Live albums aren't always something we jump on here at Nine Bullets but exceptions can always happen. The new live album from The Devil Makes Three deserves the exception. This thing is badass and Essential Listening (editor's note: I totally agree) and let me tell you why. Their most recent album, Do Wrong Right , was released in 2009 so it's been a few years since we've seen anything from them. Chances are you're not familiar with them. I only discovered them a few months ago thanks to that [...]
Forgive me for slacking. It had been my intention to provide these posts more often than they have appeared but things like taking my dog to the dog park and watching The Rachel Maddow Show have kept me from compiling links. But here you go. We posted a bunch of new Lucero songs not too long ago and here is an excellent interview with Ben Nichols where he discusses the new album Women & Work . Thanks No Depression . There are several videos on youtube of Glossary playing [...]

Celtic rock band Flogging Molly 's annual "Green 173 tour is a true St. Patrick's Day tradition (we'd put it up there with drinking Guinness and blacking out.) The trek's 2012 iteration will kick off on February 17th in Detroit, MI and wrap up one month later on St. Patty's Day in Tempe, AZ. Joining the band in supporting roles will be Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears and The Devil Make Three, with more acts to be announced shortly. Peep the full tour schedule below, and purchase your tickets here . Just after the itinerary is a live version [...]

Have you ever had a buddy tell you, (insert band name) is great, but you really need to see them live? You roll your eyes and call him (insert derogative name) and move on with your day. Well, get ready because that's the message I am about to deliver to you. There are a number of bands rolling around the country these days that get people worked up, but I have yet to see one who whips the crowd into a raucous frenzy like The Devil Makes Three. As I mentioned back when we had them in for [...]

We are really digging on Brown Bird and are excited to welcome them to Indianapolis on November 5th, at Radio Radio, when they come to town with The Devil Makes Three. I'm racking up the views of their recent session video performance of " Bilgewater ." We've also got a new cut called " End Of Days ," from the duo's upcoming release, Salt For Salt , which drops on Oct. 18th. MP3 : [...]

Brown Bird will open for The Devil Makes Three at the upcoming MOKB Presents show at Radio Radio in November. We've got a couple of really nice treats from the duo today. Lead singer, David Lamb used to work at Blount Boats in Rhode Island, and recently decided to stop by and record this excellent version of " Bilgewater " atop a huge army vessel. MorganEve Swain provides backing vocals and cello work. The session vid was filmed by Brittany Thorsteinsson and Steve Legare and edited by Steve Legare. [...]

I signed up to go to this show about a month in advance. Mandolin Orange is probably one of my favorite local bands, and I had recently started listening to Devil Makes Three . However, Sunday night concerts are usually a little rough to attend. While I may be dedicated to the 8-hour of sleep per night, the impending Monday morning did not stop Cat's Cradle from filling up at 9 p.m. to hear the melancholy folk of Mandolin Orange's Emily Frantz and Andrew Marlin, followed by Devil Makes Three. The talented duo played the [...]

By Brian Hodge Dave Lamb has got some striking ink. The bearded singer (and guitarist and percussionist) of Brown Bird boasts sailing ships, dark bands and other interesting designs. But the most captivating piece resides on the lengths of his fingers, between his first and second knuckles. It is there you can see the word "COME" clearly scrawled down his hand, the 'c' beginnning on the index and the word unapologetically creeping towards the pinky. On his opposite hand lives the word "HOME." Put [...]

There's nothing more beautiful than a Friday afternoon. It doesn't matter that the temperature fluctuates so wildly that we can longer dress ourselves effectively or that it will probably rain. It's Friday. And that's enough. As you can tell by the show poster above, we're excited about the Best Emerging Artists Showcase lovingly put together by Betta Promotions and Deli Chicago. But that's not the only hot spot this weekend. We're also talking about Young Widows at Beat Kitchen and Dozens at the Empty Bottle . Let's get to it... [...]
The current trend of lo-fi garage rock has it's kings and peasants. Acts like Best Coast, Wavves, and Girls have all risen above simply Pitchfork-notification, gaining prominent festival slots and having their tunes used in other media. But as with every musical trend, there are a million imitators waiting to break "big", and while Times New Viking show glimpses of higher success, something about new album "Dancer Equired" just doesn't seem good enough. The concept of sound being music and not music being music is hardly new, but you can't always have guitars so clearly out of sync [...]

Cooper McBean and Pete Bernhard were kind enough to sit down with me before their show at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland and school me in what bluegrass is, what The Devil Makes Three is, and how they are two totally different things. melophobe : So I hear Eugene is a pretty fun place to hang out. DM3 : Yeah. We had a great show there. melophobe : Did it sell out also? [...]

On Sunday night, less than a league from home, I hitched my wagon near the entrance of the Wonder Ballroom before a barricade of desperate rain-soaked beggars standing on the curb. They were begging not for food or money or work, but for tickets to see acoustic-juke-band-blues heroes, The Devil Makes Three . One such peasant with black mascara pooled under her eyes rejoiced as I walked toward the door, for she had just exchanged $60 in panhandled silver coins for a scalped ticket. Hiding my shock, I commended her devotion. Behind me, an envious gentleman wearing [...]

On July 25th, 1965, one of the most fabled concert moments in history occurred when Bob Dylan plugged in his guitar at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, RI. In homage to that man's "Subterranean Homesick Blues," this year's George Wein's Newport Folk Festival line-up was revealed with the help of fans turning over cards displaying the artists' names. And like years past, those names make one hell of a lineup. The Decemberists, Emmylou Harris, and Elvis Costello (solo acoustic) will all make return appearances, this time as headliners. Other familiar faces making a [...]

Portland's The Builders and the Butchers fail to disappoint once again with their newest release, Dead Reckoning . Staying true to their previous recipe, Ryan Solee's voice is rugged and guides the Spanish-influenced, fast-moving strings and the Southern Gothic percussion and brass. Dead Reckoning , [...]
It's the end of the year and in addition to gingerbread, whiskey cider, and Vince Guaraldi, it's also time to look back at the albums that defined my year. This is not a list of of album from 2010. This is a list of the albums that were the most present and perpetually in play in both the background and foreground of my life. Making an end of year mix tape? Check out the attached music and see if my selections sound like your version of 2010. Later we can all [...]
The Devil Makes Three have long been HearYa favorites and their session with us is one that I frequently dive back into. The band spent most of 2010 touring and will hopefully hit the studio in 2011 to give us a follow up to their outstanding 2009 release, Do Wrong Right . Until then, they've dropped a new video for "Aces and Twos" that features black and white still images. The Devil Makes Three - All Hail Video: The Devil Makes Three - Aces and [...]
