A quiet week around here for many reasons, The new Asa & With Joyful Lips record is as close to comfortable, with strings and snapping low maintenance dubby drums, as we're going to get. For the rest ( go here ). Fingerbanger 1 : Asa, With Joyful Lips - Forgotten (don lowed) -- You might just want to pack this one up in your picnic basket and wait for warmer days. Unless you hate cute, sparse, indy music... then you might want to just move along. [...]

Over the course of three surprise-filled albums, Wye Oak has artistically come of age in the public eye. Singer/guitarist Jenn Wasner and drummer/keyboardist Andy Stack mesh spellbinding folk-rock melodies with a dynamic range that shifts, in the blink of an eye, from the parlor to the garage. The Baltimore duo, whose latest album Civilian (Merge) [...]

it is cold and gray and dead and rainy...but you know, it still sparkles depending on yer outlook. this month i decided to focus my mix on a few bands from the pacific northwest, a few having recently played or coming to play seattle next month, a few songs from my past that all this new awesome music reminds me of, and one song that just plain reminds me of how boring it is to be depressed all the time. enough with killin' that vibe; take yer vitamin d dammit , and enjoy the music! gorgeous [...]

Try to visualize yourself getting the piss beaten out of you as you stumble home from a night of getting plastered at the bar. The sudden shivers that leave you paralyzed as the fear of that first punch making its way to your face seeps into your bloodstream. One punch turns to five and you want to wail in desperation hoping someone comes to your rescue. No one comes. Resigned to your fate, you take the beatdown like a man in hopes that the assailants take pity on you and leave you be with your wallet and the money inside, [...]

Songs named after emotional states can be pretty dicey, and it's a rare track that can shoulder the weight. It's especially tough when the emotion is actually a knotted set of feelings. According to some quick research, saudade is a Portugese word referring to a longing for something that was loved and is now lost, not only a deep desire to have it back, but also a belief that one day it will actually happen. Refusing to let the thing or person go means that the ghost is always present. And the constant failure of [...]

So the xx has won the Mercury Prize. They had been the favourites at William Hill until loads of people bet on Wellah and the bookies all cacked themselves. Maybe they should have stuck with the original odds. There is a point to this beyond the gratuitous mention of the Mercury Prize (hello Google spiders!). All this talk about the xx reminded me of their post-punk roots - one friend has amusingly dubbed them They Might Be Young Marble Giants - but I think they're in a bit more debt to Durutti Column. This track is actually 90s-era [...]

God: Vini Reilly, by the way, is way overdue a revival. You might think about a greatest hits. Tony Wilson: It's a good idea. God: It's good music to chill out to. Tony Wilson: Yeah, you're right. God: I usually am. ~ 24 Hour Party People Regarding today's post; I don't know if you know who Vini Reilly is. Maybe you do or maybe you don't (but don't know that you do), but [...]

What the fuccck is a Round-Up? AN Definition: Round Up [ round ] [ uhp ] (n.) - Is my way of trying to keep with life and music at the same time for the next little while . For a more detailed explanation: Overwhelmed with school I'm forced to do round-ups for the next month or so. I don't have the time to individually wrap up some of these artists below... or those in the coming weeks for that matter. For that I apologize [...]

Photo by Guillaume Lechat ...is you! The Durutti Column: 'My Country' [Monarchy Remix] [ mp3 ]
Neon Gold 's SynthPop card up their sleeve, Monarchy , have dropped this wonderfully dark edit of Manchester Post-Punk legends The Durutti Column 's 'My Country'. The original is clearly recognisable here, but what is done works so well. The addition of the beat, strings and a sprinkling of synth work all combine to pull the song into the 21st century whilst loosing none of the atmosphere that made the original what it was. ♫ The Durutti Column - My Country (Monarchy reMix) (zShare) (MediaFire) [...]

Μια και πιάσαμε τα παλιά. Τώρα πίσω πίσω Durutti Column ; Ακούω το homage του Vini Reilly στον Toni Wilson της Factory Records "A Paean to Wilson" και το βρίσκω εξαιρετικό.

The Durutti Column's latest record serves as a tribute to the late, great Tony Wilson, co-founder of Factory Records and major beacon of support for the band over the years. As the story goes, The Durutti Column were the first band signed to Factory in 1978, and Wilson provided the band with management and guidance throughout their career. As the title implies, this album is a massive undertaking, clocking in at 18 tracks, many of which exceed the seven-minute mark. The album begins with a looped sample of producer Martin Hannett (Joy Division, Happy Mondays, Magazine) asking, "Is this [...]

I fucking hate mondays. I hate them so much that I'd rather not participate in them at all, but this morning was cool cause while I was driving with one hand/tweeting/facebooking/smok ing in shitty traffic, I came across the following news: Manchester post-punk act The Durutti Column will release and perform A Paean to Wilson - a tribute to Factory Records co-founder and Hacienda nightclub manager Tony Wilson - in January next year. Source: Durutti Column to release and perform tribute to Factory Records co-founder - Fact Magazine Truthfully, [...]
When Tony Wilson first signed the Manchester-based Durutti Column , the pair began a fruitful and influential journey through the early 1980s underground. In a fitting display of gratitude and devotion, the band have reunited to record an instrumental tribute album to their old friend and mentor, who died in 2007. The new album, A Paean to Wilson , stems from an instrumental written just before Wilson's death. Durutti founder Vini Reilly composed the piece for Wilson to listen to while in the hospital, just before his death. Wilson loved the piece, [...]

It has been announced today that The Durutti Column , of which the creatively erratic Vini Reilly is a founding member, are to release a commemorative album to mark the death of Factory Records co-founder and manager of the Hacienda nightclub, Tony Wilson. The release, A Paean To Wilson , was originally written by Vini Reilly as a personal collection for Wilson to listen to while he was seriously ill in hospital in 2007, shortly before his death. The tape, in its present form was commissioned by the Manchester International [...]
