This week's UK album chart was topped by the 92-year old Dame Vera Lynn and her album, We'll Meet Again - The Very Best Of . That makes her, per NME , "the oldest living artist ever to have a number one LP" (suck it, Dylan). Good for her. So . . . Maybe it's yankee ignorance, or maybe it's the fact that she's 60 years older than me, but . . . um, who the heck is Vera Lynn? I yield the floor to Wikipedia : [...]

It's been an extremely long week (so long, in fact, that it became two weeks), and I'm still feeling a little crabby because I came down with a cold last weekend in the midst of a heatwave in a house with no air conditioning. A few days later, I ended up with some extremely vomitous backpain (if this is me at 26, I may as well call it quits at 30). I'm also just feeling bogged down with work, so I'm going to do a cheer up mix. Frankly, I despise people who tell me to cheer up or smile [...]

The entrance to Long Kesh prison We only made it to one play at this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival and what a play it was. Chronicles of Long Kesh at the Assembly Hall told the story of the prison situated outside Belfast that was variously known as Long Kesh, the Maze and the H Blocks. The prison opened as HM Prison Maze in 1971 and housed thousands of paramilitary prisoners before its eventual closure in 2000. This two-hour play could have been heavy going for its midday audience, but it managed to blend a hearthy dose [...]
Scott Walker It's Raining Today : The reason I am posting this will become apparent in a day or two, but I want everyone to hear my favorite Scott Walker song, which was (pleasingly) released within weeks of my birth in 19... whatever . If you know the name or voice, you probably know Walker's hits, possibly without realizing you do. Two classics: The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore [...]

I realize I've missed yet another weekly mix last week; as usual, work has been hectic, and I had to go out of town for a work meeting - really out of town, meaning the rock-and-tree landscape of northwestern Ontario, not really my comfort zone. For this week's mix, I'm going to return to a theme I did last year: songs inspired by literature/books/authors. If you're interested in what I chose last time, or want to check before you point out that I missed some obvious song, click here . One of my favourites in this [...]

Well, here is Part II of what is going to turn out to be quite a long series. With this post, we have covered sixteen out of sixty albums picked by Mojo Magazine's Classic Collectors Edition titled Britpop, containing sixty Greatest 90's Britpop Albums. The sixteen albums I covered so far are pretty well known to most of us music fans. But, in the remaining forty-four, there are some surprises. And, I will have to admit, quite a few of those, I am not very familiar with at all. So, I hope that you will also [...]

So, good people of the internets, this Friday I am going to be getting mind-meltingly bladdered at my works night out from about lunch time today, so my comments might go downhill even more sharply than usual this afternoon. Fortunately, it won't be the teeth-grindingly awful teambuilding nonsense implied by that picture because basically my work are a bunch of total pissants. So it will be drunken mayhem, which will be far better. We even have two new people to torment, which will be splendid. Mwaah hah haaa! Actually, we'll probably all be far too drunk to give them a [...]

As I was listening to Car Talk yesterday (yes, I'm an old man and I listen to Car Talk), I realized that I have a very conflicted and storied history with cars. On the one hand, I hate them. Absolutely detest them. Every car I've ever owned has been a big pain in the ass (and the wallet). I don't enjoy fixing them, I don't enjoy working on them. In fact, I've been subject to violent car sickness ever since I was a wee lad (boats don't do much for me either, oh don't get me started on boats) so [...]

Sunday's Summer Song is the weekly feature where I post a sample mp3 about all things Summer. A few weeks ago the Duckward Lewis Method released a bunch of tunes all about Cricket and the Summer. I seen the performance in Tower a few weeks back and I was hugely impressed by the quality of all the songs played. The album is full of beautifully crafted pop tunes from start to finish. I love how Neil Hannon and Thomas Walsh look like they are having a great time making music they love about their passion for cricket! And it's paying [...]

In honour of my car throwing another fit and requiring another day at the garage, here are some motor-related gems... MP3: Prefab Sprout - Cars and Girls MP3: The Divine Comedy - Your Daddy's Car MP3: Citizen Band - Rust In My Car

Coming back from holidays is traditonally a bit more rough than I had realised. Apparently post-holiday blues is a common phenomenon, but this is the first time I've really experienced it before. I've been really fucking down this week for some reason - probably the hot weather outside and the realisation that I can only take another day and a half of holiday for the rest of the year. That's fucking annoying, that is. I have no damn idea where it's all gone, honestly. I've taken stray days here and there to go to London to speak to Sony, to [...]

In anticipation of the third all-out new wave cover record of Francophonic lounge champs Nouvelle Vague, our weaving electronic paths intertwined with founding member Olivier Libaux to discuss the contemporary significance of the cover version, urges to throw a bit of original songwriting into the copyright-cleansed mix and the odd guest spot… Dots: You've just pieced together your 3rd record. how difficult is it to decide on which cover versions make each final cut? Olivier Libaux: Putting together a Nouvelle Vague album is like selecting own songs [...]

After weeks of contemplation, I got my hair cut yesterday. I try to get it cut every three months or so, whether I need to or not. I didn't get too much cut off as I don't like to have it too short and I prefer to show off my curls. The barber told me that he was not as busy as he used to be as people were not getting their hair cut as often. However, I might have to go back sooner that I would like as he didn't take that much off. Here are some tunes for [...]

This is not so much the holiday podcast as the pre-holiday podcast because, for all we are away now, I recorded this on Thursday night before going away, as we prepared ourselves for the unspeakable burden of doing absolutely fuck all for two weeks. I am taking a pile of books and a pile of new music and we are going to do pretty much nothing at all. My parents used to do really adventurous travelling when we were young, but honestly I don't have the energy. I am so incredibly fucking exhausted from constant Toadery that actually, [...]
