World Goth Day: A Nostalgic Mix!

The tunes playing on Radio 6 this morning in tongue-in-cheek honour of National Goth Day made us all nostalgic for our very own black and purple tinged youth, when Wayne Hussey and Andrew Eldritch ruled the airwaves (sort of) and Fields of the Nephilim kept Homepride in business. Here then for your listening and reminiscing pleasure, as the witching hour approaches, a 13 song mixtape down memory lane. In our cloaks and via the graveyard of course, accompanied by legions of squeaking bats. Download The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary mp3 (from [...]

Out This Week 5/22

Out This Week 5/22 A chorus of strong female voices top this week's list of new releases, none more promising than that of young London-via-Ontario singer-songwriter Al Spx, a.k.a. Cold Specks , whose head turning debut, as our Music Director, Don Yates, describes, is "a powerful, emotionally moving set of gospel-steeped folk-pop with a dark, hushed sound featuring muted guitars and solemn piano along with occasional strings, horns and choral backing singers accompanying her velvety, deeply soulful vocals and spiritually brooding lyrics." Singer/actress Aleksa Palladino ramps up the intensity with her Devon Church, as Brooklyn duo Exitmusic makes good on the [...]

World Goth Day: So How Goth Are Skrillex, Paramore, Austra and Florence?

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Pop Culture , Music Appreciation Getty | Getty Today, May 22, is World Goth Day . Besides meaning that you probably shouldn't go outside after dark tonight, it also means there's going to be lots of music played -- and listened to -- by people who wear capes and roll around in graveyards for exercise. (What? Exercise is important!) Here at Spinner we were curious: a [...]

I just got extremely petrified when I saw that Asher Roth has... I just got extremely petrified when I saw that Asher Roth has sampled Cults' classic Summertime jam, "Go Outside". Then I thought to myself, Asher is actually a pretty solid rapper. Clearing my mind from any pre-decided opinions I take a listen, and love what I hear. It's perfect lazy 100 degree weather, hanging in your hammock type music. My only real complaint is that it's way too short.

New releases for the week of May 22, 2012

New releases for the week of May 22, 2012 This week's onslaught on new releases features plenty of beyond-the-grave records and DVDs. Joey Ramone heads up the former, while Dean Martin and The Grateful Dead are covered by the latter. For those more concerned with the living, there's plenty to celebrate there, too. American Idol winner Kris Allen puts out his latest, Thank You Camellia , for instance (pictured), Aziz Ansari will continue to make you laugh with a digital-only release, and there's more from The Cult , Dope Body , JBM , [...]

The Cult: "Choice of Weapon" (album review)

The Cult: "Choice of Weapon" (album review) Let's face it, you pretty much know what you're going to get with every new album from The Cult . They have a hard rock sound that is all their own. They've honed it over the years, but much like AC/DC there have been no real radical changes from the beginning. That should tell you most of what you need to know about their new record Choice of Weapon , but I'll go on anyway. Cuts like "Honey From a Knife", "The Wolf", and the blistering lead single "For the [...]

The Cult - Choice of Weapon

The Cult - Choice of Weapon Disclaimer: I dig The Cult . From way back to "Moya" and "Fatman" from the Southern Death Cult days, I've had an odd fascination with The Cult and Ian Astbury in particular, with his adopted shamanistic persona and incredibly distinct vocal tone. I've followed them through the Death Cult days, through The Cult glory days, all the way through the Holy Barbarians and Astbury's solo stuff, and back again to The Cult . I have all the albums, the singles, the 12"'s, test pressings, picture [...]

Listen: Asher Roth – "Outside"

Listen: Asher Roth – "Outside" Just in time for the summer season, Asher Roth released a brand new song titled "Outside", an ode to the warmth and greatness of the world that isn't online and in front of a computer. The song features a highly-appropriate sample of Cults 's "Go Outside" on the chorus and fresh lines from the former "I Love College" rapper. Instant addition to your summer playlist right here. Asher's Def Jam debut Is This Too Orange? is currently on the way and there's currently no word whether or not [...]

Cults "Everybody Knows"
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music Martin Sanmiguel New York noise pop band Cults are looking to make a dance record for their follow-up to last year's self-titled debut, but singer Madeline Follin doesn't recall how that came about. "I really have no idea," Follin tells Spinner. "I think it was just a product of being on the road and what [singer/guitarist Brian Oblivion's] been listening to lately." [...]

Premiere: Cults – "You Know What I Mean (Take Remix)"

Premiere: Cults – "You Know What I Mean (Take Remix)" If you've taken Cults ' excellent debut out of regular rotation, it's time to reevaluate. Summer is coming up, and the warm guitars and sweet vocals of Madeline Follin are perfect for those days of beach trips, open windows, and cold beverages. But listening to perfect summer music during summer isn't always the move. Los Angeles DJ Take, aka Sweatson Klank, put a different spin on "You Know What I Mean." It's bass driven, heavy, and decidedly darker (but not too dark) than the original. It's full-bodied, but still has an airy, ethereal quality to it. So instead [...]

Concert Review: Spectrals, April 25, Phoenix Concert Theatre

Concert Review: Spectrals, April 25, Phoenix Concert Theatre While Spectrals may owe a sonic debt to garage rock and early rock n' roll ballads, frontman Louis Oliver Jones may be one of the least overtly rock n' roll seeming guys out there. An unassuming, low key demeanor was on display from the beginning of the band's set opening for Cults . After announcing "We're very excited to be here, " he added, "That didn't sound very sincere," recognizing the fact that he wasn't quite at "Hello Cleveland!" or "Scream for me, Long Beach!" levels of enthusiasm. He was, however, definitely genuine and sincere, although there's very little pretense involved with his [...]
