The Datsuns Kiwi rockers, The Datsuns, have been touring and making music for the last ten years. After stopping for a break in 2008, the boys are prepped for their return, starting with Leopallooza. Charlotte Gay joined their guitarist Christian Livingstone. You guys seem to always be on the move, you've just driven down from London today right? Yeah we all stayed over in London last night, we've just come back from Indonesia, we went to London and then onto [...]

When The Datsuns emerged on the scene at the turn of the century, their testosterone fueled hard rock sound was exactly what I was into at the time. The New Zealand band's self titled debut was in heavy rotation on my CD player at a time when garage rock that was heavy on the swagger and nil on the social commentary was my definition of a perfect soundtrack to a Saturday night. Since then, I've mellowed out quite a bit, and although there is still a steady diet of rock feeding my musical appetite these days, [...]

On this humid summer Wednesday, the AC in Ukrainian Village's The Empty Bottle is pumping so hard the "Emergency Exit Only" sign at the back of the bar flaps fitfully back and forth. The crowd awaiting the arrival of New Zealand garage rockers The Datsuns is a mixture of old and young, simultaneously laid back and anxious. This is one of only a handful of stateside performances by the band as part of their short North American tour. The divey, yet charming and intimate venue seems a fitting home for [...]

I actually saw The Datsuns back in 2004 opening for The Pixies, and the band recently surprised me when they jumped back onto the scene with a new album , and now they are making it back to North America for a string of tour dates. It's only hitting up the big cities (at least for now), but we've posted all of the dates announced below. The Datsuns tour dates: 07/13 - Café Du Nord - San Francisco, CA 07/14 - Echo - Los Angeles, CA 07/17 - TT [...]

After being released in Europe at the end of last year, The Datsuns' fourth disc, Head Stunts , was finally released in the US this month. Like The Datsuns' past work, this is another slab of high-energy power-punk. The disc starts off with a bang as the lead-off track "Human Error" has all of hooks of a perfect radio single. While Head Stunts is predominately composed of anthemic rock rave-ups, there are some dabbling into psychedelic/garage rock on cuts like "Hey! Paranoid People" (which prominently features Christian Livingstone's swampy Hammond organ) and the [...]

There's plenty to check out this week, but not much worth mentioning. Maybe The Datsuns if you like hobbits, The Crystal Method if you're stuck in the 90s or Passion Pit if you don't mind awkwardly-named bands. :: Aiden , Knives (Victory) :: The Belleville Outfit , Time to Stand (Thirty Tigers) :: Better Than Ezra , Paper Empire (Red Distribution) :: Big Business , Mind the Drift (Hydra [...]
Oh hey, garage rock! From New Zealand! I thought there were only sheep and hobbits and wizards there. Maybe these guys are hobbits with guitars and drums, which totally explains so many things . But okay, these are pretty good songs. I wouldn't say anything stands out in particular, but it's consistently decent rock music. It's the kind of positive party music that would be a lot of fun live if the crowd isn't a bunch of dudes that don't like to move around at shows to avoid embarrassment. (Full disclosure: sometimes I am [...]

The Datsuns are one of New Zealand's finest rock bands. Their new album Head Stunts is continuation of their loud garage rock. The songs are all about messing with peoples minds, the album title is anagram the band's name. Lyrically the band keeps growing, so it's worth the effort to listen carefully to the vocals. The album was recorded in Sweden, is self-produced and sounds fresh and energetic. New drummer Ben Cole fits right in - no wonder since he has been friends with founder member Rudolf de Borst [...]

I haven't heard much from the Datsuns since their US label, V2, went away a few years back. However, the band have found a new label (Cooking Vinyl) and are apparently gearing up for the release of their next record. According to the band's press release: The Datsuns are set to release their fourth album, Head Stunts, on May 12th. Featuring 12 new tracks, "Head Stunts" was recorded earlier this year in Sweden, and is self-produced. From the full-throttle opener Human Error, to the dirtbike guitars and frenzied pummelling of Yeah, Yeah, [...]

Projected on the curtains of the good friend of the strange television, carrioncart : See color here .

The first track, Human Error bursts out of nowhere and is immediately 'in your face' this is a fast and loud rock track, the music is great but little else, it borders on metal but isn't quite there. The second track, Hey! Paranoid People boasts much better lyrics and vocals but this time the overall sound isn't as good. Track three, Your Bones reminds me a little of a Raconteurs track though it's not of the same calibre; however this is a vast improvement on the previous two. Track six, Eye Of The Needle really won me [...]
