Austin rockers The Distant Seconds are keeping the punk sound alive in their hometown, drawing on three decades of pre- and post-punk influences to create a driving style all their own. Their 2009 release Spectral Evidence earned them many a critical accolade, and with a new LP in the works and a string of SXSW shows coming up, it's a wonder they had a second to give us this detailed downlow on the best spots in Austin. How we stumbled upon The Distant Seconds is probably not unlike how you've come across a band or two: we found them online. Matador Records chief Gerard Cosloy, an Austin resident, raved about them during an interview , leading us to make direct contact for a copy their freshly minted debut Spectral Evidence . Since their 2006 release of Dreams , the Berlin-based disco-twittlers of The Whitest Boy Alive have really touched the world. With 120 shows from Europe to Mexico and even Down Under, it isn't hard to see that the group and fans alike should have some added excitement with the March release of Rules . The Distant Seconds are releasing their new CD, Spectral Evidence, this Friday Jan. 9th at Trophy's alongside Fresh Millions, Dark Water Hymnal, and the Harlequins. The Distant Seconds sound like a new version of Spoon mixed with a touch of Wilco and a smidge of Dandy Warhols. Recorded in the spring and summer of '08 at The Echo Lab in Denton, the record has a musical continuity throughout relying heavily on major/minor chord vamping, steady drumming and Gary Numanesque keyboard sounds.
