Early in their set of thrashing, frantic mathcore on Sunday night, The Dillinger Escape Plan 's lead singer Greg Puciato pulled himself up by the chains of a hanging PA speaker at the DNA Lounge, leaning dangerously forward ten feet above the shoulder-crushing mosh pit on the floor. It's been interesting watching New Jersey mathcore outfit The Dillinger Escape Plan develop, that's for sure. While other bands may view losing members through injury as a major setback, for them it's merely an occupational hazard (what with their live shows being the stuff of legend), and their revolving-door member policy means that their fifth album is the first one on which the band's line-up has actually stabilised from one record to the next. Theres an odd little moment during One of Us Is the Killer , not long into the title track, when Billy Rymers drums seem to get away from him for a second. This is, of course, deliberate design, the apparent flub actually a brilliant jazz-like move, one that gains power as it recurs. Rymers trickery is but one of several twists on a track that sadly proves the exception and not the rule. Defined by angular chord stabs over the mathematic, shredding riffs usually expected from The Dillinger Escape Plan, lead single 'Prancer' turns out to be a pretty good representation of 'One Of Us Is The Killer' as a whole. Though there are plenty of technical riffs written large and small across this record, the overall feel is of something sharp but flat, a knife rather than a needle.
