top of the day! almost merry fucking christmas, peoples! frankenstrangler is pretty much the gentlemen from the district attorneys, along with a couple other athens folks. please dont ask me to name them, but i know they are solid folks. from what i gather, and i may be wrong, they play around athens under the frankenstrangler name from time to time. well they have a xmas ep that you can download for free which is made up of tunes from chuck berry, wham, beach boys and the best band on the planet, imo, centro-matic. consider this my little gift to [...]
this was tough cause this is probably the best year, as a whole, that i have heard in quite a few years. i know im missing a record or two, so there may be an addendum later on, but im pretty sure that this is how this should look. with that said, i know as soon as i hit "publish" somethings going to pop in my head. either way, my top ten will be coming in the next day or so. i think i am going to 5 one day, 5 the next. does it really matter? nope... In their own words. After "Slowburner" was released way back in April 2012, we toured for a bit, made some new friends, and twiddled our thumbs for a few months before deciding it was time to release some new tunes. "Jr." is comprised of four songs recorded in the fall over a few weekends at our house on Easy Street in Athens, Georgia. We love these songs and we hope you do too. The time spent recording has given us the confidence to get back in the studio and start work [...]
If there was one record that defined November on the local front for me, it was definitely the new Qurious LP, Void Vanishing —a gorgeously-crafted and mesmerizing slice of experimental electronic music that exceeded even my own lofty expectations. It's a beguiling record that deserves considerably more attention—both here and elsewhere—because it's quite simply a masterstroke of mood and celestial ambiance. Without question, it's among the year's best. Looking forward through December, there is no shortage of potential gems lurking. Just this week, there is a half dozen records ready to spring forth and [...]

I’ve listened to The District Attorneys debut full length, Slowburner , a bunch of times and it’s still a wild ride. There a bunch of different sounds from song to song yet The DAs still have a cohesive sound all their own. It’s a really cool record, essential listening , but that’s about all I’ve come up with to say about it. But then there’s this: I grew up in Athens GA and about the time I got a driver’s license I started reading the Flagpole and following local music. That was nearly twenty years ago [...]
The Atlanta-Athens corridor is a two-way musical train-track overload ed with talented cargo. Last month, The District Attorneys , a five-piece, hopped aboard with their full-length debut Slowburner . The DA's, like their new record, embody what makes my beloved South so great—they are simple yet sophisticated, soulful yet rough-hewn. With that subtle sentimentality a la Alex Chilton and Big Star, but with a little more Stones-esque rock 'n' roll get-up and a splash of Yim Yames' psychedelia, I think The District Attorneys are on their way to big things. But for now, Slowburner [...]
When he last checked in on them, The District Attorneys had just kicked out a great cover of Gillian Welch's Wrecking Ball. Now the band is back with their proper full length debut, Slowburner, and they appear to have been studying at the temple of My Morning Jacket. The lead single, "Confusion of Trust," has a 602s flavor to it, complete with swelling background vocals that will undoubtedly be a live favorite. Can I imagine a pack of drunken college kids singing whoa-oh-oh-oh along with the band? Yes, yes I can. They follow that up with "Worry [...]
from all the reports i had read re: sxsw, athens boys done good, the district attorneys , made a pretty big splash, or at least they made a nice little wave amongst the festivities attendants. rightfully so, their new record which was just released yesterday via this is american mausic, slowburner , is a record great listen, and can only imagine their live show to be something pretty damn awesome. the record, musically, is kinda hard to pin down. they kinda sound like a southern bred built [...]
After Coachella's horrendous Tupac hologram ( which now may lead to a faux-Tupac tour!? ) I started getting severely worried about the state of the music industry- and to be honest the state of music in general. Is this really where we are now? Has the ability to capture energy and emotion in unique and raw environment become a lost art? It's sad. But just as I started getting seriously bummed out about it (and trust me I did) a band like The District Attorneys come along. Their EP, Waiting On The Calm Down The Basement [...]
The Tonighters "Photograph" EP A while back I let you all sample the new band The Tonighters . Well, Billy Gilbert and his band got enough interest from this blog, so he decided to pass along a new EP. And yes it's also a FREE download from bandcamp. Seriously the band sounds better than ever - thanks! The District Attorneys "Basement Sessions" EP Here's another hidden gem, Drew Beskin and his band have been prepping a new album, [...]

The District Attorneys: Jr.
Free downloadable EP makes an excellent introduction to the band. The District Attorneys, responsible for one of this year's best records in Slowburner, close out the calendar with this free four-song EP. Not simply b-sides from that album, these songs were recorded in their own separate bash-out-a-track-a-day session as a run-up to recording Slowburner's follow-up. If you enjoyed Slowburner, Jr. holds more of the band's exuberant goodness. "King Is Boss" kicks in with a '50s-style intro that morphs into something more modern, right down to...

The District Attorneys – Slowburner
Young up and coming Georgia band The District Attorneys released their debut full-length of southern rock, Slowburner . Following their Orders From… EP and building upon their Waiting on the Calm Down EP (from which 4 tracks make their reappearance), the quintet shared songwriting duties, making Slowburner a collaborative collection of pop in a variety of styles. From hazy garage rock to surf rock, from Americana flourishes to splashes of doo wop-style harmonies, The District Attorneys manage to evoke the reverb laden sounds of summer as well as the [...]
The District Attorneys: Slowburner
Slowburner is a full-length that's never less than impressive and is unbelievably charming. The District Attorneys have been going strong for about three years now and they finally have something to show for it. Slowburner is as strong of a power pop-heavy debut I've heard in years. Coming off as somewhat of a less snotty the Henry Clay People works in their favor and over Slowburner's dozen tracks, all beautifully sequenced, they navigate their musical (and genre) transitions with the ease of seasoned veterans. They're always gripping and...

Modern Skirts – Bumper Car
GA-316, a.k.a. University Parkway, is a popular route for Georgia bands traveling between Atlanta and Athens. But thankfully, the Modern Skirts and the District Attorneys will swap out their well worn interstate for a trip north on I-95. Fresh off Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Artwork of the Year awards from esteemed local weekly Flagpole , the DAs will join the stage with fellow rockers Moderns Skirts at Rock 'n' Roll Hotel on Friday night to play songs from their new albums. To hear each group's unique take on gritty Southern pop-rock, [...]

The District Attorneys: Slowburner
The District Attorneys bring enthusiasm and an obvious love for great songs to their debut. About four or five songs into Slowburner, you realize that you've yet to hear a bad song. In fact, you've heard nothing but very good songs. What's more, in that short span, no two songs have really sounded the same. Despite Slowburner being the District Attorneys' full-length debut (two earlier EPs are available for free from Bandcamp, and a few of those tracks are tweaked for release here), there's no sense that the Atlanta-based band...
