If you have $50 that is. Because if you have a spare fifty in your wallet, you can attend the 930 club's Rock The Vote and Ck One Inauguration Party! Who is going to be playing at this party you ask? Well, we have Talib Kweli, Michael Franti, The Dresden Dolls, The Honey Brothers, Jamie Burke, and (get this) others they can't even talk about yet! Oh joy! I can't even begin to fathom who that would be. An estimated 3 million or so people are [...]
Christianity had Paul. The United States had Federalist papers. Indie rock has Neutral Milk Hotel. What do they all have in common? They did not invent the game but they all wrote the rules. ...
As Amanda Palmer recently blogged , all of her videos have been pulled from YouTube due to a dispute between YouTube and Warner (who owns Amanda's label Roadrunner). Palmer has re-uploaded said videos to Vimeo . I especially recommend the chilling "Strength Through Music Video" (which I originally posted in August ) and the controversial "Leeds United" (which I originally posted in November and again in December ). I had originally hoped to start the new year here with another "Best beats" post similar to last year's , but as I went to work on the year-end summary, the list format just wasn't working for me.. I was fortunate enough to engage with art of so many different varieties in the past year, that a bulleted list just didn't seem to do it justice. Here's my attempt at encapsulating a banner year of artistic appreciation chronologically-ish. Jens Lekman owns. (Photo from Myspace) When I began [...]
Yesterday we brought you our list of Best Debut Albums of 2008, so today we thought we'd follow it up with our list of Best Non-Debut Albums of 2008, in no particular order. If you think we left something out, let us know what in the comments section! Or if you just want to add any thoughts on the albums we posted. Oh, but take note - there are still some lists yet to come (so much good music! We
Love (<) Dresden Dolls - No, Virginia A B-sides collection that is nothing to be snubbed at. I've always felt a little guilty liking the Dresden Dolls, because, in the end, their existence is 1/2 great music, 1/2 gimmick. To some extent, I don't like that they do what they do in the way they do (gimmick), but it would be wrong for me to say that I don't respect their ability to play out the characters they do. The main reason they're a [...]

The Dresden Dolls were one of my favorite bands while in high school and early college. Needless to say I was super stoked by Amanda's recent solo release, Who Killed Amanda Palmer? (a rock-art/cabaret piece much in the same vein as the Dolls). This week, while attempting to plan my SXSW experience in '09, I stumbled across her personal blog . Filled with video interviews and Amanda's own thoughts on everything from the recent Youtube/Warner scandal to the weather in New England, it really gives you a glimpse into her life as well as her tour. Don't [...]

...you're doing it right! Seriously. I haven't posted nearly enough of Amanda or Brian, but they're amazing. I haven't gotten through the entire album, but I like the dark, zany stuff I've heard so far. Blake Says by Amanda Palmer
"Contemporary UK Feminism" blog The F-Word is reporting that Roadrunner Records have dumped singer Amanda Palmer (of Dresden Dolls fame) "Because she refused to let them remove shots of her "fat" belly from the video for "Leeds United" (see above), and is therefore 'uncommercial'." I call "bullshit journalism." While it would certainly be tempting for a hard-line [...]
I have enough a synth pop and electronica on my iPod that the term "real music" has been rendered virtually meaningless to me but that's just what it was. read more

Combining old-timey music with modern weirdness is nothing absolutely groundbreaking ... but I wouldn't tell that to Ryan Sollee for fear I'd end up at the bottom of Couch Lake. Sollee fronts Portland's The Builders and the Butchers , a band that makes its living playing murder ballads with the intensity of a Southern Baptist preacher whose soul has been swallowed by Beelzebub. And by all accounts, it's an absolute blast live. Sollee moved to Portland from Anchorage, Alaska in 2003 and began writing songs that more resembled funeral dirges than the post-punk songs he [...]

May 20, 2008: Dresden Dolls release No, Virginia , the sequel to last year's splendid Yes, Virginia. Basically a collection of tracks rescued from the Yes, Virginia 's cutting-room floor, No, Virgina is worthy of some consideration. (A Radiohead's Amnesiac to Kid A analogy my be helpful.) Tracks like "Dear Jenny," and " Night Reconnaissance ," and the duo's cover of "Pretty in Pink" highlight the album. September 16, 2008: Dresden Dolls's lead singer and pianist releases her first solo album, [...]
In case you missed my original post about Amanda Palmer's Leeds United belly battle with her record label, she has posted an update to her own Blog . She talks about The Rebellyon website some fans have made to support her, the frustrating details of her contract with Roadrunner Records, and the bizarre way the label seems to have forgotten what kind of artist she is despite the fact they released all of the Dresden Dolls albums. Amanda Palmer - Leeds United (YouTube Video) [...]

While strolling down Newbury Street over the past few months, I've always remained subconsciously aware of the promotional signs splayed across the Newbury Comics windowpanes, celebrating the release of Dresden Dolls ' member, Amanda Palmer 's solo debut, Who Killed Amanda Palmer? . Aware, though uninvolved. Now I'm wishing that I hopped on board when I first saw it coming. While I start educating myself properly about the release, I can share what I do know. As part of an ongoing series surrounding the release, Amanda Palmer has been releasing music videos [...]
Former Dresden Dolls singer Amanda Palmer has posted a new YouTube video for "Leeds United", one of the stand out tracks on her debut solo effort Who Killed Amanda Palmer? . Amanda's lastest newsletter said that Roadrunner Records wanted her to re-cut the video so that shots of her belly wouldn't be included, because they thought she looked too fat?! She's slim! And even if she wasn't, they should know by now that not only is Palmer a non-conformist when it comes to image, but that a big part of why we fans love her is because she is [...]

I haven't wrapped my head around all this yet, but there's something compelling about cabaret-anarcho-punk. I mean, if or when The World Inferno Friendship Society (a.k.a. The World, The Inferno, or World Inferno) ever comes to Chicago, I'm there! How could you NOT want to see a band whose style merges punk , klezmer , and gospel , while its collective membership features horns , piano , guitar, a [...]

Today, I am proud to be an American, proud to be black, proud to be the child of an immigrant and proud to be the sibling of a Harvard Law graduate. (That's a long bumper sticker, isn't it?) Other than that, I'm speechless. But I'm not songless. I've been obsessing over "Shores of California" by the Dresden Dolls for the past few days. Mainly, because I've been wondering about the way it is in Minnesota, Oklahoma, etc. Unfortunately, for the titular area of the world, they have lost the right to marry whoever they [...]

Everybody's favorite keyboardist/accordion player Franz Nicolay has announced details of his first solo album. The Hold Steady's multi-instrumentalist will be releasing Major General on January 13th. The 13-track album will include many guest appearances including Brian Viglione of The Dresden Dolls. You can hear a sampling here . Franz Nicolay is currently on tour as part of The Hold Steady. The band will be pulling into The Phoenix in Toronto on November 11th along with Drive-By Truckers. [...]
