While it has been widely ignored, the post Britpop / pre "The Libertines/The _____/garagey" band era was kind of a dark period in UK music. UK had just witness one of the greatest talent and musical explosions of all time in the early 90s but by the late 90s, those bands had all either broken up, started to suck or completely change their sound. During this time, bands found it hard to garner success, specially with the charts being dominated by the Spice Girls/Westlife/whatever. To put it into perspective, Stereophonics was considered one of the biggest acts from the UK [...]

STV have come in for some massively unfair stick in the past, but they have come back fighting this week with one of the funniest pieces I've seen in ages. This week they published a list of nominations for the best Scottish songs of the noughties, to be voted for by viewers, with the intention of eventually whittling the numbers down to select 'Scotland's Greatest Ever Album'. And it is hilarious . The list of nominated songs for the last ten years or so is absolutely brilliant. I can't tell if it's the best satire [...]
![[Introducing] – Will Hanson](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3585047_lg.jpg)
Tweet A top tip for anyone who wants me to pay attention to their music: name-drop Chemikal Underground . I mean, don't just lie and claim your signed to them, or anything; but if there is a connection, it's definitely worth flagging up. Will Hanson did. And lo, I find myself writing about him. Following the break-up of his previous band, Proxy, Paris-born Will left London for Glasgow, via New York - as you do. Why anyone would pick Glasgow over Edinburgh [...]
In early 2010 several of Scotland's most talented indie-rock and folk musicians came together to collaborate on a project called The Fruit Tree Foundation, and the resulting First Edition will finally be available for purchase on June 28th. The idea for the album arose from the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival with the intention of raising awareness of mental health and challenge perceptions of mental health problems. The musicians involved are members of such bands as Frightened Rabbit, Twilight Sad, Idlewild, Sparrow and the Workshop, the Delgados, as well as a host of others. [...]
![[Introducing] – Amycanbe](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3539486_lg.jpg)
Tweet Until recently I could count the number of modern Italian bands I knew on one finger - that would be Lacuna Coil, which is to say I didn't need any fingers whatsoever to tally up the number of Italian bands I liked. So I wasn't sure what to expect when Amycanbe arrived in the inbox. I was impressed. Started in 2002, their debut album "Being A Grown-Up Sure Is Complicated" got a UK release back in 2007, accompanied by touring and [...]
Tweet As part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts and Film Festival in 2010, a gaggle of notable Scottish musicians all got together to write and record a compilation album themed around mental health issues. Among those involved were members from Frightened Rabbit , The Twilight Sad , Idlewild, The Delgados, and more, and whilst you've been able to get your hands on the records via various online unscrupulous methods, it was previously only available [...]

This podcast is, as you will already know, very, very late. Personally I blame a combination of the RNLI, gin, and the fact that Mrs. Toad is away all week, which meant that yesterday wasn't really available for blog things. It's also not very new music-orientated either, so hopefully those of you who come here pretty much just for that won't be too disappointed. I think what happened was that I got so into a handful of new releases recently that I neglected all the others, so when I came to sit down and write about [...]

Er sorry everyone, I wrote out my post for Friday, got totally carried away with myself, and forgot to add a Friday Five, so here it is. The post I wrote was all about Channel 42s recent Sounds From the Cities: Edinburgh show, so I reckon the five songs should maybe be ones I would personally have chosen to illustrate the musical history of the city (and Scotland in general) had I been the one making the choices (and yes, I promise, no Song, by Toad Records bands). In terms of [...]
I have heard several people complain about this phenomenon of "lo-fi" artists. Why hide songwriting under layers of incoherence, they usually ask, if the songwriting is allegedly good? Being one of the more popular lo-fi examples, Ariel Pink is one of the first examples they use. I then usually ask if them if they have [...]

I am not cold in the sense that the temperature is all that low, more in the sense that I have been just a little too chilly for a few hours now and it is really starting to get me down. Moan moan. Song, by Eeyore etc etc. Anyhow, Cellar 35 in Aberdeen was excellent last night - what a top wee space. It is basically just a scruffy basement, but they've got a couple of carpets down and sofas and the atmosphere is really, really nice. It helps a great deal that the staff were [...]

In tribute to John Peel the 5pm post today, this one, has been written at the wrong speed. In other words, I didn't finish it quick enough to post it at the right time. The Delgados would be my other favourite band ever if pushed. Them and Arab Strap would need to have some kind of Deathmatch to provide a clear winner, and that seems unlikely to happen. The Delgados were, of course, Emma Pollock, Paul Savage, Alun Woodward and Stewart Henderson. Not only did The Delgados release five briliant studio albums, but they also formed [...]

Happy bank holiday! The sun is out where i live in what must be a last-ditch push by the British summer to remind everyone it actually happened at all. So here's a suitably sunny song of the day, The Delgados ' epic take on ELO 's "Mr. Blue Sky", recorded in session for John Peel in 2002. Here are the reasons this version is better than the original: 1. Emma Pollock sings it, not Jeff Lynne . 2. The Delgados version doesn make use of stupid Muppet Show backing vocals everywhere. [...]

The Burns Unit are one of the more original and interestingly-constructed collaborations. The disparate group of 8 Scottish and Canadian musicians (folk singer Karine Polwark , Fence Collective mainstay King Creosote , Emma Pollock formerly of The Delgados , Indo-Caledonian Future Pilot AKA , multi-instrumentalist Kim Edgar , Canadians drummer/producer Mattie Foulds and pianist Michael Johnson , and rapper MC Soom T ) originally came together courtesy of the Burnsong songwriters' retreat in Scotland in 2006, not having previously known each other or worked together. Sparks [...]

Instant Mobile Photography by Me ! Hey kiddos! Man o' man, if there's one thing I hate about vacation is, not just the end of vacation, but the beginning of working again! But, whilest I was, first busy with not being busy, then knee-deep in meetings and catching up and emails and etc, Peanut , Ari , Neil , and even our newest writer Wasoe stepped up to the metaphorical blog plate [...]
