To celebrate Record Store Day this April 16, Grimey's in Nashville has announced a sidewalk sale, mini-festival, film screenings and more!

It's been a weird week for me and my buddy Obama because we finally see eye to eye on something. In case you missed the discussion, Obama feels that the American educational system can benefit from an extended school year (click here to read all about it)… when I heard this, I got excited and sent him a text that said, "Good for you!" He didn't quite understand what I was talking about, so he replied with, "Yeah Michelle loved it last night!" I didn't quite understand what he was talking about, so I [...]

Three days into Bloodshot Records takeover of our song Of The Day channel and we've already seen free Mp3s from the brilliant Ha Ha Tonka and legendary Dex Romweber Duo. Today's free Mp3 comes courtesy of The Deadstring Brothers . Built on a the unshakable foundations of blues, rock country and soul, DSB manages to create something at once totally fresh but totally recognizable. It's all ragtops and cold beer, seeds and stems, gatefold LPs and foxy girlfriends with tight, flared jeans. Today's free track is 'Sa Paulo' which is taken from their 2009 album [...]

Big fun in our hometown over the weekend: we went to the annual Art Car parade , which I've attended with my son for who knows how many years. Just the other day the New York Times did a story where they spent 36 hours in our hometown, and needless to say they missed a lot of the good stuff . How can you spend any time in our hometown and not mention the music? Our little town is an American cradle of blues, country, folk, [...]

Here are a few album that I wanted to mention but didn't really have enough to say to warrant an entire post. Deadstring Brothers - Sao Paulo There really isn't anything I can say about this album that 400 other web sites haven't already said, so I won't. I will say that this is the first Deadstring Brothers album I've ever liked, and I love the sonofabitch. It had me from the opening notes of its lead-off (and title) track to the very end, with very few [...]
![Deadstring Brothers – Sao Paulo [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2446478_lg.jpg)
Kurt Marschke and crew continue their homage to early 70's Stones with another 10-song set of honky-tonk blues. And while they may not be reinventing the wheel, they do it with near perfection. every time I have seen them live - they have simply crushed it. The band has undergone a slight change in the lineup. Gone is rocket-fueled vocals of Masha Marjieh, so Marschke handles all the lead vocals with the female vocals coming in the background on Sao Paulo . While Masha may be gone, English slide and steel guitarist Spencer Cullom is still on [...]

The Deadstring Brothers are an alt-country/rock band from Detroit, Michigan and London, England who play in a style somewhat reminiscent of the Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street. Not unlike Exile-era Stones, Deadstring Brothers deliver a menacing sound that draws equally on the melancholy of country ballads and the abandon of rock and blues. The bands music is deeply rooted in the storytelling and instrumental traditions of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and the American Outlaw Movement, but is also informed by the song structure and understated aggression commonly associated with Detroit bands. Their haunting melodies [...]

After what was hopefully a temporary lull in quality output with 2007's Silver Mountain, Detroit's favorite Stones-loving, blues-rock fueled band The Deadstring Brothers have returned with a new record entitled Sao Paulo , due February 23th on Bloodshot Records. We here at Stark have a deep love affair with their 2006 effort Starving Winter Report . Yet, for some reason Silver Mountain's heavier musical approach and lead vocals from former back-up singer Masha Marjieh didn't do it for us. From initial listens to Sao Paulo , it [...]

I'm enjoying the self-titled debut of Amber Farris' band, "Somebody's Darling." It's kind of like Lucero or Old '97s fronted by a woman with a powerful set of lungs. Rock and roll/country, straight-ahead four-person rock and roll on Shiner Records / PaloDuro Records. In fact, it's hard to write much about them, because the music is so up front and pure. It makes you want to grab a brew, sit at a bar, and stare at the chicks who will definitely dig the band. That's the best thing about alt-country sung by a [...]

Roman Candle were unfortunate victims of V2 Records' untimely floundering several years ago. They retired to their native Tennessee to lick their wounds and reassess the situation. In 2009, they have returned to the forefront with support from AAA radio, Paste Magazine, a tour and a great new record Oh Tall Tree In The Ear . An obscure reference, but they remind us a good deal of the Deadstring Brothers, a fantastic Detroit band with a Rolling Stones fetish and a kick ass live show. Roman Candle don't count on the Stones as much, [...]

The other day I had to make a long drive for work, so I loaded up the iPod with a bunch of the new releases. I worked my way through the excellent, but short Cease To Begin, then proceeded to some new Radiohead tunes which left me shivering and cold. I like Radiohead and I think In Rainbows is excellent, but sometimes listening to a Radiohead album for the first time leaves you exhausted. What I needed was a nice, warm rock n' roll blanket. Enter Deadstring Brothers' second release, Silver Mountain , [...]

Deadstring Brothers - "Meet Me Down At Heavy Load" You know those people who say, "They don't make good music anymore"? I don't hate those people. … They do motivate me though. In fact that's part of the impetus for this site—to prove that there's so much good music being made that you can discover something new every day (ahhh … warm hugs for everyone). With that said, Silver Mountain , the new album by Detroit [...]

Deadstring Brothers are just cranking up their tour in support of their new Bloodshot Records release Silver Mountain . With three new members brought over from England, playing pedal steel guitar, the wurlizter and bass, the band is really sounding amazing. The new album was inspired by their time spent in England exploring the southern rock/blues scene. We were nervous when they stopped by to record a MOKB SIRIUS Blog Radio / 91.7 WEEM [...]
Beirut performed songs from their new album live on KEXP last week photo by Mark Ward Let's hope you still got some funny money in your walllet 'cause it's time to get your freak on: this is one wonderfully weird week of new releases. Even the most anticipated releases by Band of Horses and Beirut, both fantastic sophomore efforts, are not your typical fare of indie rock, with BoH soaring new heights of vocal range and Beirut going more "old country" than "old school." Of course there's the good [...]

The Deadstring Brothers are the best alt-country band you've never heard of. They did everything Whiskeytown should have done after Stranger's Almanac but never managed to. And it's my distinct pleasure, if you've not heard them before, to introduce them to you. Their eponymous debut hit in 2002, and featured fantastic songs like, "I'm a Stealer," " Entitled ," "Unbroken" (.mov video) and, " 27 Hours ," along with their cover of Johnny Cash's, "Long Black Veil." It takes balls to cover Cash, especially on your first record. Next came [...]

I had a movie weekend -- being inside to escape the heat of the day and the monsoon thunderstorms of the evenings. First up, despite the film being about music, I found Dreamgirls to be schmaltzy, poorly constructed, and pretty much unbearable. My friends who recommended it to me owe me a ticket to a show containing at least 97% fewer full-length, improbably placed songs in the middle of normal scenes. I also saw Bourne Ultimatum as a date with my Dad for his 60th birthday this weekend [...]
