i've been listening to black flag frequently for the past few days. just to be clear lest anyone misinterpret what i'm saying the dead science sound NOTHING like black flag. the only parallel i'll draw is that i didn't much care for either on first listen but both eventually sunk into my subconscious like a west [...]

Blending their work in theater, jazz gigs, and the full-on rock experiments they've been known for, Villainaire is leaking out with a new MP3 extolling the joys of a Kirby-inspired world of new gods, "Make Mine Marvel" (listen!). read more

The Dead Science, Villainaire (Constellation, 2008) MP3: "Make Mine Marvel" There's something unsettling at the core of the Dead Science , like maybe vocalist-guitarist Sam Mickens has proof that we're all going to hell, and he's trying to send us the message through a tumult of cryptic lyrics, slithering cellos, harp strums, prickly guitars, and the occasional shout of angry violins. Like Clinic and Tim Kinsella's ever-evolving Joan of Arc, Mickens and Dead Science operate on one level - [...]
The Dead Science "Monster Island Czars" - This is very unusual. The Dead Science are part prog, part modern classical, part no wave/noise rock. The singer not only sounds quite a bit like Craig Wedren from Shudder To Think, but Wedren actually has a guest appearance on the album. (Katrina Ford of Celebration also turns up, and there's certainly some similarities to her band as well.) A majority of the lyrics are either about comic books or the Wu-Tang Clan. (The album is dedicated to the Wu-Tang Clan, and when you open the gatefold of the packaging, [...]

Villainaire may sound like Bruce Wayne's doppleganger, when in fact it is the upcoming third album from Seattlites The Dead Science. Arriving September 9th via Constellation, the album promises soaring melodies of post-punk and avant-pop--whatever that implies. What is known that there are no songs about caped crusaders or rich warlords to be found but we dare not hold that against The Dead Science. The Dead Science - "Throne of Blood (The Jump Off)" The songs on Villainaire range from epic orchestral pop to sinister [...]

Seattle's The Dead Science have established a partnership with Montreal's esteemed Constellation Records to release the band's third full-length: the long-awaited Villianaire . Forging ties to the French Canadians over the course of last year's support with Constellation's other American, Carla Bozulich, The Dead Science are set to celebrate with the release of Constellation's first single in a decade, entitled "Throne of Blood (The Jump Off)"—as well as a Spring tour that finds the band sharing bills with label mates A Silver Mt. The above photo is from when I saw The Dead Science in March. My reaction wasn't outrageous positive, but there was a lot of cool stuff happening and I'd still like to see them again live. Hopefully more than 20 people show up this time. I mean, I'm all about small shows, but that was silly. There was only a gaggle of people, and they weren't really responding. I bet the live show would be better if people actually came out and clapped for them. Sigh. All tour dates below: [...]

I found out about The Dead Science not through an online record review or a magazine, but through luck. While attending the Intonation Music Festival two summers ago, I collected many CD samplers from the assorted record labels that had set up camp in the huge WLUW record fair. One of these labels was Absolutely Kosher Records, home of the Dead Science. A few weeks after the fest, I skimmed through my samplers. Most of it was garbage, but one track really caught my ear. Intrigued, I checked out the EP from whence the song [...]
