I was talking with a friend the other night about songwriting, and this is a great song: evocative, sad, plunging us right into the middle of the life on the road. That slide guitar feels like a train whistle in the dark, somehow, and the title of this post is a perfect lyric. I've been listening afresh to The Damnwells ' 2006 album Air Stereo all day today, because there is never a Sunday afternoon that doesn't sound better with that record reverberating off the walls. [...]

The biggest struggle when putting together this list is how to rank the albums. What exactly is the difference between a #1 and a #2 album? Without doubt, Viva Brother's "Darling Buds of May" was the song I listened to the most in 2011 and the album it comes from is pretty damn good. But is it my favorite album as a whole? The Damnwells have consistently put out great material and I'm sure I listened to No One Listens to the Band Anymore more, front to back, than any album on the list but did I do that because [...]

October means we're happily knee-deep in baseball, surrounded by seasonal pumpkin ales, and, regrettably, wrist-deep in the slimy insides of jack-o-lanterns. Music has been my quiet oasis. I figure it's high time I stop futzing over my autumn mix and share it already. The fall mix is one of my favorites to make. In addition to being generally hyperaware of everything around me in life, especially subtexts and undercurrents, I notice an acute sharpening of my senses every time the seasons change. It's why I make you guys these seasonal mixes: as everything in the natural world [...]
For a period of time between 2003 and 2006, the (then) Brooklyn-based The Damnwells felt more like a local band than a touring band. If my math is correct (I was a journalism major so math is not my strong suit), The Damnwells played 17-ish shows here during that time, more than many active Columbus bands. But it's been nearly 5 years since the last time they played here (Feb. 2007, opening for Blue October at the LC) and a LOT has changed. Singer Alex [...]

Thanks to YouTube user Fallingardor for filming this. Here's what he/she wrote: A random jam/treat The Damnwells did after everyone left. Only about 20 people got to see this. So amazing and such a treat. This was after Alex and the band talked with every person that stayed after the gig. Such a cool band. Perfect ending when someone shouts "Five more songs" Ha. The Damnwells are on tour this summer and fall supporting their new release, [...]

The Damnwells Fitzgerald's April 5, 2011 Before playing a single note, Alex Dezen, singer for Brooklyn-based rock band The Damnwells, let the audience know what it was in store. He said the band... Continue reading "Last Night: The Damnwells at Fitzgerald's" >

Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Alex Dezen, one-man mainstay and creative force behind The Damnwells , has seen backing bandmembers and record deals come and go over the past decade, even to the point of being the subject of the indie film Golden Days documenting his endless travails with former label Epic. Now independent and with bassist Ted Hudson and a bevy of musicians backing him up, Dezen follows up '09's "free-on-demand" One Last Century with the new, fan-funded album No One Listens to the Band Anymore due March 15. While there is no shortage of [...]

Alex Dezen of The Damnwells and his wife, Angela, dropped by the UCLA Radio station yesterday, December 1st, for an exclusive live performance. Here's one of the songs that they performed, "Feast of Hearts", off of The Damnwells' upcoming 2011 release. It was truly an incredible show. Couldn't tune in or just want to hear it [...]
Alex Dezen of the Damnwells will be playing an exclusive concert tonight, December 1st from 6-7 pm at our very own UCLARadio station. Come down and check it out! Alex has been a SXSW mainstay over the past years and he and the Damnwells have opened for acts including Bob Dylan & The Fray. Alex [...]
Got a great, unexpected email a few weeks ago. Alex from The Damnwells asked if I could hook him up with a solo/acoustic show in Columbus. "Done", I replied and got to work. Actually found him a Sunday night, early evening gig at a bar The Damnwells have played before but, alas, it was not to be as routing wound up leading him in a different direction. Here are the dates Alex will be playing. 11/05 - The Darkroom—Nashville, TN. 8pm.?w/ Josh Fletcher and Dewveall. 11/06 - ?Smith's Olde Bar (Atlanta Room)—Atlanta, GA.?8pm.?w/ [...]
Dear John - My kids listen to the local pop radio station. Every time I hear the very opening of "Half of My Heart", my heart does a quick skip and jump ... Now, I know that you are far too big of a rock star to listen to unknown bands and, let's face it, there are only so many strings on a guitar and only so many notes you can play so you're bound to play something at some point that sounds an awful lot like another band. I'm cool with that and I'm not even accusing [...]
The new Damnwells CD should be out before the end of the year (hopefully before the end of the summer). Here's a track from the CD, "She Goes Around".
1. Magic Kids I'm not entirely convinced the Magic Kids are for real. The group's debut, Memphis, due in stores in late August, sounds like an obscure gem put out by a California high school glee club in 1974. Looking for influences? Try The Beach Boys, The Hollies, The Partridge Family, and The Turtles. DOWNLOAD: Magic Kids - "Summer" 2. I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House Alex from In Music We Trust has been singing this [...]
One Last Century is the third album for The Damnwells and follows on the heels of the much loved Air Stereo . Unlike the previous two, this album has been offered as a free download from their website so if you are a fan and haven't got this album yet, go now and get it. This is a very good album. I'm not big on the alt/country thing but Alex Dezen et. al. have recorded some very nice tunes on this album. The first song, Soundtrack has some of [...]
