photo credit: Joe Fuda As Matthew of I(Heart)Music has done over the past four years, he's again polled a selection of Canadian music writers, journalists and bloggers for their top ten hottest Canadian bands / artists of the year . I've always been happy to participate and this year's not any different. In some ways, I'm behind the curve on some of the new artists that made the top 32 - bands like The Balconies , The Wooden Sky and Bruce Peninsula who I've [...]

Last Tuesday the band released a new 5-song EP, Old Story, Fresh Road , on 12" clear vinyl and digital download. (You can buy a copy of the former from the band at their shows or order it from their website .) The album was recorded with the help of Laurence Currie, who's produced Can-rock favourites like Sloan and Wintersleep. On Friday I went to see the band perform at their homebase, the Boat in Kensington Market. (The Deebs practice there, and their bassist runs the venue.) The show was a testament to the hard work and skill [...]

( Note: I'm mentioning last night's Wombat Wednesdays Valentine's special after the fact, because a) February curator Magali Meagher has several more Wombat Wednesdays scheduled this month, and b) several performers have upcoming shows, including Gentleman Reg's in-store and CD release, and Levi Macdougall & Katie Crown at Laugh Sabbath and, well, my shows . The Wombats in Love show was slated for a profile yesterday on the site, but I've been a busy fella, and I [...]

This week, there's editions of the politically inflammatory theatre night The Wrecking Ball , and of the always popular odd lecture series Trampoline Hall ; Magali Meagher curates a special Valentine's inspired Wombat Wednesday event, featuring celebrity couples and odd pairs; Sean Cullen and Nick Flanagan bring their comedy shows (" The Sean Schau " and " J oke Club ", respectively) back to life [...]

Davida Nemeroff Seminal new music showcase Wavelength - across whose stage pretty much every Toronto indie band of note from the last decade or so has passed - celebrates its ninth anniversary next month and as they've done pretty much every year that I can remember, they're marking the occasion with a full weekend of shows at venues all across the city. The full lineup was announced over the holidays, and the evenings of February 12 through the 15th will look something like this: On the 12th it's spooky folk [...]

The Diableros' first album You Can't Break The Strings In Our Olympic Hearts was a head trip of swirling Farfisa and fuzz-drenched 12-string guitar pop that I liked as is but had many tempering their enthusiasm with complaints about the mix. Yeah, Pete Carmichael's voice was low in the mix and the guitar and organ way up, but to me that was part of the rough charm of the record. We agreed to disagree. But the band apparently took this to heart as their follow-up, [...]

I love that fuzzy jangly guitar sound from the early 90's. Wrap it in some lo-fi production with buried vocals and a few hooks to suck me in and I'm sold. That's basically what Toronto's The Diableros did with their 2006 debut album You Can't Break the Strings in Our Olympic Hearts . Their name would give you the impression that they have a Latin music twinge to their sound. However, these guys are all shoegaze. No mariachis here. Apparently, the name refers to people who [...]
Not being an expert mix maker, I spent a long time debating a theme for this one. Should I do one special for Ryan’s birthday? Tracks from 2006 I felt people might be missing and needed to hear? Or all tracks from albums I picked up at the Pitchfork Music Festival record fair? Well… I [...]
Please welcome Marlon to Good Hodgkins. Marlon is an English major at Ohio Wesleyan University who I met as a consequence of running this website. He's been pestering me for some time now to let me let him post something here, and this post is the result of that pestering. So [...]
Every once and a while I try to review pervious post to ensure the video links still work. Luckily YouTube currently has thousands of videos on their site. So it is fairly easy to find an alternate, and sometimes better, version of a particular clip (e.g. The Simpsons clip I post a few weeks back). So long story short, if you come across a video on this site that does not work, let me know and I will fix it accordingly. The 2006 BET Awards aired earlier this week. Despite not being as strong as last [...]
