Boston duo Magic Man (Sam Lee & Alex Caplow) debuted in January with Real Life Color on the brilliant Arcade Sound Ltd. (Blackbird Blackbird, Millionyoung, Teen Daze). Written on the organic farms of the French countryside, at "a chateau, a farm, a circus festival, and a beach cottage and brought back home to the states for further recording and editing (most of which was done in small dorm rooms and transmitted between band members with the aid of the world wide web)," the album is a beautiful mix of electronic tinkering, [...]

It's ok, big girls are in style this year. Queen knew what was up when they proclaimed fat bottomed girls make the world go 'round, and now it looks like Darlings are jumping on the badonka donk wagon. Actually, I have no idea the lyrical specifics behind the single "Big Girl," and while it's a new recording for their soon to be released Warma EP on Famous Class, Darlings have been playing it out for a while. If you didn't know already, I dig it, even if the recorded version sounds a bit Weezer...
Greenwich Village indie garage-rock foursome follow-up 2009's critical praise with a new EP. New York's Darlings formed a few years ago in the depths of Greenwich Village, with these four young pals slowly building word of mouth through house parties and local gigs. 2009 saw the release of Yeah I Know , which drew major praise from the likes of the New York Times, who called the band's debut "a splash of lo-fi elegance". Following up that success, Darlings are releasing a new EP, Warma, this fall via...
We've arrived at the second to last mega-MP3 summer songs playlist/mixtape for 2010 as summer slips away, the days get shorter, the heat cools off, and people are planning fall activities; in the cafe, we refer to them as the Last Blasts mixes. Enjoy. I've been meaning to post some Darlings . I saw them in New York after getting a "hot tip" from Dinosaur Feathers who i'd just booked ((who play aug 13th here)). They were so rad. The party was put on by their record label, Famous Class and was in this rad spot, Death By Audio an art gallery type thing. Maybe it had something to do with the newly acquired marijuana, the spring time, being in a foreign country or being newly in love with New York but i was definitely [...]

I couldn't choose one show to recommend for Friday. You couldn't possibly only go to one show tomorrow night. Northside has packed Williamsburg with an absurd amount of good bands this Friday, and I'm going to give you a run down of all the ones I think are worth dropping by. First and foremost, Famous Class records are hosting their own show at Death By Audio, with the abovementioned bands. Grooms, Darlings, and Sisters are three of my absolute favorites all in one place, so this show gets my first nod. Happening a little further out, at Bar [...]
As long as this doesn't get crazy packed it'll be good times. My pals Sundelles and Wizardry are playing along with Motel Motel, Darlings and some other rad bands. Get going, it already started.
Well, it's almost time for 2nd Northside Festival , during which The L Magazine takes over the Williamsburg and Greenpoint music venues for a few days. The Northside Festival will feature over 300 bands this year. Some relatively big names are playing ( Liars , The Fiery Furnaces , Fucked Up , Polvo ). But what this is really about is the chance to see lots of bands in small venues. It's an indie music overdose. You can get an idea of what it's like by listening to this radio [...]

You can check out my photos from the Sisters/Darlings show at Brooklyn Bowl last week over at the wonderful Impose . It was a good show. As I expected, neither of the bands drew out a large enough crowd to even remotely make Brooklyn Bowl feel un-empty, but the show still had a way better vibe than the semi-packed Wavves performance a few weeks back. Darlings played a whole bunch of new songs, most of which sounded good- more of the same Strokesian rock that made me love Yeah I Know . Their songs are so [...]
Monday: Darlings, The Sneaks, Cybelle Blood, + Night Reports @ Bruar Falls 8pm FREE [ info ] While Monday may just be the most depressing day of the week, it can be made better when you know there's a kick ass free show lined up to end your day. Tonight three bands I've never heard of and Darlings open the doors to Bruar Falls for a free show. Now I know there's always a bit of trepidation when you don't know the bands, but since there's no cover or [...]

Last Sabbath, bloody Sabbath, far too much heaviness took place in DC to comprehend. This, for me, is a very good sign, and hopefully a harbinger of things to come (or better yet, as the phrase goes, "a harbinger of doom.") There was the juggernaut of High on Fire, playing with Priestess, Black Cobra, and Bison B.C., at the Black Cat; the giant of Red Sparowes (members of Isis, Neurosis, Angel Hair, and more, FYI), Doomriders, and Fang Island, at the Rock & Roll Hotel; [...]

Darlings are a long-running NYRM favorite, and it's been a long time since I've recommended one of their shows. AND I'm hoping it's been long enough that we might get to hear a few new songs at this show. I have high hopes that this band will evolve into something even better on the next album, and I'm thinking it's about the right time to start hearing a progression in their sound. Sisters is a two person fun rocking outfit, definitely for fans of bands like JEFF the Brotherhood. I'm not sure either of these bands can fill out a [...]
Monday: LCD Soundsystem @ Webster Hall 8:30pm $20 [ tix ] At this point tickets are probably sold out to this show and going for hundreds of dollars on Craigslist, but I somehow managed to snag a ticket on Friday and really the excitement bubbling within me is too much to ignore or to allow me to point you towards another show. So try your luck, check on eBay, or find a friend with an extra ticket, do what you have to because based on the reports from last [...]
