As major labels continue to exist behind the times, artists and labels with little capital and lesser reputations are producing some of the most innovative, interesting, and inspiring music. Whether it's creating a new niche in digital technology or looking to once obsolete formats, Agitated Atmosphere hopes to pull back the curtain on a wealth of sights and sound from luminaries such as Six Organs of Admittance . The loss of Ben Chasny from Seattle (however temporary his stay) is a hole that will be hard to fill. Chasny's presence in town lent itself to [...]
Dirge Within, the band featuring former SOiL guitarist Shaun Glass, has announced that they will be entering the studio this December to begin work on their next release. A message from Glass reads as follows: "First off the reason I have written about this is the amount of fans asking me as well as friends in bands as well. I am not in SOiL nor... Download: Wormrot- Noise Y'all may remember back in April when I reviewed the new Wormrot LP, Dirge . Damn, that album was loud, fast, intricate, intense, and catchy. Basically, it had everything I could want in a grindcore record. I'm not the kind of person who needs to be listening to the fastest band out there. I'm just happy to hear some musicians actually playing together without sounding overproduced-or underproduced, hah-in this genre. The Singapore band is cointinuing its [...]
Record number three from this Italian noise rock / stoner doom power trio, and weirdly enough the first one of their records to get reviewed on the aQ list. Weird because these guys are amazing and are right up our (and presumably your) alley, a killer twisted hybrid of classic Sabbathy metal and more modern noise rock, downtuned Neurosis-y sludge and spaced out psychedelic dronemetal, a la
Stumbling through a thick fog with car lights streaming through the haze; you can't focus your eyes and your feet sink into whatever it is you're walking on. Then at exactly 4:22 the whole place lights up and just crawls with death, and you just keep on walking. This is an amazing epic dirge by severely underrated NYC shoegaze duo, Bowery Electric, released on Kranky in 1995. MP3: Bowery Electric - Slow Thrills

Jill Scott's long-awaited return to music has finally arrived with the release of her fourth studio album, The Light Of The Sun . In recent years, Scott has been primarily known for her acting chops, transitioning with ease from the small screen (HBO's The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency ) to the big screen (Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? ). Scott's latest effort picks up where she left off nearly four years ago as she explores familiar themes of love, relationships and personal growth. [...]

News Veteran all-girl Canadian metal outfit KITTIE will embark on a U.S.
Wormrot's brand of grindcore will probably strike most people as being old school. Their dedication to thrash metal riffs and a natural-sounding production style calls back to the genre's salad days in the 80s. But not everything here is from the past. The band's intensity and speedy drums and guitar definitely feel 2011. To me, this album is a reminder that musical movements can miss great things if everyone is in a rush to follow a trend or new extreme. Going back and putting a modern twist on an old [...]

"Principle of Puppet Warfare" MP3 Singapore's Wormrot will be dropping an LP titled Dirge on Earache Recs this May. In the meantime, the label has been awesome enough to allow fans to download the entire album for free on their website-for the price of an e-mail address of course. This thing is one of the most fun grindcore records I've heard in a while. I know "fun" isn't usually a word people associate with the genre, but the band's thrash riffs and neck-snapping speeds are too exhilarating for me to [...]

Ben posts too much post-rock. ZZZZZ Wormrot, those grind-freaks from Singapore (which BTW, has the highest execution rate in Asia and was voted "Best Judicial System" by a bunch of business executives. WTF?) released their follow-up to last years debut full length ABUSE , and have kept the break-neck momentum going with h DIRGE. With none of the songs on this 25 track album going over two minutes, Dirge is short as well as addictive. With plenty of tempo changes, and some creative vocal delivery from [...]

With lyrics from Shakespeare, Beth Gibbons exceptionally sings. Julie Taymor's experimental film adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest was quite unfortunate and problematic. Helen Mirren as the female Prospera (not the male Prospero, as in the original play) was brilliant but too underused. The comic bits, which could have been well-performed, basically ruined the film. But "Prospera's Coda", a song that immediately followed the film, was most touching, dark, and brooding. Shakespeare wrote the lyrics, and Beth Gibbons of Portishead fame took over on...

News I may spend a lot of time bagging on head honcho Digby Pearson, but I gotta hand it to Earache Records: they're definitely willing to experiment with the power of the Internet more than any other metal label. Exhibit A) Dig's Ask Earache blog. Exhibit B) That free Gama Bomb album download experiment. Exhibit C) [...]
