North Carolina is rich in history and broad in geography, stretching from warm beachfront majesty to the base of Appalachia. That it holds a dominant place in the history of folk music is due in part to its cultural diversity, and in part to its situation midway up the coast, along the route that folk strands might have once traveled from North to South and back again. This combination of factors has made it an influential locus and crossroads for several southern folk movements of the last century, including branches of the blues, appalachian music, strains of bluegrass, and other [...]

Did I have to listen to a Nicholas Spark's move soundtrack to find the new Deep Dark Woods song? Yes, dammit, I did - and I enjoyed it. Is the rest of the soundtrack terrible awful pop music? Nope, they're actually in good company among Ben Howard, Gareth Dunlop, and The White Buffalo. The word on the street is that the boys actually make a cameo in the movie playing their own song. I'm going to take a shot here and say it's at the happy wedding reception at the where the twilight sun bouncing off the lake [...]

I forget it all too often but dammit if The Deep Dark Woods might not consistently be my most favorite band. It's like those fellas have veins full of whiskey and perfection and their beards are stocked full of musical charisma and exceptional lyricism. With this latest offering, a jam written and recorded for the movie Safe Haven, one which we will not see because Jesus, Nicholas Sparks, how many millions is one man entitled to make on the same damn story over and over?! I mean, are women really going to pay to see The Notebook, Volume [...]

Brace yourself - we're going down... From tenacious ten past sensational six and all the way down to the incredible number one, The G-Man's Top 50 albums of the year for 2012 is now complete. Again these are my own personal favourite releases from the past twelve months so no harm intended if your own choices happen to be omitted from the list. For a recap on #50 through #11 see here . Note reason for itty bitty videos is to improve page loading times. [...]

Absent for a month and indeed, sorry for that. But here we are now: the fall has descended upon the Ozarks and year 30 has dropped into my lap. Let me admit some things. I will admit that I have not written since early October. I will admit that I have not listened to music - not a mixtape in my car, not a snuck secular jam in my office, not a handcrafted playlist in my home - in more than a month. I will admit that it's likely due to a combination of the weather [...]

Austin City Limits, taking place this upcoming weekend, is one of the premiere music festivals in the USA. It features plenty of big headliners, like Neil Young, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Black Keys, and The Roots. But what about the other acts? Austin City Limits is reputed for consistently showcasing quality under-exposed artists that surprise festival-goers every year. Here are a few that are definitely worth checking out, with full audio clips of select tracks just below their names: The Eastern Sea The Eastern Sea should receive a rousing [...]
De festivalsfeer van eind jaren zestig, begin jaren zeventig herleeft vrijdagavond op Into The Great Wide Open. Het Canadese The Deep Dark Woods klinkt namelijk als een kruising tussen The Band en Grateful Dead. De band komt uit Saskatoon en...

Newport Folk Festival @ Fort Adams State Park - July 27-29 Words : Jeffrey Greenblatt Photos : Gerry Hardy In my review of the 2010 Newport Folk Festival , I deemed the granddaddy of all music fests the "music fan's, music fest," and upon my return visit this year that statement has never rang more true. Despite persistent gloomy, overcast skies and periods of rain (which included a monster storm early Saturday evening during My Morning Jacket's headlining set), people were still smiling throughout and were genuinely excited to see [...]

This weekend the granddaddy of all music fests – the Newport Folk Festival – will get under way with three days of roots, folk, funk, soul and rock or what can basically be defined as quintessential American music. For the 2012 installment the fest has grown in size with the addition of a fourth stage, and will "unofficially" open on Friday night at the historic Fort Adams State Park with a fantastic triple-bill that features Wilco, Blitzen Trapper and Megafaun. The fest, which will once again be streamed live on NPR featuring both audio and video, [...]
