At least for us east coasters, it's rainy and cold outside, and with the holidays still a few weeks away, these last few days have tended to really drag on. While our Friday Mixtape is always worthwhile, for the aforementioned reasons, this week's is particularly awesome. After all, what better way to kick off your weekend then a collection of the week's best new singles and remixes along with mp3s from a few up-and-comers you should definitely check out? Yeah, nothing much. NEW Singles: "Submarines of Stockholm" by [...]
The Deep Vibration free tracks While The Deep Vibration was in the studio with producer Niko Bolas (Neil Young, My Morning Jacket), they recorded way more tracks than what ended up on their debut EP, Veracruz. Some songs were to be kept for their upcoming LP. Some didn't fit the intended mood of the EP. But the always prolific band didn't let that stop them from pushing their own boundaries and experimenting with unique and different sounds of "alt country". Bringing a harder edge to their previous work [...]

Nashville's latest Neil Young devotees are The Deep Vibration whose new EP, Veracruz - out on Dualtone Records - was produced by the band along with Niko Bolas . Bolas has worked as a producer, mixer & engineer for the likes of Neil himself (along with others like Rachael Yamagata, Kiss, The Waterboys, Melissa Etheridge, Keith Richards & Hindu Love Gods). The Vibration play it straight, two guitars bass & drums - and sure there's some nods [...]
THE DEEP VIBRATION got their name from a random encounter with Lou Reed that left the Velvet man telling them to drop the name "The Attack!" and dubbing them with their current moniker. As with many recording sessions, when the band was in the studio with Niko Bolas ( Neil Young , My Morning Jacket ) recording their debut EP Veracruz songs were recorded that didn't get released on the album. Rather than let these great songs sit on a shelf, the band decided to put them out into the blogosphere and [...]

The Whispertown 2000 I received the December issue of Paste today. I really do love this magazine. Great format, photos, reviews and the free monthly CD sampler. She & Him's M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel grace the cover for winning Paste's album of year award . I don't agree with the pick, but they explain their decision in the issue. Look for features on Damon Albarn, Steven Soderbergh and a review of Ryan Adam's 'Cardinology'. Los Angeles' The Whispertown 2000 record 'Swim' is creeping [...]
Not much to say about this week's edition of our Friday Mixtape. Just your standard mix of the week's best new singles, covers, and remixes along with a few mp3s from some up-and-comers you just might want to check out. Our "standard" is just a little different than most other's "standard." After all, where else will you find 33 free and legal mp3s at your disposable? NEW Singles: "Another World" by Antony and the Johnsons "Move You" by Anya Marina [...]

With just one EP under their belts The Deep Vibration already has an impressive pedigree. Veracruz was produced by former Neil Young producer Niko Bolas. Alt. country diva Gillian Welch appears on the record. The band even received its moniker from Lou Reed. Not a bad start. But what is the EP itself actually like? Pretty good actually. Veracruz consists of 5 tracks of roots rock, deeply inspired by American themes. Before hearing a note, the song titles alone betray the Americana contained [...]
While I don't know if we'd go as far to call this week's edition of the Friday Mixtape epic - after all, there is always room for improvement - it sure is quite large. 41, count 'em, 41 songs can be found below, a mix of music's best new singles and remixes along with some selections with bands you might want to check out. And since it's CMJ week, we figured no better time than now to throw in a few extra ones featuring some of the marathon's performers. The CMJ CROWD: [...]

The Deep Vibration has a fantastic pedigree. The Americana roots rockers have made connections that most bands would envy. The group's debut EP, Veracruz , has just been released. The EP was produced by former Neil Young producer Niko Bolas and features alt. country icon Gillian Welch on vocals for the track "Tennessee Rose". If those weren't impressive enough, the band's very name came from a suggestion by the godfather of all things cool: Lou Reed! I'm [...]

The Deep Vibration - Veracruz Over the past few years, the term roots music has kind of become a dirty word. Too often it's been associated with former generic jam bands who suddenly decide to abandon their boring extended instrumental breaks and adopt four minute blues progressions. But when it's done right, it's a perfect description of artists that make a heartfelt exploration of the foundations of American music. I wasn't the slightest bit familiar with [...]
