with Arietta, Songs From A Room and The Darcy's I have to admit that I wasn't prepared to bid adieu to the boys in Oh No Forest Fires so early on in their career. The announcement of their breakup was a shock to say the least, considering the fact that, in my mind, they were just getting warmed up. Rajiv released a statement just prior to the show which indicated that there were no hard feelings and they even recorded a new EP to [...]

These fellas from Brooklyn put together some of the slickest grooves I have heard in a long time. Their sound is one of a distinct playful mashup similar to the Avalanches (If anyone can remember them). Each song seems to top the other. Javelin's Debut album, No Mas is scheduled to come out on April 20th. Keep your ear to the ground. I had a difficult time choosing what particular trax to post. I may have went a little overboard, however I promise you they do not disappoint [...]

Two nights ago I saw The Darcys and The Wooden Sky perform at Algonquin College. The Darcys opened and mostly played songs from their new album "Young Believers" which has yet to have a release date. They've been on a mini-tour of sorts across Ontario previewing and promoting the new album. Here's a list of songs they played (most of these titles haven't even been announced yet): 100 Mile House Des Animaux House Built Around Your Voice Don't Bleed Me Shakin' Down the Old [...]

"With The Dears frontman Murray Lightburn as producer, the band holed up in Montreal's Mountain City Studio to lay down the 10 tracks that will be released as Young Believers later this year (date to be announced). The band's last official release was a cover of Final Fantasy's "The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead" in 2009. However, Young Believers will mark their first substantial release since their critically acclaimed debut Endless Water, in 2007". The Darcys : House Built Around Your Voice Learn More [...]

Last year I published a brief post referring to Easy Star All-stars rendition of the Radiohead's OK Computer titled, Radiodread . This time the group is back and take on one of the seminal Beatles albums. Lonely Hearts Dub Band is littered with Easy Stars usual mix of neck bobbing reggae licks. I particularly enjoyed their rendition of the A Day in the Life. These guys are on my hit list to see live. Easy Star All-Stars - A Day in the Life

While we wait for the new The Darcys album. Got a chance to listen to their debut album called Endless Water which was released in 2007. The Darcys is a band from Toronto. Their music is indie rock and Myspace says "Shoegaze". Which I haven't grasp what shoegaze sounds and looks like. Still haven't seen them live but heard good responses from those that have. But did meet some of the members at NXNE while at Lees Palace where one of the members got some cuts on his face. Upon listening to [...]

Matt Dillon's soul patch was hands-down the best part about the movie Singles, so it makes sense we bestow some praise for a new section we are launching based on singles. We try to focus on records, but sometimes (ok, most times) you probably care more about the song than our jibber jabber. We do nothing if not cater to you loyal reader. You might remember a few weeks ago I mentioned the new track from The Darcys was kicking my ass. It's from the upcoming album, Young Believers , and if House [...]

The Darcys - The CN Tower Belongs to the Dead [Final Fantasy]
Ah the internet. You giveth and you taketh away. The young scamps from Alberta - known to you all as The Outdoor Miners - tried to get us a song in time for our EPs list, but their internet crapped out like the Saints last night (or, like the Steelers the last 5 f*cking weeks I guess). Alec and Peter felt so bad about it they sent over a nice little track for us to post after the fact. It's called Melony and it continues to show the potential this outfit offers up on [...]

A couple Saturday nights ago (21 Nov) I went to the Garrison to see one of my favourite bands, Two Hours Traffic , and a couple good local acts. The Garrison is the newest downtown venue for indie bands and DJ nights. Located in the Dundas & Ossington neighbourhood, it's just a stone's throw from the Dakota Tavern , and kitty-corner to a handful of trendy bars. I've been going there regularly since it opened in late October, usually because it is home to the Sunday-night series Wavelength . This particular show was all-ages, though [...]

These fellas have caught my attention a recently. The Heavy are an English indie rock band from Noid, England. Combining crunchy guitar, funky horns, and Prince-like vocals, The Heavy play a mix of guitar heavy, hip-hop soul. The Heavy - Sixteen The Heavy - That Kind of Man The Heavy - Love Like That

In 1969 Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker disbanded from James Brown to peruse other interests, leaving James to find replacements. He recruited The Pacemakers , a Cincinnati based band featuring a young Bootsy Collins on Bass. What Bootsy brought was a vitality and energy that seemed to go hand in hand with Browns raw brand of infectious music. This new band was based entirely on rhythm and brought Brown's energy to a new level. Unfortunately this collaboration only lasted one year as Bootsy wanted to push the funk farther than James would allow. [...]

Gone are the days of Kraughtrock with the likes of Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, and Cluster, but Germany remains a fertile hot bed for some of the finest intelligent electronic music. Some of Canada's strongest electronic musicians such as Richie Hawtin, and Scott Montieth have relocated to Germany just to be immersed this sonic creativity. Kompakt is a label that does an excellent job squeezing out as much electronic juice as possible out of these minds. This year marks the 10th Editi on of their Total [...]

The former Smashing Pumpkins minx makes an eye-opening call to this radio station in CHI-Town. CLICK THE PIC... you have to hear this shit! No one's heard from D'arcy in years. WAWAWAWA. Horse farmer? Manson's dad? Davy Jones? =0*HM*
After a few pops while I was back in Ontario, a friend of mine and I were having good discussion on music when we stumbled upon the topic of 60's garage bands . A number independent bands in the 60's such as The Count Five , The Creation, and The Music Machine were laying the ground work for what was later known as punk. It was their free spirited low production sound that helped influence a generation of New York punks after them such as Talking heads, The Pretenders and The Ramones. [...]

Playboy has Music? Yep. I guess they have a new video series called "Uncovered" which has some videos of artist doing covers. This week is Dinosaur Jr, who covers The Cure's "Just Like Heaven". I think the Panic Manual would definitely like an invite to the Playboy mansion to witness some of these tapings. Hint Hint. Other upcoming videos include The Dears covering Metric and A Camp covering Leon Payne . Dinosaur Jr will also play 8 Canadian dates, with Pink Mountaintops or Lou Barlow opening up. Here are the dates: [...]

The heat is officially upon us, and I'm looking forward to heading back east for my annual summertime festivities. It's also at this time every year that I feel the need to compliment those summer festivities with solid sounds! A few B's on some sort of patio with some appropriate summer time toonz. First track here being a fun little piece by calypso legend Lord Kitchener. WARNING this track is littered with humorous sexual innuendo and is not intended for people who aren't drunk or not drinking. The second track is extracted from the [...]

Frank Yang With a lead-up week that had included rather insane shows from each of Patrick Wolf , Phoenix and The Dead Weather , it wasn't surprising that I was half-dead before NXNE even began this year. I don't even want to speculate what kind of shape I'd been in if I hadn't taken the week off from work. But the will and energy to hit the clubs would be found. Somehow. There were many options to kick things off, but I opted for the secret-but-not-really show [...]

Mason Hastie If there's one thing I learned from being on the Grand Jury for last year's Polaris Prize , it's that the duties of being a regular jurist are far, far, far, far less stressful. There's a real burden of responsibility when you're one of the 11 whose duty it is to choose Canada's "best album of the year", forcing you to consider each nominee on the short list objectively, checking as much as possible personal biases towards genre, personality, history, whatever. It's a lot of work. And while in [...]
