Things I Like About The Death Set: 1. The refer to themselves as "The Mutherfucking Death Set." 2. They are from Baltimore. 3. Their DIY style of punk and electronica is all about spastic fun. 4. They represent Baltimore well. At some high-brow SXSW showcase they played, they horrified all the "music elite" on hand by trashing the stage and throwing their amplifiers in the pool. 5. Their debut album Worldwide has 18 tracks and is 26 minutes long. Check out a few tracks below, [...]

Last year The Death Set took all of 17-minutes to capture my ears for a good portion of the year. Their debut EP, Rad Warehouses Bad Neighborhoods played constantly on my headphones and as it drove me through my commutes and days I fell head-over-heels for The Death Set's brand of instant, in your face, dance-able, punk music. It was brilliant, it was quick, it was made for the ADD generation!

I posted about Baltimore's The Death Set a few months ago. I was diggin them then and I am definitely diggin them now, especially after hearing their debut album, Worldwide . It's a post-punk pinball blitz with battle-cries, electro-beats and casio sing-alongs that gets me that much more psyched about the Baltimore scene. Then again, don't just take my word for it, listen to/watch the band speak and shout about it! Youtube Link [...]

By way of Brisbane, Sydney, NYC and B'more, they're traveling hobos of the best kind. No cask wine, just They've been blogged into oblivion, and rightfully so. The Death Set's sound graduated first class from the Dan Deacon school of kicking ass and taking names - the excess was collected and crushed under a distortion pedal then locked up in an abandoned mental asylum overnight. They've filtered the shivering remains through overproof vodka, collected the vapors and smoked it with a crack pipe. Then they blew the smoke onto it all on a shiny CD, and you can buy [...]

THE DEATH SET (Backspace, 115 NW 5th) Above all else, the Death Set are fun. Sounding like some jacked-up blend of 90 different styles, they manage to combine together Dan Deacons happy hardcore mind-fuck, the Go! Teams cheerleader squad dance party, the lo-fi broken machinery electro of the Tigerbeat6 label, and the hipster punk that was late 90s Southern California spazz-coreall while doing so with an insane amount of youthful exuberance. Their live show tends to lose a lot of the electronic flourishes and falls more on the punk and hardcore side of things, but dont let that [...]

I'm not an avid reader of Rolling Stone, but when they have their little lists they like to put together I usually take a gander so I can be one of those people that argues with a speechless magazine. This months edition chronicles 2008's best so far. My Morning Jacket, Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, etc. Low and behold guess who the Best Scene belongs to....BALTIMORE . Yes, apparently thanks to the success of Dan Deacon and Wham City combined with the growing number of indie acts, good ole Charm City has gained some props from [...]

For all you fans of THE DEATH SET out there, our good friend DEMONBABIES (who directed the Matt & Kim / Flosstradamus remix video) is directing a new music video for the single 'Around The World' from their brand new full length album 'Worldwide' out now on Ninja Tune / Counter Records. The shoot is this coming Sunday the 27th, Downtown LA. They will be looking for approximately 20 or so extras for the shoot. Not going to Coachella? Looking for something fun to do while being involved in a crazy music [...]

Like so many so-called holidays, Record Store Day is just an attempt to get people to buy more stuff. But in this case, it's a cause I can get behind. During my time at college, it's probably not that far off to say that I spent more time at Back Street Records than I did attending classes. I could spend hours flipping through records, talking with clerks about music, generally hanging out. And during the late-'90s I probably logged about 5-6 hours a week at Other Music, as it was conveniently located a few blocks from my job. [...]

Baltimore electropunk duo, The Death Set , are ready to drop their debut record, Worldwide , on April 22nd via Ninjatune . Of the eighteen tracks on the record, not a single one tops 2:24, with the whole thing clocking in at about twenty-five minutes. Worldwide blends lo-fi electronica with frenzied punk and hardcore. Abrasive rhythms, group chants, catchy vocal melodies, overdriven keyboards, and frantic guitars are packed into short, energetic, and addicting songs perfect for the ADHD in all of us. The Death Set kick off the first [...]

25 Minutes. 18 Tracks. Worldwide . The album drops on April 22nd here in the US on Ninjatune (new favorite label? possibly). The Death Set define electropunk. Nothing else comes close. Worldwide will make you tap then bob then jump then sing then dance then yell then play the album all over again. Take the energy of punk, the coolness of lo-fi electronica, and the fun of...um...fun, shake it up in a tiny club atmosphere, and you've got Baltimore's The Death Set. I could [...]

Check my show review at BYT . Jeff the Taper was in the house as well and was kind enough to provide us with the entire live recording, exclusively. Check after the jump for the tracks. Wednesday night I went down to Pianos to catch Port O'Brien and see what all the buzz was all about. On stage the band resembles a jam band, with two guuitars, banjo, piano, bass, and drums all going as well as the fact that all the members sing-a-long with each song. Its loud and its vibrant and its nothing like the band's new record. All We Could Do Was Sing is much calmer and more emotional on

If you have a ton of energy and are looking to vent it somewhere, might I suggest the Lo-Fi Social Club in Baltimore. There you'll find the high octane performances of Matt & Kim, The Death Set, The Pharmacy, Naked on the Vague, and Soiled Mattress & The Springs. If you look for a much calmer, yet still entertaining evening perhaps mosey your way down to the Black Cat in DC to see Xiu Xiu, Thao With The Get Down Stay Down, and Chris Garneau. mp3: Thao With The Get Down [...]

After a few months spent plotting a killer day party with my good friends from Sonic Itch Music and Cubik Musik , we're excited to invite you to Above The Radar. It's taking place on March 13th at Trophy's on South Congress, with two stages and 12 different acts from all over the map. Whether you have a taste for guitar-swinging rock & roll or something a bit more dance friendly, you'll find it here. We have a few people to thank in assisting with the production of [...]
