Jeremy D. Larson does the best Michael McDonald impersonation that I've ever seen. It's low-toned, muffled, and sounds like a decade's old Trans-Am chugging around San Francisco's concrete slopes on a rainy day. The only person that comes even close is the McDonald himself in one of his über-ironic self parodies . Granted, anyone can channel McDonald's funky baritone, and it's an entertaining voice to dabble with, but Larson's is a cut above the rest ( ed. he's being very kind ) . For some reason, I think about this every time I hear The Doobie Brothers' [...]

The Grim Reaper took it relatively easy this month. The headline deaths were those of bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs and Robert B Sherman, who with his brother wrote Disney standards for films such as 101 Dalmations , The Jungle Book and Mary Poppins . The idea for Let's Go Fly A Kite, from Mary Poppins , apparently was inspired by the Sherman brothers' father, Al Sherman, who was a songwriter and hobby kitemaker. But perhaps the most interesting lifestory to reach its end in March was that of Australian musician and AIDS activist [...]

I haven't done a Copy Borrow Steal for ages. Inspired by Tim English' fine book Sounds Like Teen Spirit ( website and buy ), it really is a very occasional series: this is the fifth article in two and a half years. In this instalment we'll look at a Van Morrison hit that sounds a bit like a soul number from 1968/71; an early Elvis hit written almost a hundred years earlier; and a Led Zeppelin song that doesn't draw inspiration from some blues singer, but from the Doobie Brothers. * * [...]

In 2006, a handful of UK artists launched a monthly night of music at Notting Hill Arts Club in West London that they dubbed Communion , to help promote and cultivate a scene for up and coming independent artists. Those monthly showcases helped to launch the careers for the likes of Mumford & Sons, Laura Marling and Noah & The Whale, while expanding to hosting shows not only across the UK, but internationally as well, along with founding their own record label. Looking to further their presence in U.S., where they already have monthly residencies in Brooklyn and San [...]

I love watching great performances or well-made documentaries featuring my favorite artists from the comfort of my couch. In 2011 a number of fantastic music-related films came out and it was nearly impossible to pick the 10 best efforts, so for 20112s list of my favorite concert films of the year, I expanded the list to 15 and there were still a few fine efforts which didn't make the cut. So with that in mind, we continue our long-standing tradition of detailing my top music-related DVDs/Blu-Rays of the year... 15. [...]

There's something about classic sampling mixed with crunchy bass that just works so well. Today I've got a sick new glith / dubstep remix of The Doobie Brothers - Black Water. This track does a good job keeping the vibe of the original, but pumped full of glitched out bass. It's got a slower 100BPM speed, giving it a real funky sound, with some drops that make it hard not to move around. Turn the bass up, enjoy! I never heard the Doobie Brothers like this and I doubt you have either! Download: Doobie Brothers - Black Water (Love and Light Remix)
These Love and Light crunksters are bringing us more lazer/sonic/whatever kinda crunk onto this Doobie Brother's classic, "Black Water". Can't say I love it more than the original, but it sure is something to get twisted to. * Sounds like they're saying Obama at the start (instead of Mama) - I'm trippin, haha. Rory Gallagher - Notes from San Francisco When Rory Gallagher died from complications following a liver transplant in 1995 at only 47 years old, the music world lost one of its most influential and respected guitarists. Hendrix rated Gallagher as one of the best guitarists in the world and many others like Brian May, Eric Clapton, and The Edge cite him as an influence. This posthumous two CD release from the Irish guitarist archives features a studio album of previously unreleased material recorded in 1977 which finds Rory in fine form [...]

In this instalment we look at the lesser known originals for five hits from the 1970s. Regular readers with exceptionally good memories might have a déjà vu movement: two of the songs I've done before. But I was not satisfied with one, and recently was sent by a kind soul a crucial sound file for the other. * * * Johnny Bristol – Love Me For A Reason (1974).mp3 The Osmonds – Love Me For A Reason (1974).mp3 [...]
