasons this was such a slow week here, but I do know one reason. Our own Boyhowdy lives in Monson MA, which you may know was hit by a tornado on Friday. He and his family are fine now. Boyhowdy responded to this disaster in heroic fashion, with some of his best writing and by sharing music on his own blog, Cover Lay Down . I know our readers will wish him this best [...]

Wayne Henderson was the trombonist with Texas band The Crusaders, he later went on to record with Roy Ayers, but in 1974 he wrote this instrumental disco track for the band. The Crusaders - Stomp and Buck Dance
Ninja Crusade , hailing from Malmö, has released the concept album "Peace Through Superior Firepower", an album with the war in Iraq as a theme: We wanted to write about something that was important for us, but couldn't come up with anything from our own lives that felt relevant. In a way you could say that the album is about the emotions of guilt, from us being spoilt by living in a stable industrial country while people in other countries are being killed by someone who says that he's "liberating them from their chains" (and then [...]
Toki Wright doesn't just have killer music taste, which he showed off in his guest podcast . He is also a gifted MC who wowed us in 2009 with his Rhymesayers debut, A Different Mirror . Since then, he dropped off a free EP, BlackMale , and a series of freestyles and loose tracks. But this summer, he's returning with a proper new project in the form of an EP. Although we have to wait until July to hear the project, he's already dropped his first single, the heavy-hitting, [...]
