It's kind of slow week for new releases, but if you're heading to your local record store here are a few we recommended. Actually Beach House's Devotion comes with the highest recommendation we can give. It is truly a gorgeous album and deserves to be heard by all. Do yourself a huge favor and make sure you grab it on Tuesday. New releases, album art, and mp3's after the jump...

I've been enjoying The Dirtbombs cover of "Sherlock Holmes" (originally by Sparks) and I think you should too. Taking the psych-pop of the original and running it through the Dirtbombs filter (2 bassists, 2 drummers, 1 guitarist/singer) leads to a compelling cover... The Dirtbombs' new album, We Have You Surrounded , is due out March 11. The Dirtbombs - Sherlock Holmes The Dirtbombs official site The Dirtbombs on MySpace

Leopardman At C and A is a song written by comic king Alan Moore for Bauhaus. They never got round to recording it so one of our garage rock heroes, motherfucking Mick Collins of The Dirtbombs, took up the challenge. The band's new album We Have You Surrounded is steeped in Moore's special brand of dystopian paranoia and like every Dirtbombs record it jams hard.

The last time we cried in the cinema Macaulay Culkin had just been stung to death by killer bees (so sad!). Then last Sunday we watched The Diving Bell And The Butterfly. Julian Schnabel 's dazzlingly impressionistic adaptation of Jean-Dominique Bauby 's novel had us (us! with our ice-cold hearts!) bawling in the isles. We walked out with snotty noses, humbled by the indomitability of the human spirit. It didn't last long and we're back to hating everything now, but for a while there we felt a little weird.

"Oh God, where are you now?" once sang Detroit's folk hero Sufjan Stevens, and I thought something very similar this morning when I caught the youtube recap of Britney Spear's "return to the stage" at the VMA's. As you know I don't post about pop culture or things like this on a normal day. If you're into that, Stereogum would likely be your best friend. But this, this is an important event. My heart broke a little when I saw it. I wanted Britney to have an awesome and highly talked-about performance. I wanted it to be [...]
Dr Dre producing The Dirtbombs or the sound of a lighting rig falling on Curtis Mayfield's head. There are many ways to describe The Heavy, but their name does a pretty good job on its own.
We have two entirely different music styles from Detroit, Michigan. Two not so different musical styles from Boston, Massachusetts and one kick ass band from the Garden State. The Shuffle Gods were pretty generous today. Song: Francious' Journey Artist: SSD Album: Power Comments: This was late era SSD when Al Barile decided that hair metal was the way to go. Well, DYS and every other early 80's Boston hardcore band made the move as well. Making the arrival of Slapshot that much more welcome. I don't mind this [...]

Great news! just read the following on The Dirtbombs myspace page : "The Dirtbombs are in the midst of recording a new album, currently scheduled for a September release. Originally it was going to be a 5-song, 123 release but it's been so long since a complete LP of original material, Mick and the gang decided to go all out and make a full record. It should be completed by July but we'll keep you updated (if we feel like it). The album is tentatively titled We Have You Surrounded . And guess what [...]

I re-watched Spike Lee’s documentary When The Levees Broke on the weekend. If you haven’t seen the film yet I highly recommend it. Hopefully I’ll be catching the Departed and The Prestige later on in the week. In a rather nostalgic mood today, which explains a few of the “random song†choices. Random Song 1: The Dirtbombs - Do You See My Love (For You Growing) Random Song 2: Femi Kuti - Truth

The Gories... The Screws... Blacktop... The Dirtbombs. From the the dirty, dirty blues to the loud, loud garage punk there's no one in Detroit more prolific than the tall and bearded Mick Collins. Here are a few tracks from each of his bands (at least the ones that I am aware of... I'm not really an expert. That's why I do this here and not for AMG . Hell -- I just went to that page and didn't bother looking up Mick up to see what else he did. For shame...). There's [...]
