I don't feel like repeating old words and I don't know if there are any new ones to add. Ray Manzarek of The Doors has died at 74 years old. You've seen it on Twitter and in the creaky testimonies and tributes fluttering all over the Internet like one final organ solo. Last January, I wrote a 5,000 word feature on The Doors and "LA Woman ." It's both a celebration and a defense of the band, specifically within the context of the 40th Anniversary of their best record, "L.A. Woman. "I said what I have to say about [...]
When I was 13, I walked into my father's office. It was a big, grey office above a warehouse in Alexandria, Sydney. He had a receptionist who decided I needed a musical education. She handed me a pile of CDs. Among the15 or so albums were The Velvet Underground and Nico, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Led Zeppelin I & II, Are You Experienced? and The Doors. I went home, kicked off my shoes, sat on my bed and looked through the pile of CDs. I put The Doors on first. My ears pricked up at those first swinging [...]

Looking back, it’s been common to equate the Doors with their vocalist and frontman Jim Morrison. Since Morrison's death, remaining members Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore have been dogged with the observation that runs along the lines of: “It just isn’t the Doors without Jim.” Sure, but the passing of Ray Manzarek on May 20, 2013, in Germany [...]

Ray met Jim Morrison at UCLA Film school [...]

Like pretty much everyone else in the music world, Flavorwire was saddened to hear of the death of Doors keyboard player and co-founder Ray Manzarek yesterday. Manzarek was one of music's great versatile talents — his keyboard work on The Doors' recordings is rightly lauded, especially as the band's lack of a bassist meant he was often covering bass parts and melody lines simultaneously, but it's hardly the sum of his career. In the four decades since Jim Morrison's death, Manzarek was involved with a fascinating variety of projects; in tribute to him, here is some of his most notable [...]
Honor the late keyboardist's memory by listening to Ministry, Nevermore, The Atlas Moth, and Prong WITH Mazarek cover The Doors.

Fittingly, The Whisky, the Roxy and The Viper Room dimmed their lights last night for 10 minutes in Ray Manzarek's honor. A touching tribute on the Sunset Strip. Photo courtesy of Carlo Asciutti & Daisy.
Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away yesterday afternoon from bile duct cancer. He was 74 . The quasi-Baroque introduction Mr. Manzarek brought to the Doors’ 1967 single “Light My Fire“ — a song primarily written by Mr. Krieger — helped make it a million-seller. Along with classical music, Mr. Manzarek also drew on jazz, R&B, cabaret and ragtime. His main instrument was the Vox Continental electric organ, which he claimed to have chosen, Mr. Vitorino said, because it was “easy to carry.” The Doors’ four-man lineup did [...]

Each weekday at 5pm sharp, one NH7 writer or staffer will bring you five songs he/she is listening to on the day. Vishad Sharma wants you to hear him out today. Ray Manzarek was possibly one of the most innovative musicians to come out of the psychedelic '60s. It was his unique skill on the keyboard that shaped much of the sound that The Doors created. From providing a strong bass section to the [...]

The Doors rock tarihinin en önemli figürlerinden biri olarak, müzik tarihinde kendine özgü bir sayfa açmıştır. Grup dönemi itibariyle bir neslin acılarına, isyanlarına, kaygılarına tercüman olmuştur. Elbette The Doors demek Jim Morrison demekti. Grubun diğer üyeleri, The Doors’un kısa süren ömründe Kertenkele Kral’ın gölgesinde kalmaktan bir türlü kurtulamamışlardır.

Photo and autograph courtesy of the G Archives. Ray Manzarek I can't believe I am saying these words: Ray Manzarek, keyboardist for The Doors has died at age 74. As you know, The Doors are one of my all time favorites and not a day goes by without me listening to at least one Doors song. I had the occasion to meet Ray Manzarek several times and I always found him to be very nice towards fans. For those experiences as well as being one fourth [...]

Founding member of the Doors Ray Manzarek passed away today at Rosenheim, Germany due to complications of bile duct cancer. Damn. I just heard my all-time favorite song by The Doors the other day on my local classic rock station, and was just thinking about how I need to introduce my piano-playing daughter to their timeless rock, especially as it pertains to keyboardist Ray Manzarek 's contributions. Jim Morrison of course received the bulk of the glory, but Manzarek was a big reason why The Doors were such a unique band from 1965 to 1973, and one of the leaders of the psychedelic era. They eschewed a traditional bass guitarist, relying on Manzarek's talents on the organ [...]

Jim was the heart and soul of The Doors but Ray was the musical backbone........RIP Ray.
