As I strolled down Pacific around lunch time today, I found myself in a strange state of aural disorientation. See, I was waiting for trio Yells At Eels to show up at the West End DART station, w... Continue reading "Scenes From Yells At Eels' Afternoon Flash Mob" >
I got into Lostprophets' heavy first album cuz from its opening seconds, I was transported back to my high school buds' old living room where snowboard and skate videos played on a steady loop. LP just had that vibe, like the random, slightly out-of-tune bands that soundtracked videos of Danny Way calmly vaulting the goddamn [...]

The last Friday of 2011. And so begins a slow walk to the end of another year. Ambushed by Christmas (my own fault, of course: same date every year, nothing to be scared of), tending sick animals and children, reigning in the oldies while fighting the desire to sleep spontaneously with bouts of manic activity that appeared to achieve very little, I am reminded that the best things in life are three. When I was a (lot) younger, and Martin O'Neill was no more than a twinkle in my footballing eye, and I still got a [...]

2011 was the first year that I wasn't fully involved with OnlineRock , a company/website/label that I started back in 1999. I was looking forward to not being tethered to the website and having some freedom to explore other creative endeavors. At first I didn't think that much had happened in 2011 but looking back on it, it seemed to be a pretty eventful. From house concerts and traveling to books and recording, 2011 was one of the better years. Here are some of my highlights. Live Music: One thing [...]
Christmas Is Going To The Dogs by The Eels I don't know if I have any Eels fans out there but I'm a pretty big fan... especially the "Eels with strings: Live At Town Hall" album. Once again this is a hard to track down song so I'll go ahead and give ya a free [...]

BAM! Bet you were expecting a Best of 2011 list, yeah? Well I don't got time for that (YET)! No...this is where I acknowledge all the great stuff I missed in 2010. 'Cause it doesn't get any more rock n roll than to talk about shit that's over a year old. Write that down in your How to Be Rock N Roll notebooks. Anyway, the last time I wrote this list , I spent quite a while talking about how there isn't enough time in one year to listen to all the potentially great releases and put [...]

[Not everyone loves Christmas songs but I, for one, can't get enough of them. Every year it seems we get the same old perennial hits, and I guess that's part of the charm - Christmas is a time for comforting familiarity after all - but most of these aren't as fulfilling as one might hope, musically speaking. Never fear, however, as this Yuletide help is at hand, in the form of Eaten by Monsters' selection of the best alternative Christmas songs out there.] This is a genuine Christmas favourite [...]

Today is Hedley Day on Coffee. All the songs are for him. He suggested I play those songs we all sing a long to in our cars at the tops of our voices (except for the last one: that one is my choice as I know he is an Eels fan.)
Eels on Heels: Blank Skin Thanks to Strange Fires for this one. That wonderful blog has seemingly developed an unhealthy obsession with the intense, abrasive songs of Eels on Heels and I can't help thinking I might be heading the same way. Each momentary burst of sound and energy on ' Blank Skin ' leaves a distinct mark; relentless percussion only adding to the severity and the sheer force of the entire experience. Very HEALTH -like, in so many ways. But there should [...]

"I mean, look at me— I'm an actor. An actor, for crying out loud. You know how much rejection I face every day? But in this business of show, you have to have the heart of an angel and the hide... of an elephant." Words of wisdom from the perennial actor / never-nude, Tobias Funke. Yes, not everyone's cut out to be a a DeNiro, or a Regis, or a Pinkett-Smith, but there are a select few actors & actresses that have reached the pantheon of greatness, which is, of course, being memorialized in song. Such [...]

Well, the first week of classes came and went with happy vibes and happy music, despite the weather last weekend. I've been staying at a dear friend's place for the past week since I'm moving into my new apartment today. Needless to say, we've been having dance parties every morning as we get ready for our days. This week has been beautiful not only because we had the chance to see everyone at school again after a tan and warm summer, but because we've started each and every day (or close to every day) with a really happy playlist. I [...]

[Happy birthday today to Sir Mix-a-Lot, who gave the world "Baby Got Back" ...] Tonight's show list is not lacking for quality or quantity: ► It's the end of a long summer of touring for Mark Oliver Everett and Eels — who played to thousands in Glastonbury, rocked Beijing, saw a concert scotched in Shanghai (their equipment didn't show up) and joined Ringo Starr onstage in Norway for "With a Little Help From My Friends." Eels wind up their travels behind their 2009-10 album [...]
