Time Out Happy New Year, everyone; hope 2013 has been good to you so far and if not, geez. It's only been 36 hours or so. What the hell. We'll kick off the new year with some old faces under a new name; The New Mendicants. So new they don't even have a website or Facebook page, but if you need some background maybe look up Pernice Brothers , Teenage Fanclub , and The Sadies , and cross-reference with my writeup of last June's wonderful Joe Pernice/Norman Blake show [...]
Colin Medley This here is another of those posts that, were it a category on Jeopardy , would be called "Potpourri" on account of it being a whole lot of this and that with only the passports of the artists mentioned in common. And I'll start with Toronto's METZ because, well, I haven't used one of their photos yet and my posting process is really that random. The trio has been making a lot of noise - literally and figuratively - on the back of their self-titled debut , and while it [...]
Frank Yang It's probably a reach to think that Sloan had some sort of master plan for the past couple years that would pull their career from the respectable but not overly remarkable holding pattern that it'd been in for the past few albums and make them both exciting and relevant again, but that's pretty much what they've managed to do. Their twentieth anniversary as a band last year was kept from being a one-way trip down memory lane thanks to The Double Cross , arguably their best album this century [...]
After a wee bit of a break from posting cover versions, I have decided to revive my weekly We've Got It Covered posts. Seeing as it's been a while since I posted anything I have decided to go with not one, but two covers from Admiral Fallow . The five piece are currently winging their way around the good old US of A at the moment, then they will culminate a pretty amazing year for the band with a headline show at the Glasgow Barrowlands on Saturday the 8th of December. [...]
Keaton Henson 's music is beyond meaningful. His absolute desolate approach to everything he makes is original and interesting. The minimalistic vibes and touches on his debut album Dear... were astronomically detached and depressing. Tracks like " You Don't Know How Lucky You Are " and " Small Hands " were perennial at nature. The sound is just plucky guitar and falsetto lyrics, and you can't refrain from thinking, "That doesn't sound like it could mean that much." But you'd be wrong. Even with this track or [...]
A few months ago Desiree wrote about the amazing artist Keaton Henson , describing his music as "a work of deep feeling and not to be taken lightly". I second that sentiment, especially when a video is produced for his tracks. Desiree embedded the video for "Small Hands" and if you haven't seen the video for "You Don't Know How Lucky You Are" then it's a must as well since both are truly heart breaking and will the cause the viewer to be an emotional wreck. Just as I've started to recover from Henson's [...]
The Dears have always been an operatic band. You can picture their songs at integral moments in cinema, or when picturing the soundtrack to your life, which according to Krief is a deliberate process (he has previously worked scoring films). Patrick Krief's full length solo album is no different. It pulls on the heartstrings like no other; it swallows you whole as you get lost in the beauty and heartache he emotes so perfectly. There are moments where it feels like the guitar solos are singing the song, "gently weeping" as the Beatles so eloquently put it. [...]
Keaton Henson - Dear... By Russell Warfield Part of me thinks I should go really, really easy on Keaton Henson 's debut album Dear... . Recorded alone in his bedroom and never performed live owing to Henson’s crippling anxiety, I'm reticent to turn the screws on a release which presumably marks a huge leap of courage for him, being brave enough to submit these songs for public approval. But combining the brink-of-tears vocal work of people like Damien Rice and Perfume Genius with the rustic fingerpicking [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive The Dears Facebook As 2012 draws to a close and a brand new year looms, many people are making resolutions and thinking about fresh starts. M for Montreal: How La Belle Ville Survived 'Next Seattle' Status to Maintain its Music Scene's Fire
