It was easy, it was cheap, go and do it! This is the original punk DIY anthem. It's charming, literate, wordy, creative, positive and more than a little nerdy. Substandard guitars, wheezy keyboards and clunky drums aren't obstacles to be overcome, however, they're all part of the mix and the message. It doesn't matter if that's all you can afford. You don't need a record label or a contract. You don't need fancy equipment. All you need to connect to a few hundred like-minded people is a bit of drive and determination, [...]

The store recently began purchasing a rather large and expansive punk 45 collection. Punk collectors are notoriously stingy when it comes to parting with their records, but they're usually meticulous and take great pride in keeping their collections in good condition. We've purchased several hundred 45s from this guy so far, and really it only amounts to the very tip of the iceberg. A lot of the high-end original pieces (Child Molesters, Chiefs, DRI, Ebba Gron) were purchased quickly (in what was perhaps the quickest sale of a high-end vinyl piece in the history of the store, someone called and [...]
JC who writes the Vinyl Villain is not so much a blog-pal - someone who writes a blog that covers similar territory to mine - as an actual pal. A truer gent and a more generous soul you will never meet, which makes his latest plan no less than completely characteristic. There's been a fair bit [...]

Once again, this post features a band introduced to me by the encyclopedic Roland Woodbe. DIY 70s punk is a sound I hold dear to my heart for its honest, tenacious, backbone. These bands were not in the game to make it big, rather they were more concerned with creating their own sound and releasing music on their own terms. Out of the dozens of bands I could mention (and may do in the future) the Desperate Bicycles are by far my favorites for epitomizing true independence. They began in 1977 specifically [...]

I mentioned in a previous post that I used to dabble in the visual arts. I had a raw, fairly modest talent for drawing and painting that has long since atrophied into insignificance. Most of blame for that lies with my utter lack of anything even vaguely resembling discipline and my total disdain for repetitive tasks, but the decisive factor that killed any interest I had in becoming an artist was the Drawing 101 class I took as a sophomore in college. The class was taught by an MBA graduate student who had been an undergrad art major. [...]
Desperate Bicycles - Advice on Arrest Charming. It's certainly not how a band like the Desperate Bicycles would like to be remembered. Yet in post-ironic, market-led 2006, this low budget, low-fi, earnest and defiantly DIY band are inevitably going to look dated, a historical curiosity. We're going to find their passion and ideological drive amusing. Ideology's dead, don't you know? We're all pragmatists these days. Makes me sick. "It was easy, it was cheap, go and do it!" This was the call of [...]
