The 2012 Bruise Cruise , a 3-day voyage with tons of great live music, sets sail February 10th, and four new 73 singles are being released to commemorate the occasion. Last year's volumes 1-4 singles featured artists like The Black Lips , Ty Segall , and Thee Oh Sees and sold out fast! This years lineup is just as strong, and we expect them to move just as quick. Here's this years selection: Vol. 5 - Neil Hamburger - "Tribute to Our Brave Deceased Celebrities" one-sided [...]
By: Rinjo Njori You've read the "Yearvolution 2011", but now it is time to listen to "Part Un". Not only is this podcast dedicated to the fading format of the podcast, but also the fading beverage known as the "malt liquor". If you can't call music from Social D, Bass Drum of Death, Supertouch, Black Joe Lewis, etc. the Best of 2011-- then just look at it as an excuse to enjoy a "forty" of Colt

It finally happened. Winter arrived. Snow fell and we woke up this past Sunday with about three inches of the stuff. I'm glad it didn't arrive earlier, as Friday saw me at KSVR for a four hour stint of music. The first two hours flirted with folk music and the latter half was full-on garage rock, garage pop and psychedelic pop. Much of the 10 to midnight show came courtesy Finest Kiss , who posted some great 2011 lists. Taking [...]

And might I mean that quite literally. Not 'probably functional', it's still all very much up in the air, but it's plausible I might be back in something resembling the land of the living. I think the work which had to be done pretty much immediately has had the effect of jump-starting a spluttering brain. The Josh T. Pearson Toad Session is finished and ready to publish next weekend (assuming he's happy with it), and Ian and I have been plotting this year's Song, by Toad Records er, strategy, if you can call it that (just listen to [...]

A year end albums list is kind of a strange thing, especially when it's one person compiling it. Since this blog is a committe of one, it can become quite capricious. In all likelyhood I wrote about some records this past year that I was overtly enthusiastic about at the time. Now the end of the year rolls around and some of those records are not on the list. "What gives?" you might ask. It's hard to remember which label flew me to Tahiti and which one comp'd my CMJ this year, so I may have forgotten to include a [...]

Our sixth guest top ten comes courtesy of our very own Chris T Popper, a small but perfectly formed (and often irritating) younger sibling who has been stealing my records since he had invisible friends as a small child. Chris T Popper's Top 10 10. Little Barrie – Tip It Over The Nottingham trio start off my top 10 with the fabulous Tip It Over . Heavy guitar providing a great riff coupled with a momentum that creeps up on you. There's some [...]

The weekend is finally here. Wrap yourself in hefty layers and go out and enjoy this city's fine offerings! We're talking about Bad Bad Meow at Cole's, Carbon Tigers at Subterranean, and Pillars and Tongues' free in-store at SAKI. Let's get cookin'... FRIDAY BAD BAD MEOW Chicago quartet will unleash their country punk stylings on yet another unsuspecting rock audience at Cole's tonight. The group summon the lyrical prowess [...]

Filed under: News , Video , Exclusive Alex Agnant Nearly a year after Black Lips kicked off the inaugural tropical Bruise Cruise , the tales of hijinx on the high seas are still making the rounds. So unless you prefer to experience your rock'n'roll shenanigans second-hand, you might want to sign up for this year's three-day voyage (Feb. 10-13) from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas. Come set sail with a boat-load of [...]

Been on a Detroit techno kick as of late and in the process stumbled upon a couple of great Versions -worthy covers. For those slaves to the six string who have a hard time separating the "T" word from images of pacifier chomping K-soaked rave zombies or worse, Lady Gaga, need I school you on the fact that real, pure, Motor City techno is the greatest (but most sorely overlooked) contribution to African-American music since jazz or perhaps Parliament. Arguably it's originator is today's tribute fodder, 'Magic' Juan Atkins (AKA Cybotron ), and [...]
Last week, we launched the first mixtape of IRC's Best Songs of 2011 to a relatively strong response from regular readers and visitors. The first volume includes more than 30 top songs originally released in January of this year. They were chosen from dozens upon dozens of tracks email to us directly or that were [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Not sure how we missed this one, but it looks like Michigan natives Brendan Benson (Raconteurs) and Ben Blackwell (Dirtbombs) teamed up on a split 73 paying homage to the city of Detroit. Released last month on Blackwell's Cass Records , the disc features each artist turning in one Detroit themed tune. The single was pressed in an edition of 1000 copies, and each one comes in a hand stamped sleeve. Pick one up here for $7.

As of tomorrow, I will once again have spent the majority of the week's finish in the Smartbar basement. By choice? Debatable. Good booking are shackles these days. Omar S tonight at Smartbar, folks. MP3: The Dirtbombs - Sharivari (Omar S Remix)

[mp3] - Guadalupe Plata: "Pollo Podrio" I've been catching up on Sons of Anarchy this week and so it only seemed appropriate to share a few tunes from Ubeda, Spain's Guadalupe Plata . No, founders Pedro de Dios Barcelo and Carlos Jimena are not Spanish Americans who grew up in 1980s Detroit. They are, ya know, real Spaniards. How they ended up trolling the depths of psych/garage/blue rock is anyone's guess. I'm not [...]

In case you weren't aware, we participate in this Monday Mixer thing which was started by Ben over at The Metropolitan Jolt and basically each week, one of a group of us sends out a theme and everyone picks a song on that theme. This week it was my turn to pick and, not surprisingly, the theme that I went with was lo-fi. Basically, songs that sound like the way the picture above works (by the way, we got that image from futureneer ). Here's what everyone picked, starting with myself. [...]
Garage rockers The Dirtbombs are proud enthusiasts of the music they know and love, and have begun to turn the cover album into an art form. Having already released an LP of soul and funk covers (20012s Ultraglide in Black ), the Detroit-based quintet's latest studio effort, Party Store , is an ode to techno artists of the '80s and '90s from their beloved hometown. In support of the LP, which was released in February, The Dirtbombs are heading out on the road for an eight-city mini-tour that kicks off in Detroit on May 30th with an appearance at [...]

by BBG Dennis Coffey If I had my way, copies of Dennis Coffey 's "Scorpio" and "Theme From Black Belt Jones" would be handed out to every prospective hip hop/funk DJ with the purchase of a pair of turntables; guitarist/wah-pedal-kingpin's breakbeat classic, "Scorpio", has been sampled to infinity since its pressing by Sussex in the early 70's. Between "Scorpio" and his numerous contributions as a member of Motown's " Funk Brothers ", it's safe to [...]
