There are no songs that I hate to love more than Q-Lazzarus's - Goodbye Horses & Mike Smiley's - Magic . I first remember Magic while watching that eerie scene in Ghostbusters when that dick-less, Peck shuts down the Ecto Containment Unit unleashing a fury of pissed off ectoplasm across New York city. The scene itself wouldn't be nearly effective without the aid of Mick's haunting rhythms. I could do with out the first 2 minutes of the track, but Mick makes it well worth wait in the final half. [...]

Erol Alkan & Richard Norris, otherwise known as Beyond the Wizards Sleeve have been remixing tracks on and off over the past few years. The two have just released a compilation of their body of work called " Reanimations Vol.1 " . What sets their portfolio apart from others is their ability to give their specimens an entirely different identity. Often blending in a variety of foreign substances and textures into their re-animations. Below is a personal favorite of their work. It just seems like a perfect fit for a trippy remix duo to [...]
The Over the Top Festival is happening this weekend in Toronto! Music and film and theatre. It's nuts, and all organized by one guy (Eric Warner, with help from his friends). Music is what most interests me, so here's what you need to know to make the best of your Thursday through Saturday. There are advance tickets for many of the shows, available at Rotate This and Soundscapes . You can also purchase a festival pass, which gets you into all the music, films, and plays (but not " The Book of Judith "). Tickets [...]

A few covers that have been tickling mine ears. Enjoy! Sweet Child o' Mine - Alex Cornish (Guns & Roses) This Charming Man - Stars (The Smiths) Paper Planes - Pale Young Gentlemen (MIA)

(photo: Myspace) I love getting something special in the mail, be it digital or physical mail. On Thursday, I got a concise email from France, specifically from a duo who record under the name The Belinda Butchers (an homage to My Bloody Valentine's ethereal-voiced guitarist), who sent me an unexpected treat: a cover of The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart's "This Love Is Fucking Right!". The 'Butchers distill the song down to its purest elements: guitars, vocals, and ambient backing track. They accomplish two things: a) demonstrate their skills [...]

The end of 60's flushed out a band from the trailer parks of mid Michigan with a fresh gritty, "white trash" sound. Iggy once mentioned that he based The Stooges sound loosely on the industrial noises he heard as an adolescent at the local auto plants, around the great city of Detroit. "Clang Clang, Bang Bang the more irritating the better" . This track has always resembled that raw explosiveness, that for me, rock is all about. The Stooges - Down on the Street

Who : The Darcys who previously brought us Strange Fits . What : I'm actually not that familiar with Final Fantasy 's original version of this song. Think I'll check that one out first, right before I find out who actually owns the CN Tower. The Darcys are heading across Canada on the 24th, ocean to ocean ( myspace ). Song : The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead .

I hate remixes. I suppose that it's because I have a hard enough time trying to keep up with new music that I don't need to try and keep up with new remixes of new music that I haven't even heard yet. However, these days I am really into bands from Halifax, Final Fantasy and small intimate shows. Which brings me to this... Halifax based The Darcys are kicking off a three month Canadian tour this Thursday night, March 26th at the Whippersnapper Gallery. To help promote the tour, the band is [...]

New Englanders Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino were Brooklyn college students who started out with a plan to keep things simple and fun. The duo that became Matt & Kim maintained that do it yourself approach in their debut self-titled album three years ago. Their live act has been described by some as " what happens when you mix Red Bull with Coke and even more sugar — and then give three bottles of it to musicians ". Matt & Kim have been featuring their new album " Grand ", while touring [...]

During the brief period before the storm that was Bootsy Collins and George Clinton collided, providing us Parliament, Funkadelic cut three venomous LP's ( Free Your Mind... And Your Ass Will Follow, Funkadelic, Maggot Brain) . These three little treat bags delivered nothing but a full wrap sheet of rock infused, blues, funk, and soul. Unfortunately these gems get lost in the shuffle a bit when compared to George's later collaborations with Parliment. They also serve as a nice little bridge between the psychedelic sounds of the 60's [...]

