THE DEVIL MAKES THREE, SASSPARILLA JUG BAND (Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie) With the oceanside township of Santa Cruz, CA, serving as their center of operations, the Devil Makes Three have shimmied a strut the nation over, conjuring vivid revelations of porch-front hoedowns with mason jar swigs and a soundtrack of blustery bluegrass punk. Frontman Pete Bernhards nostalgic croon and choppy acoustic guitar strums lay the groundwork for upright bassist Lucia Turinos groove-riddled low-end and Cooper McBeans tenor banjo and fiery guitar interplay, forging an evocative blast of 1940s folk and 1990s retro-punk revivalism. But dont let the [...]
(photos from the Miss Rockaway Armada's time in North Adams, MA) Going to toot my own horn for a second (cause like my friend says "Who else is gonna do it for you?"). You can see a photo spread of my medium format work from China in the new issue of Death & Taxes . It's a nice mag, with fine design and production quality. Also this is kind of interesting , seems like the RIAA's era of organized-crime-style extortion [...]
We are (if I may say so myself) a pretty awesome collection of people over on the Lucero message board . No drama, no flame wars and real conversations…a message board anamoly to be sure. Well, each month we all submit tracks and one kind soul arranges it all and puts the comp up for all of us to download. Don't let this month's cover art fool you, it has all the Irish drinking music and what not that one would expect from a March compilation cd. You can download the entire compilation here . There is a [...]

I came across these guys by complete accident. Somebody sent me a PR email about some band whose name I can not even remember, but instead of direct linking to a sample mp3, they gave me link to a directory with a bunch of mp3's, including a song by the now forgotten band that was being promoted. I went ahead and scanned the other mp3's to see what else was in there and one particular band name caught my attention. One listen and I was ordering the cd. That's how I came to know The Devil Makes Three. [...]

There is something right about The Devil Makes Three 's reissue of their 2002 eponymous debut's availability on vinyl LP. The Devil Makes Three is a trio from San Francisco who plays music in a style that is largely influenced by folk but draws additional color and rhythm from 20's and 30's blues and bluegrass as well as drawing from a punk ethos. What does this mean? If you like the Violent Femmes first record or bands like 16 Horsepower , The Squirrel Nut Zippers , and possibly The Gun Club [...]

Well, as soon as I mentioned that it was cold and gloomy in Austin the clouds disappeared and the temperature jumped up a few degrees, thus eliminating any desire that I had to seek out music with a more appropriate sound for the season. Considering the weather in Texas though, there is a good chance that the mugginess will come roaring back at any time. Until then, let's all get out of our chairs and warm ourselves up with the raucous sound of The Devil Makes Three. The trio, which is made up of Pete (slide guitar), [...]
A week or two back a ran dom sele ction of music blogs received a track from Milan Entertainment and the band The Devil Makes Three . As I usually immediately delete any bulk email sent my way it was an anomoly that I opened the email at all, but the band name and the song "Old Number Seven" rang a bell. All the other blogs ran with whatever information was included in the email or threw the song up with only a cursory "this [...]

It's been a rough day here at work for me so I only have a single track from my inbox for you today. Hope you guys enjoy this tune and I'll try to have more for you as the week moves on. The Devil Makes Three - "Old Number Seven" A long, long time ago I posted a mix that was full of fantastic drinking songs, unfortunately this song wasn't out when I made that mix otherwise it certainly would

I didn't even bother to proofread this, so if there are errors, forgive me. ** The Devil Makes Three . Milan Entertainment sent me a song from this band that makes me want to get really drunk. Mostly because it's a song about drinking, and its blues/folk sound just makes me think I'm sitting in a seedy back alley bar where they serve you whiskey in a dirty glass. The Devil Makes Three - " Old Number Seven " [...]

Man, this cold is kicking my butt. Right now I'm loopy on a cocktail of Sudafed, Airborne, and Halls. Being the trooper I am, though, I've dragged my laptop over to the couch and will post a couple of things for you good people. I think I'll make the "Music From My Mailbox" a semi-regular feature around here. Maybe every other Sunday, depending how much music I get. I appreciate those who send me tunes and I don't want anyone to think they're being ignored, but by the same token, my inbox isn't really being deluged with stuff. [...]

Tom Waits - Lie To Me . I was so excited to find this track. I heard him play it live when I saw him this summer, and immediately fell in love with it, and then discovered it's one of the tracks on Orphans . (Which is just a very exciting release to begin with. . .three discs, filled with tons of previously unreleased or hard-to-find tracks!) "Lie To Me" is a sexy rockabilly number, where the singer is begging his lover to lie to him. Quite the opposite of most pop songs, which all [...]
