Where once we levelled bombast at the innumerable scruffily-coiffured boys playing scuzzy post-Strokes Fenders in the wake of Pete Doherty's drug-fuelled derailment into the neighbouring wilderness of irrelevance, there's an inescapable sense of foreboding that the hordes of female voices currently clogging up the airwaves and wireless internet particles that we respire are doomed to a comparable fate. Aesthetically, Sparrow & the Workshop are yet another collective blurring backgrounds and genders, as well as forcing malleable acoustic instruments into the tones of a visceral raucousness and a further female-fronted forest-dwelling outfit may initially seem rather superfluous. [...]

Memphis-born Alex Chilton, one of rock music's most influential musicians, has died aged 59 in New Orleans from a suspected heart attack. Chilton (pictured standing) first tasted success as the 16-year-old frontman of The Box Tops and their wonderful hit from 1967, The Letter. He then went on to form Big Star with Chris Bell, [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , Canada Toronto's the Coast have been gaining rave reviews since they released their 'Take a Walk Outside' EP -- under their old band name July 26th Movement -- back in 2004. Since then, the group has released their debut album, been remixed by Toronto indie-rock brethren Tokyo Police Club and been acclaimed by local critics. Having just completed work [...]

"Mayday Revisited" is a one-off single from Swedish music producer Mojib (Staffan Ulmert). The track reconstructs the song " Mayday " released in 2007 by UNKLE featuring The Duke Spirit . Using the vocals of Liela Moss the track is being mashed together with lo-fi indie act The Radio dept. Mojib then adds his own piano and acapella melodies. The result is a unique fusion of alternative indie, rock and electronica. "Mayday Revisited" will be distributed for free on February 23rd, but you can preview it below. enjoY! [...]

This here is [clapclapclap] Akiko Hijichi - a person I know nothing about but whose works I dearly love. (see how craftily I've avoided specifying gender there? If anyone here speaks Japanese or is familiar with Japanese names please let me know if that's a masculine or feminine one, please. Thanks. This is embarrassing.) * Hot from my inbox: Mojib - May [...]

Got this in my email and when I saw Unkle and The Radio Dept. Couldn't help notice what kind of single this will be. If you are fans of Unkle (New album "Where did the night fall" drops on May 2010) The Radio Dept (New album "Clinging To A Scheme" drops on March 2010 [ Click here for album review ]) The Duke Spirit You will like this mash-up by Swedish producer Mojib (Staffan Ulmert). As we've watched others post their top 10's of the decade, we've been a bit flummoxed. Other than the obvious Radiohead choice, we seem to disagree with the cool kids once again. We believe that faithful readers of this site will find our picks logical and a perfect fit for their own taste. There's no politics in these picks, no succumbing to the arm-twisting of certain labels who are trying to grow the future of their brand.... I mean band. If you write great melodies and believe that emotion IS music, then you're likely to find [...]
I always have time for another festival, especially an indoor festival at the soon to be dear departed Knitting Factory, so I was psyched for Longhair Illuminati on Sunday. There were over 15 bands in the three KF rooms, including a few of my favorites, so I figured I was good for four or five [...]

If Grace Slick had stayed sober, she would have sung for The Duke Spirit . Although the British-based outfit has been on the scene for at least a couple of years, the group is just now finally starting to get the attention it deserves. Maybe its the band's Dandy Warhols -influenced arrangements? Or maybe its the fact The Duke Spirit has scored the opening gig [...]

The 88 have begun work on the follow-up to its third album "Not Only ... But Also," which helped get them picked up by Island Records last year. There are few finer purveyors of power-pop around, and the L.A. quartet this month is doing something of a return to its roots — a Tuesday night residency at Spaceland, starting tonight with Daniel Brummel and the French Semester on the bill. They promise old songs, new song and some surprises. You never know with these guys; currently on their MySpace page, there's a song they recorded [...]
Had to chuckle when I received the blast about the Duke Spirit's "new" single, "Lassoo." I think I had that track (which first appeared on the U.K. band's "Ex-Voto" EP) on my Best-of-2007 mixes. The rivulets that carry music toward the mainstream run slowly sometimes. I've seen the band perform "Lassoo" live at least four times, but never with horns. Good stuff. Two albums in — 2006's "Cuts Across the Land" and last year's "Neptune" — the Duke Spirit is as good as British rock gets for me these days. The band is winding up its [...]
With so many bands (over 200 at last count) ready to diverge on San Francisco for the second annual Outside Lands Festival this weekend, we thought it'd be helpful to provide some playlists so you know what to look forward to. Below are samples of all bands playing on Friday. We'll roll out new playlists tomorrow and Friday, so tune back in to hear those bands as well. MP3s Pearl Jam - "Given to Fly" Incubus - "I Wish You Were Here" Thievery Corporation [...]
