"Cuyahoga" "Don’t Call it All" "Rise to Me" [...]

In addition to playing drums (and other things) for The Decemberists, John Moen has also logged time with Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Elliott Smith, and Robert Pollard's Boston Spaceships. Revise Your Maps is the title of John's second solo album under the Perhapst moniker, his first in five years . Out June 25 on Jealous Butcher Records , the record's got a dusty, Laurel Canyon vibe and isn't miles away from the groups he's played with. Hear for yourself, we've got the premiere of the ebullient cut "Ramble Scramble" in this [...]

Before there was indie music, there was underground music, which was essentially the same thing as what we now call indie, except, as the name implies, no one knew about it. In the '70s and '80s, there were reasons for why music was relegated to pop-up venues and warehouses and basements. Music of the underground could be abrasive or it could be druggy, but regardless of the particulars, it didn’t mix with the mainstream because it deliberately did not appeal to the traditional societal standards.

Spring has sprung, and I for one am ecstatic. I'm ready to shed my coat in favor of tank tops, and don strappy sandals instead of boots. But for some, spring's arrival isn't as welcome. It signals our slow-but-steady entry into 100+ degree temperatureland, and even the promise of sno-cones and watering holes can't subside that fear. Alas, there are some songs that just put me in a happy mood, giving me that extra spring in my step, in more ways than one. (Forgive me, they can't all be winners). I've got an upbeat playlist that's sure to help you [...]

It's shaping up to be another stellar year for album-length coverage, with pickings so strong we're hard pressed to take them all on in a single feature without burying the lead. Indeed, in the few short months since the year turned, we've already featured close exploration of Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer's Child Ballads EP, touted Levi Weaver's free-to-fans covers EP as a "darling indie set" well worth your time, and helped Slowcoustic's double-length tribute to J. Tillman's Long May You Run take flight. But the hits just keep on coming, and we're [...]

It seemed wrong to do anything outsi de a tribute to the late Jason Molina. Since learning of his passing the other weekend, Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. have been dominating my playlists; in particular the former. Given this fact, I focused on the sub-genres Molina often found himself in - folk, folk-rock, and alt-country. Artists like Bill Callahan, Norfolk & Western, Brown Bird and Hayden all made the cut. Check out the play list below. "Simpletons" by The Bats off Free All the Monsters [...]

Despite the name of their album, the sound of Matthew Morgan & the Lost Brigade is anything but Found. However, what the disc lacks in continuity and consistency, it makes up for in creative and engaging melodies. The album moves across a spectrum of folk rock from the driving opening tracks of “Dustbowl” and “Black Water” to the spacey-ness of “Whose Gods Are These” and finishing with the true folk tune of “Quite Contrary.” This Chicago-based, up-and-coming band seems to have the potential to break it great, but does not quite accomplish [...]

Ah, February. The short month full of Hallmark cards, increased chocolate intake, and enough flowers and candy to make every single person gag. Yep, we definitely get doused in consumerism as February 14th approaches, but that doesn't mean that cupid's favorite month needs to be nothing but sap. We've all been to enough weddings to know that there are songs that make you warm and fuzzy, and songs that give you the cold sweats. And I'm here to offer up my takes on some of the best tracks that leave you jonesing for a make-out session. And believe [...]
Filed under: Video , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Jason Quigley Black Prairie is less a side project and more an exercise in compartmentalization. Multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk got antsy in between tours with the Decemberists and figured it was high time he took up the dobro. (For the uninitiated, the dobro looks a like an acoustic guitar with a steel belly, and [...]

A few weeks ago, some believed that the Mayan Long Count Calendar would represent an end to the human race, with large beastly demigods destroying the planet Earth and its inhabitants. Thankfully, not true. However, what if the end was nigh? Would you have been pleased that the songs of 2012 made you dance with joy before being eaten by Quetzalcoatl? Would you kick rocks and wait impatiently for doom knowing that you would never-ever have to listen to Mumford and Sons one more time? Or would you moon over the albums that you would miss in 2013 as the [...]
