Alela Diane is the Joni Mitchell of our generation; "To Be Still" is one of the best albums of 2009. M. Ward's "Hold Time" has received mixed reviews, but it definitely has some winners ( Jailbird, Shangri-La, One Hundred Million Years, Outro, Hold Time, Rave On, For Beginners, Never Had Nobody Like You ). N.A.S.A. (Squeak E. Clean ad DJ Zegon) is the most exiting of the new releases with contributions from: David Bryne, Chali 2Na, Tom Waits, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, RZA, KRS-One, George Clinton and others. [...]
Last night the Chinese Garden down in the Pearl District was open to the public for free on account of the Chinese New Year celebrations. It was dark, wet and packed. The main event was the floating blossom looking LED lit things floating on the water but mostly I was interested in the giant porous rocks hauled over from Lake Tai that they fashioned into grottoes and presented as sculptures. I was born in the year of the Ox and this is the year of the Ox and so maybe that means [...]

My respect for Saskatoon's Deep Dark Woods began when I picked "Hang Me Oh Hang Me" as the 38th best album of 2007 . I loved the bands smart mix of traditional bluegrass and Americana, which made it sound classic and traditional all at the same time. Lead singer Ryan Boldt sounds as old as Jerry Garcia, but his voice much stronger. He gives the band it's gravitas, while lead guitarist Burke Barlow gives it its soul. The sad and slow "Farewell" is almost a lullaby, and it would [...]
So my last two post have been Stripmall Ballads and The Sumner Brothers and to finish off this Canadian trilogy I present to you The Deep Dark Woods . Since they sent me their new album Winter Hours last week I can honestly say I must have heard it at least fifty times in that period and I can't see myself stopping any time soon as it is an album that, for me at least, takes a few listens to really appreciate the craftsmanship at work. Stunning, spine tingling harmonmies, beautiful arrangements and [...]

We are back in full swing here on the Great Canadian Mixtape Project and honestly, hats off to you Saskatchewan. Not only did you come through with a ton of quality tracks, you really personified the reasons we started this thing. When we stumbled on an act we wanted to include, it was followed up with three or four suggestions of other bands that deserved to be heard. Saskatchewan really has a terrific collection of artists, and runs the gambit when it comes to style. The pop stylings of Maybe Smith (who offered up [...]

Is it just me, or is 2009 already the best year for music ever? We've got some serious gems headed our way very soon and February 17th is poised to be this year's Indie Music Super Tuesday. Both M. Ward and The Deep Dark Woods are releasing albums and the fine folks at Black Hen Music were kind enough to give us a sneak peak at DDW's latest effort, Winter Hours . It is phenomenal. It makes me want to cuss. Oz and I have had access to it for a couple weeks [...]

by ryan s. I'm feeling worldly this Sunday morning after taking in some Brazilian rock last night with a host of eclectic and attractive people. To keep the beat moving, here are some notable tracks that passed through the QC inbox last week. Starting us off is a remix by Anglo-Brazilian chanteuse Cibelle . Enjoy more music we didn't post on (until now) volume 10. [...]
I keep reading all these great reviews , but I don't get it. I gave it a shot and it must be above my intellect. Some are claiming that it's the best album so far this year and may end up being the best of the year. I'll stick to my advance copies of the upcoming releases from The Deep Dark Woods and Justin Townes Earle for now. Those are gems. You know those posters that you stare at and eventually 3D shapes start forming? I can't [...]
So yes, this is supposed to happen on Tuesday, ideally. But the world is not always an ideal place and sometimes you wake up at 5 *PM* when you meant to wake up at 5 *AM*, and then before you know it you're not sure what day it is and you've had six cups of coffee and you've been wearing your favorite polar bear pajamas for three days and things get ugly. But now, here we are with another collection of mp3s which are very listenable indeed, and that feels great. I guess sometimes the [...]
Winter Hours, The Deep Dark Woods' [Myspace] sophomore release on Black Hen Music, is an album full of raw emotion, sadness, beautiful vocals and harmonies, new sounds, and well thought out...

myspace To be honest, this review could be as simple as rewriting my initial reaction when I heard the first song from The Deep Dark Woods new record. As soon as the harmonies on All the Money I Had Is Gone started, I stopped what I was doing and wrote to my friend that passed along the track, "Wow. I always liked The Deep Dark Woods, but this song is incredible." The band creates a nostalgic feel over the four-minutes, but the song focuses on the struggles of a band instead of [...]
Song obsessions are those songs that we listen to on repeat. I noticed that my obsessions are often a week long. I also thought that other people might have similar obsessions. I've collected a panel of a few like-minded individuals and gotten their "song obsessions of the week." Quite often it's easy to explain why the song is good; it's much hard to explain why we're obsessed. Maybe you'll become obsessed with one of these. This week I asked contributors for either their song obsession of the week or their top song obsession of the year [...]

It's been a strange few days over here at DCHQ . On Monday a certain NY radio station sent what can only be described as a compliment-strewn e-beg asking us to join their airwaves, affording us carte blanche on show content & tomfoolery. Yesterday we received word that this month our TWR podcasts are #1 on the Podbean site for the Radio category (with almost 14,000 listeners tuning in since New Year's day). Then we discover we have the 4th most listened to Radio podcast on the entire Podbean site, ever . This morning I received an email from a promoter asking [...]

How's that hangover feeling today? Don't worry - I've got the perfect song to accompany your hair of the dog. I can't think of a better track to start off 2009. I mentioned yesterday that Canada's The Deep Dark Woods are releasing a new album entitled Winter Hours . It's being released via Black Hen Records on February 17th and they recently released the first single. "All The Money I Had Is Gone" gave me chills after hearing the first line of vocals and its rolling rhythm. These guys are criminally underrated and [...]

The artwork above was found at Colorcubic , an ultra-hip design firm that handles multimedia, print, branding, etc. This poster will be made available in their online store. We may say good riddance to 2008 as a nation, but as we posted our top 50 albums of 2008 , it was easy to reflect on an amazing year in music. I have a feeling 2009 will be even better. Here are the albums we're looking forward to in the new year. 1. The Deep Dark Woods - Winter Hours (January [...]

As Oz and I tirelessly compile our list of 2008's top 50 albums, we continue to bring up 2007 releases that were inexplicably left off last year's list. Let's chalk it up to rookie blogging or heads up asses. The good news is that most of the acts listed below have releases coming out in '09. Our best EP's of '08 will be out tomorrow and watch out for the top 50 albums of '08 next week. 1. The Everybodyfields - Nothing Is Okay I am so pissed that [...]
