With Beavis and Butthead back on the air after nearly a decade-and-a-half hiatus, I thought I'd take a moment to offer my belated thanks to these two badly-drawn boys for turning me on to a couple of bands that otherwise would have escaped my attention. Even before MTV got out of the music video business, Beavis and Butthead were airing videos that would never have gotten any airplay via mainstream channels. Presumably channeling Mike Judge's musical tastes, Beavis and Butthead provided US viewers with the first glimpses of several well-below-the-radar bands including the Dead Milkmen, the Cramps, Daisy [...]

Photo by Nina Sabatino From NPR Music : Even before The Dead Milkmen found a national following, the sardonic Philadelphia band was a staple of 1980s underground and college-radio rock. Already boasting legendary status within the local music scene, the group reached national commercial success in the late '80s with the release of its album Beelzebubba , whose single "Punk Rock Girl" landed the band on MTV and the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart. As the group's sound became mellower and more polished over the years, The Dead Milkmen faded from [...]

Photo by Nina Sabatino The Dead Milkmen recording a Key Studio Session in early 2010 Back in March, Philadelphia punk-rock icons The Dead Milkmen released The King In Yellow , the band's first studio album in more than 15 years. Last weekend, the band held the official record-release party for the album at a sold-out show at Kung Fu Necktie. Of course, at such a small venue, tickets went fast. If you missed that show (or, even if you didn't), you can see the band perform next Friday [...]
The Dead Milkmen – The King in Yellow. Stream to the entire album at The Dead Milkmen's website. The King in Yellow is the ninth Dead Milkmen album and the band's first in 16 years, which they self-released. The seventeen songs have the same sardonic lyrics and jangly music that made them popular in the 80s and 90s. With songs like "Fauxhemia," "Some Young Guy," and "Commodify Your Dissent," the band shows they are back in lasting form.

Everyone's favorite obnoxious punk band is back, after only 16 years! That's right, I'm talking about The Dead Milkmen, who have an all-new album recorded and ready to go. The Milkmen broke up in 1995, but got back together in 2008 after playing a few shows that went well for them. After composing new songs and touring for a few years, they began recording The King In Yellow in 2010, and released the hard copy of that album today. I've been pretty freakin' happy since I found out, and I imagine some of our readers ( and authors [...]

The folks over at Kung Fu Necktie are having themselves quite a Tuesday. Earlier today, it was announced that Dr. Dog would perform at KFN a week from today. (Tickets, predictably, immediately sold out.) Well, just now, The Dead Milkmen have announced that they'll be performing their new album, The King In Yellow, at a special "Hometown Holiday Show" at KFN on December 10th. Tickets to the show are $15 and available here ; all tickets holders will get a free download card for the new album.
Like most teenagers, I spent much of my four years in high school trying to figure out where I fit in.

The Dead Milkmen have launched a full album stream of their newly release physical album The King in Yellow which dropped today . The record was released digitally in March of 2011 . The King in Yellow is the band's first set of new material since 1995's Stoney's Extra Stout (Pig) . Check out the album here .
The Dead Milkmen were a special band to many in the '80s. While there were those that gravitated toward underground punk music with an aggressive edge and political bent, there were some of us

If you are a fan of Potholes, you are a fan of Open Mike Eagle . An MC that has been recording since 2004, Open Mike has paved a unique path for himself in hip-hop. With his most recent release Rappers Will Die Of Natural Causes only a few months behind us, we thought it would be wise to get even more familiar with an artist we already know so much about. Continuing our Potholes Podcast series, Open Mike lends us his time to spin a rather eclectic mix of tracks, ranging from [...]

[Welcome to the FYF hangover, Sunday edition. Hope to have our coverage posted later today. Meanwhile:] Sunday fun: ► Mellowing out on this holiday weekend? The Sweet Hurt and Ry Cuming join residents Daniel Ahearn and the Jones for tonight's edition of the Sunday Night Jones at the Satellite. The Buzz Bands LA-presented night features a songwriters circle after the performances. Good vibe. ► Partying hard this holiday weekend: IDentity Festiva l goes [...]

A festival and other festivities: ► Hard to believe there's a better bargain than this year's FYF Fest (especially if you bought your tickets at the screamin'-cheap presale rate). If the involvement this year of über-promoter Goldenvoice eliminates or even alleviates the embarrassing logistical problems of the past two years, FYF 2011 could be a landmark day. It's highlighted by Guided by Voices , Explosions in the Sky , Descendents , Broken Social Scene , Death From Above 1979 and Cold War Kids , any one of [...]
It looks like we have another big post-FYF Festival artist show following the festival! The Dead Milkmen will also be playing on Sunday, Sept. 4 at Alex's Bar. Joining The Dead Milkmen will be Audacity and Tijuana Panthers. Tickets for...

I've gone high concept this week, and that is not a reference to this week's cover art which is by my friend Davie Kaufmann. No, I mean there's a gimmick: all the songs on Summer Fridays 4.10 are less than two minutes long. All 33 of them (maybe even 34). With this kind of criteria, we don't really have much in the way of new music (two songs by my count) but quality remains high of course. I've tried to vary it up as much as possible because the bulk of the two-minutes-or-less songs in my collection are of the [...]
First it was New York , and now Philadelphia is stepping up as the potential hub of the East Coast festival scene. Popped! is back, and Riot Fest East has already announced they're setting up shop for a day. As it turns out, that day is part of the Philadelphia Film & Music Festival (a.k.a. Philly F/M Fest), and now the rest of the initial lineup has been revealed. Promising "at least fifteen 'headline-level' artists of all music genres," the immediate standouts are Deadmau5, Opeth, Jukebox the Ghost, Silverstein, The [...]
