The Duckworth Lewis Method Are Back!!

Thomas Walsh (Duckworth) and Neil Hannon (Lewis) are delighted to announce the forthcoming release of Sticky Wickets , the follow up to their acclaimed Ivor Novello nominated 2009 debut. Duckworth said: Quote: “Lewis and myself felt it would be at least 20 years [...]

Robbery! Muggery! Aussie skullduggery!

Robbery! Muggery! Aussie skullduggery! The Aussies were seriously lacking in skullduggery at the Adelaide Test last weekend. But that didn't stop us from having a good time at the Adelaide Oval. Even if it did seem to involve a full day of watching England's mercenary South African batsman Kevin Pietersen spend the whole day smacking Australian bowlers around the pitch. Oh, wait, that was exactly what it involved... I know that most of my readers aren't cricket fans but I choose to believe that this is due to ignorance rather than indifference*. [...]

State / IMRO Culture Night in photos

State / IMRO Culture Night in photos State was delighted to be asked to take part in IMRO's special Culture Night event and so last night we took to the stage at their Copyright House headquarters for three live interview sessions. Joining us were Fight Like Apes (who received a special disc from IMRO head Keith Johnson in recognition of sales of their second album), James Vincent McMorrow and finally Thomas Walsh from Pugwash / Duckworth Lewis Method. It was a fine evening, rounded off by Thomas' rousing acoustic version of 'The Age Of Revolution'. Not only was Julian Clancy on hand to record the event for [...]

Interview with Duckworth Lewis Method

Neil Hannon and Thomas Walsh are eight hours into one of those intense, ‘get it out of the way’ media days that artists must dread. Their mannerisms, unsurprisingly, are a touch worn, with Hannon occasionally pausing to eye his coffee cup or mentally navigate the pattern on the nearby couch. If we didn’t know better, we’d say the duo are a touch bored. It’s not an impression that lasts: like their quirky band, the poetic twosome seems incapable of taking life too seriously. As State soon discovers, a single question can lead the pair on a journey of pure tangent-strewn [...]

The Divine Comedy – Bang Goes The Knighthood

The Divine Comedy – Bang Goes The Knighthood Since departing from his previous record company ‘by mutual consent’, Neil Hannon has not stood idle. Last years The Duckworth Lewis Method received much critical acclaim, his collaboration with Thomas Walsh possibly the only concept album yet to be released about cricket. Its seems to have reignited his muse, particularly for a more idiosyncratic form of song-writing, where rather than singing about the old staples of love and romance he prefers instead to sing of matters most people would regard as trivial and unworthy of note. His tongue is very much embedded in his cheek, as evidenced in [...]

Live: Duckworth Lewis Method at the Olympia Theatre

Great news Neil Lennon fans. As well as getting a new Divine Comedy album this year (and the gigs to support it), the Duckworth Lewis Method have announced a headline gig for the Olympia Theatre in Dublin on July 28th. It's sure to be a great gig, and they might even have some non-album stuff to play. Perhaps even 'Ireland, Ireland', especially on the back of our great ODI result against Australia. Tickets are €23 and go on sale this Wednesday. Watch 'Mister Miandad':

From a Chamber Box to the Circus Ring

..is really not that far. But it’s far from what’s mainstream these days. Pop, rock, hip hop, folk and now also new wave are genres that dominate the charts right now. But some of the artists in this article are artists that most likely will be more exposed than they already are in the near [...]

Live Review: The Divine Comedy

Live Review: The Divine Comedy Despite being a band that essentially consists of one man, Neil Hannon has never actually toured solo before, or at least not since hitting the big time. Normally he’s seen on stage backed with anywhere up to 35 players.  But - for his latest tour Hannon has unexpectedly gone back to basics; it’s just him, his piano and his guitar. Hannon often comes across quite uneasy at the beginnings of concerts, taking a few songs to really get into the swing of things, but despite the added pressure of performing solo, he seems completely at ease at London’s [...]

Live Review: Choice Music Prize 2009

Choice Music Awards 3-3-10
Last night saw some excellent live performances from many of the nominees for the Choice Music Prize 2009 (don't worry, you are looking at the ceremony held in 2010, it's just for the best Irish album of 2009), but by far the best were Dark Room Notes and And So I Watch You From Afar. Both bands are on their debut albums, so who knows what the future may hold awards-wise. CODES opened the night strongly, before Julie Feeney toned it down a notch. Feeney had been the darkhorse when nominees were announced, but crept up to become [...]

Adrian Crowley claims Choice Music Prize

Adrian Crowley is the winner of this year's Choice Music Prize. A panel of 12 music media professionals chose Crowley's Season of the Sparks as 2009's Irish album of the year ahead of last night's presentation at Vicar St., which also saw performances from eight of the 10 nominees. As his reward, Crowley receives €10,000 - provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation and Irish Recorded Music Association - and a specially-comissioned award presented by Recorded Artists and Performers Ltd.
