. "Come down down down From the moon Neil Armstrong You've been up there too long And it's time to come home" Neil Armstrong , astronaut, test pilot, Korean War vet, Purdue Boilermaker , baritone horn player, fellow Leo, and giant leaper of renown, died today at 82. On July 20, 1969 (two weeks before I was born), Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon, uttering his now famous phrase, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." I don't [...]

It never ceases to amaze, the high quality material being release by Alive Naturalsound Records . Their latest discovery is Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires , a four-piece Birmingham-based band that combines classic Southern fried rawk with just a splash (why yes, that is a Misfits frock that Bains is sporting above) of punk attitude. Of course, Bains himself is no stranger to the music biz. As a founding member of the near legendary Dexateens, he's crisscrossed the great land countless times and razed many a stage. And while [...]
![Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires – There Is A Bomb In Gilead [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4271397_lg.jpg)
I recently delved into the Twitter world and found some of it fascinating and useful; other parts contrived and nonsensical. But I have Twitter to thank for finding Lee Bains III & The Glory Fires when The Futurebirds tweeted about how they were the best thing since sliced bread. While I still might be partial to sliced bread, this album is awesome. And like The Futurebirds , it turns out that Lee Bains III had paid HearYa a visit while a member of The Dexateens for their live session . Simply put - this album sounds like [...]

im gonna be super honest here, my laziness has probably led to me overlooking some great records. i am going to actually going admit that i know it has, and thats a god damn shame. its like do i listen to bee thousand for the 1000th time or say birmingham's 13ghosts most recent release, liar's melody ? well, as you can probably guess, it took me a while, but finally gave the latter record more than a few solid listens over the past week and damn! im glad i did. in case you didnt know 13ghosts is [...]
Stepping back and looking at early 00s, one thing that stands out is how colorful tee shirts were and how no one was really wearing plaid and flannel yet. In this older interview with the Dexateens Elliott McPherson talks about how some of the bands best shows didn't even take place on stage . ( from R&G ) Dexateens: Makers Mound.mp3 Here they are today-ish:

i am not sure what the name of this joint exactly is, it may be cafe prytania or prytania music and spirits, but whatever its name is, i am sure its going to be all kinds of kick ass tomorrow night as lee bains III & the glory fires invade new orleans. lee bains III & the glory fires were born out of the ashes of the great birmingham band the dexateens, who may or may not have called it quits. i may have my info wrong, but thats just what ive heard. i havent heard [...]

"We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive...." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas. And a voice was screaming "Holy Jesus! What are these goddamn animals?" - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas [...]
All the music you don't want to miss this weekend

At the risk of sounding like the meteorologists that seems to get it right, only 50% of the time, but I see nothing but blue skies for the rest of the week. Spring maybe around the corner, but it's been a bit damp/snowy 'round these parts, and I put together another "Sad Bastard" mix for your listening pleasures. Alexi Murdoch-All My Days Dexateens -Can You Whoop It She & Him -Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want Yo La Tengo -When It's Dark Blitzen [...]

It ain't every day that a guy's favorite team wins the championship in glorious, tradition-rich college football. And if that guy's favorite team is the Alabama Crimson Tide ... his alma mater, no less ... then perhaps a musical celebration is in order. So, in honor of my beloved Tide and their 14-0 run to Waterford crystal , I've put together a 40-minute playlist of songs dedicated to Alabama. You get some twang, some folk, a little jazz, and of course we rock the house. A couple choices are Crimson Tide specific, others [...]
Cheers to old friends and friendships that stretch continents. This week’s show still went on even though I spent a good majority being lazy and eating yummy food with some of my favorite people. This weeks show has been fueled by pizza and soda. I think I have the voiceover quality figured out as well so it should be sounding pretty good and consistent from here on. 17 songs totaling over an hour of music + IP rants and HD TV talk.
The local label will be putting out works by Chooglin', the Dexateens, and the Bombay Sweets.

Dexateens with Dangerbird Location: Zanzabar Louisville Link out: Click here Description: For the better part of the last decade, a band of Alabama garage rockers under the moniker the Dexateens has been bringing their self-styled “skillet rock” to an audience of music lovers that hunger for something that feeds the spirit, sets the soul ablaze, and gives the body the inspiration to jump up and dance, to witness, to testify, and sing along. Dexateens with [...]

As we transition from summer to fall, I think it's only appropriate that we kick summer's angry ass out the door Adios Lounge style. Here's a compilation of music that's helped keep me sane during a summer of continuous 100+ degree weather. I think it's a good mix of soul and rock, but those designations are a bit loose. The soul stuff rocks and the rock stuff has soul, so everyone wins. Incidentally, if someone asked you what the Adios Lounge sounds like, you could probably do worse than send them this mix. I'll [...]

New Adios Lounge mission statement? Just throwing it out there. It's either this or the thing about team-building, synergy, and never giving in to our robot overlords. Frankly, I'm torn. Anyhoo, while I work on a post that includes the likes of Sam Cooke and Doug Sahm ... and maybe a certain EC ... let me send along a couple of shout-outs and cover some bric-a-brac. Muchas gracias to Daniel Chamberlin of Arthur Magazine, who was gracious enough to profile two of my pieces on Doug Sahm: 'Thanksgiving Jam 1972' and the annotated [...]

Earlier, I hinted that you would be hearing about the album I thought was the find of the summer, but really all the credit goes to LD over at the The Adios Lounge who has been carrying the Dexateens torch and got me to pick up their latest effort Singlewide . I suggest that you do the same. First, a little background for those of you, who like me until three months ago, didn't even know this band. The Dexateens are based out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama [...]
Alabama vets, The Dexateens were to kind enough to stop by our studio earlier this summer. My appreciation for this band has grown over the years and the turning point was when they worked with Patterson Hood on Hardwire Healing. Patterson is one of the icons of the alt-country genre and his influence is ever present in the music of The Dexateens. Their latest effort, Singlewide , has enjoyed steady play in my rotation this summer. I've said it before but it bears repeating - it is the perfect evening album for the summer. It's easy-going vibe [...]

Dexateens - Neil Armstrong [ buy CD ] [ buy LP ] "Come down down down from the moon, Neil Armstrong, You've been up there too long and it's time to come home." It's been far too long my GP homies. It is indeed good to come home. And on the occasion of Team Apollo's 40th, what better occasion to celebrate themes of exploration, homecoming, loneliness, and I'm pretty sure stuff about chicks. The Dexateens hail from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and typically wield loud, electric guitars like chainsaws. However, this [...]
Here's a pair of videos from one of my favorite bands, The Dexateens. Both songs are from their new album, Singlewide , released last month by Skybucket Records. Fans of The Jayhawks , Faces , Exile -era Stones , and Drive-By Truckers ... pay heed. If you're like me, you might also be thinking, "Wait a second. They still make videos???" Exactly. That's how old-school the Dexateens are. They actually make videos and release albums on the vintage compact disc format. You can't buy that kinda street cred on teh googles. [...]

The Dexateens take it easy on Singlewide . Building on the success of Hardwire Healing and using a few tricks they picked up while working with Patterson Hood of Drive-By Truckers, the boys from Alabama decide to dial things down a notch on their fourth album. And while the amps may not be as high as the old days of Red Dust Rising , the songwriting has never been better. Led by Elliot McPherson and John Smith, Singlewide produces a sound more fitting of a back porch than a smoky rock club. [...]
