Original Toronto punks The Diodes are set to invade the town once again. The influential band will be playing the Horseshoe Tavern on November 17th . The band are celebrating 34 years together (god I was 1 when these guys got together), but more importantly, they are welcoming the arrival of the remastered edition of their 1980 album Action Reaction . The Diodes are still very relevant, having unwittingly provided the soundtrack to my life with a new baby: the classic " Tired Of Waking Up Tired ". [...]

Many are unaware of this, but Canada did contribute to the original wave of punk bands in the late 70s and early 80s. Those bands were mostly forgotten for decades, until author Liz Worth got turned on to those early Canuck punk acts, like The Diodes , and decided to track down as many of those bands as she could find, and write a book about their recollections of the scene. The result is Treat Me Like Dirt: An Oral History Of Punk In Toronto and Beyond . [...]

The Diodes : Red Rubber Ball [ purchase ] When I did an interview with Bob Mould in the early nineties, the former Hüsker Dü guitarist alerted me to almost forgotten Canadian punk band the Diodes. According to Mould, their untitled first album was even better than the Ramones´ debut, as (and I quote) "a guitar solo came by every now and then." [...]

I haven't posted very much over the last few months so here's a gift, southern ontario punk rock from the late 1970's. These bands all formed in '75/'76, the colonies/the poor northern cousins answer to DIY bands coming out the US and the UK. It seems that there was a seed in music in that time period that germinated at the same time in western speaking countries. Why?, ( in Canada it was CANCON ) who knows but the late 1970's was a very rich time for music and the [...]

While not as happening as New York, London, or LA, Toronto did have a punk scene of it's own in the late '70s.One of the leading lights was Toronto's Diodes. The Diodes are best known for their hit "Tired Of Waking Up Tired", which came up on my iPod to inspire this in the first place. The band had a brief reunion a few years ago, but now I'd like to know whatever happened to The Diodes?

Not sure what radio is like in other countries, but Canada has a rule that we call CanCon (Canadian Content) which has been around since 1971. To give you a quick overview of what Cancon is, presently Canadian radio stations must play at least 35% Canadian talent . (back when the CRTC implemented it in the 70's it was around 20%)They use a rule called MAPL , that breaks down how talent can be classified as Canadian. There have be fights left right and [...]
What a post delay, huh? I'm very much the type of person whose interests come in waves and the blog wave just didn't hit me for a while there. Long-time readers are accustomed to this pattern, so I won't necessarily apologize, but I felt a warning was necessary for newer readers. Blah, blah, blah, but now the weather smacks of fall (and fall's my favorite) and the wave crashed into me today and here I am. Another wave that's pummeled me (aside form a momentary desire to use annoying Internet abbreviations) the past week is [...]