The Toronto-Halifax band the Darcys' love their beards. And they're also covering Final Fantasy's the "CN Tower Belongs to the Dead". Now, I don't know how these two things are related... Darcys - The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead (Final Fantasy Cover) (mp3) (buy)
The CN Tower is built upon our bones! The CN Tower will always be our home! www.thedarcys.ca MP3:: The Darcys - The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead (Final Fantasy Cover)

"A person who obessessed with and seeks out personal interaction with celebrities. The desired interaction is often, but not necessarily, sexual in nature." Portland Oregon's, StarFucker sound has been described as "Disarmingly upbeat and catchy electro-pop pummeled home with dual drumsets and layers upon layer of entrancing loops and samples." Starfucker - Florida Starfucker - Girls Just Want to Have Fun (Cindy Lauper Cover) For you katz lucky enough to live close to the [...]

Last week I had been listening to both A Mountain Is A Mouth and You Will Land With A Thud rather extensively, so my enthusiasm for Saturday night's show was sitting at a comfortable level of antsy. I almost always have fun when I go to a live show (wouldn't be doing this if I didn't) but I have to say that it's been quite a while since I've had THIS much fun at a concert! The audience was receptive, the bands were tight and there was a certain level of uplift in the air. [...]

We haven't had many contests in awhile and we got a huge prize pack to give away. There's an awesome prize pack available to people living in the city of Toronto. The Tom Fun Orchestra , Bruce Peninsula and The Darcys are playing a show at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern on a Saturday January 31st. All 3 acts have had considerable fan fare with Tom Fun Orchestra touring cross-country, and Bruce Pennisula touring numerous spots across the province (including a live performance at Soundscapes ). Here are the contents of the prize pack: [...]

THE TOM FUN ORCHESTRA - YOU WILL LAND WITH A THUD The press release I received for Cape Breton's Tom Fun Orchestra described them as Tom Waits singing lead for The Arcade Fire . In my experience, I've learned that press releases need to be taken with a grain of salt since they usually drop big names in order to grab a person's attention, even though, more often than not, the artist sounds nothing like what the big name comparisons would suggest. (BTW: [...]

myspace While debating how much I want to dive into the new Bruce Peninsula – I mean, it's over a month before the "physical" release date – I noticed that the Halifax/Toronto band The Darcys is opening up for the collective in Toronto on January 31st. Now, I'm not one to get filled up with pride about my alma mater, but the Darcy's were formed during their days at University of King's in Halifax, a school that counts this blogger as one of their most valued former students. I know [...]

Who : The Darcys between Toronto and Halifax. What : It starts with childrens voices in the background. Echoed handclaps next just before the words and guitar join. Soon enough we hear the drums. It all comes together in what I'd call my song for the week, Strange Fits by The Darcys . Oddly, I've always seen this band name around in the Toronto scene, never had a chance to see them perform. Interested to hear this one live (they play their third annual Christmas show at Smiling [...]

Last night cheap beer at OAP turned into cheap beer AND incredible live music, thanks to the Halifax/Toronto based band, The Darcys. After sitting down with my first $2 beer, the band came on stage and the combination of the smooth vocals and build up of guitar and bass and keyboard grabbed my complete attention, and the band started playing songs that were bursting with incredible energy and unity, and even performed covers of Fleetwood Mac and Final Fantasy, which got me dancing like mad in the middle of the field. After the performance we talked with the band and [...]

It's difficult for me to explain why some guitar-based indie rock works, and some just doesn't. There's a lot of it out there. It's either fantastic, or completely boring. And I think a lot of it has to do with where the band comes from. For example, earlier this week I saw a guitar-based indie band from Stillwater, Oklahoma and I was won over by their slanted take on the familiar style (I may be alone in this ). There's just something about weirdos from Oklahoma (see also: Flaming Lips, Evangelicals) making off-kilter, intriguing music. Having never been to [...]
