It just occurred to me that I've been blogging covers for more than three years, so to celebrate I've decided to do what I rarely do and revisit some gems from the past. Below are tracks I posted in 2004 that are either reader or personal faves (and, in a few cases, just weird/bad tracks that amuse me). I know a lot of readers didn't know about me back then. I believe I timed these so that they could be burned to audio disc for posterity, should you be so inclined. Enjoy! Collections from [...]

Today I've been listening to The Delgados' album The Great Eastern for the first time in what seems like years. I'd forgotten just how good it is. An indie classic that really should have been massive. Then my mind turned to what the band were up to now. I've no idea what the three blokes are up to (I saw some of them in Malcolm Middleton's band a couple of years ago), but Emma Pollock is very much back on the scene. I've been intending to post on Emma for a while now, but [...]
The second night of the Versacoustic gigs took place on Wednesday. Versa is some sort of new beer which, quite uniquely, tastes just like every other flavourless mass-produced lager out there. Still, they clearly put the shits up the artists playing because every single one of them mentioned it in a slightly nervous way, which was a little peculiar. Consequently I feel it is my duty to say: don't bother, it's just the same as the rest of the piss-water these buffoons try and sell us. Anyhow, this evening's lineup was not quite [...]

flying back to chi-town tomorrow. we're fighting the war over there . so what do i have to worry about? The Delgados "Mr. Blue Sky (Peel Session 2002)" (ELO Cover) ( das music on point)

Accused of Stealing - The Delgados Before I found The Delgados, they released five full-length records. And numerous singles and EPs. They played many live shows. People (including John Peel) fell in love with their music. And maybe fell in love to their music (and then perhaps out of love to their music, but hopefully not out of love with ). And The Delgados broke up. Before I found The Delgados, a good band was born [...]

They tried to make me go see Amy Winehouse . I said no, no, no. But then with a bit of arm twisting and cajoling I reluctantly agreed to go. I guess that's what happens when you buy your girlfriend a couple of tickets as a present. So tonight, I'm heading to Birmingham Academy to see the aforementioned Ms Winehouse. Now I'm not mad keen on her music but I shall be venturing out with an open mind and hopefully I'll enjoy it. Besides, I thought her performance at The Brits was the [...]

It's a time of transition. School's started up again, and while that means concerts, it also means that time for blogging will be limited, or at least shifted (go insomnia). I'm also not really sure where this blog is going, as it's definitely beginning to evolve into more than just live music. I guess this is another attempt to mix things up a bit, but I promise that I'll provide a live music fix tomorrow later today for those of you craving it. The other day, Pitchfork [...]

As lovely as Florence was, it is fantastic to be back. For all its downsides, I really do enjoy the information overload. I'm obliged to compile my excessive tourism, so expect some photos in the near future. Aside from the camera abuse, I came to a realization that, while live sets remain my bread and butter, I'm really limiting myself by avoiding "normal" studio recordings. There are inevitably songs and artists that I'd love to mention, but unfortunately live recordings aren't always available. However, in an environment flooded with recommendations, I'd really [...]

I'd feel terrible if I didn't mention the Delgados once more this year. It's funny how hearing a random band name (particularly when it's in association with a familiar one) can yield such great results. This was the case with the Big Takeover 's interview with Stars , in which both Lush and this wonderful group were mentioned. When I last featured them, my listening was more or less confined to Hate , and the tracks reflected that. While a great album, their follow up and final [...]

The clusterfuck of music continues. . . "We Dance" "We Dance (Alt. Mix)" by PAVEMENT: The deluxe 2CD rerelease of Pavement's third album, Wowee Zowee , hit the streets a few weeks ago. I almost ordered a copy until I scanned over the tracklisting and realized that I, in some format or another, own almost all of the material. Thank god for eMusic.com, where I'd previously bought most of the b-sides from the likes of the Pacific Trim EP. It was just [...]

Today's Peel artist is a band that for some unknown reason slipped beneath my critical radar and as such I knew of their name but not their music. They are the Scotland's Delgados , formed in 1994 and named after the Spanish Cyclist Pedro Delgado. The band members were also the founders of the record label Chemikal Underground that gave that all important chance to many young Scottish bands to enter the studios and release their first record. Their own records wasted little time in attracting the attention and praise of the musical press and John Peels ears. During [...]

Keeping It Peel... I meant to post a picture I took of the John Peel memorial mural in Brighton when I was there in 2005, but I never got around to it -- here's a link to some people who did, though . And, in honor of John Peel Day , since we didn't schedule a tribute gig (however, The Limelight in San Antonio have devoted this weekend to Peel's memory), here's some cool Peel Session tracks from the way, way back in the vault... (N.B. the quality's kind of sketchy on some of these...) [...]
Do you find that, like me, you're purchasing more music now than you did before internet postings made getting new music easy? In an age of free information, I find that when I come across something I truly appreciate, I end up buying it, and I'm coming across more music that I appreciate because of the free exchange of information. That being said, I also come across a whole heap of crap, too, but I'm not as bothered by the crap as I used to be (probably because I don't have to pay for it). I'm [...]

No. 21: "All You Need Is Hate" The Delgados Hate, 2002 Here's what I recently wrote about the single "Hate": Of course, much like The Beatles' number, this little pastiche is done with a smidge of humor (an element of the song oblivious to most Beatles zealots, methinks). With "All You Need Is Hate," lines such as "I believe it's better to inflict than to attempt relief" and Hate is everywhere/Inside your mother's heart and you will find it there" [...]

I'm in a quandry. I have a decision to make. A big decision. But I'm not sure I can do it. But I have to. Oooh decisions, decisions. Pros and cons are being weighed up on both sides. The head versus the heart. Heart versus the head. But both could be right. How does one decide? How? I don't know. Maybe I should toss a coin. Or play paper, scissors, stone for it. Best of 3? Or 5? Maybe some good music will help me forget about having to do [...]

The Delgados - Mr Blue Sky (ELO) The Strokes - Clampdown (The Clash) Cat Power - Dreams (Everly Brothers) Elbow - Teardrop (Massive Attack) Muse - The House of the Rising Sun (The Animals) Bigger, better post later.

This week gives us an abundance of wonderful new album releases. With the lackluster offering from last week, this definitely makes up for that in impressive fashion. Most of these I haven't listened to in their entirety, but i've heard enough to warrant a recommendation and/or should just get mentioned anyways. Please sample these songs and buy the albums!
