Filed under: Video of the Day Artist: Sharks Video: "Arcane Effigies" Highlight: "The video was shot by our good friend Ryan Mackfall around our hometown," vocalist/guitarist James Matock tells Spinner. "No one has ever heard of Leamington Spa so we thought we'd shed it a little light. The guys in the video have their own band too called Rewards and Revenge, and remind me of when we first started out. They were stoked to be a part of it, but really it [...]

"The early '80s witnessed the meteoric rise and fall of countless hardcore bands in America. The emergence of a teeming youth whose primary reason for living was utter frustration and ultimately rebellion against the status quo triggered rock music's last real explosion. Only the most persistent bands with more than a spark of talent and [...]
Things I learned this weekend: Apparently it's grounds for an ass-kicking when you're black-out drunk at a bar and you tell a girl her boyfriend is "limp dicked" and ask her if you can "put a little baby in your tum tum." Good thing I was in a large group of people who would have [...]
These Friday rock clips are feeling pretty fucking anachronistic lately, with everyone and their mothers painting their moods on Facebook with new and used video clips. That being said, I'm a creature of habit and occasional comfort, so I give in to the end of week urge. Hope you still like it. Today I'm throwing out two underground favorites from the early/mid 1980s. The first is from an old Chicago fave The Effigies , who released their classic debut EP Haunted Town" (with Chicago's flag on it) in 1981. (It also apparently looks as if [...]
Effigies and Epitaphs by Petrychor The American black metal band Petrychor dropped its debut album, Effigies And Epitaphs , on Khrysanthoney this month, and it's got some some of the strongest guitar playing I've heard on an album of this style this year. Well, that is if I can pinpoint the style. Most of the time, I think it's safe to say Petrychor plays a variation of black metal, but they pad a lot of their tunes out with acoustic interludes that embrace a classical and even flamenco style. [...]
Never heard of Urge Overkill? Do not be so quick to reply, "Yes." Remember in Quentin Tarantino's classic, Pulp Fiction , where Uma Thurman is singing Neil Diamond's, "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon?" Well, you have Urge Overkill to thank for that. Their cover of the song accompanies Thurman during her iconic overdosing scene. Having taken a long break since then (their last full-length was 19952s Exit the Dragon) , the group has returned with Rock & Roll Submarine, an album that is a nostalgic nod to the alternative rock sounds of the '90s. [...]
Below the drop - Effigies Is You Weren't There still streaming online somewhere? That was a good document, and i would not have had such impetus to check out the Effigies and other Chicago bands (Rights Of The Accused, Da, Savage Beliefs, Negative Element) if i had not seen it. The Effigies were one of the bands that seemed to please Steve Albini, so take that as you will. More things should be made that focus on regionality [...]
(photo by Jeff Millies) Chicago alternative rock outfit Urge Overkill are releasing a new record after about fifteen years of relative inactivity. The band have been unfortunately stuck in the bargain bins of music shops and only really having the calling card of covering Neil Diamond's "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon" in "Pulp Fiction" [...]

ummm... i could not be more fucking excited about this! i actually may be more excited for this than the release of majesty shredding. you may or may not know but i am a huge urge overkill fan, and this is their first song in more than 15 years. ok, if the song sucked, i would have been not as excited, but this is all kinds of badass. apparently spin got the exclusive earlier today, but who over 20 reads still reads spin? you can read all about the urge goings ons over at spin . [...]
Pitchfork surprises me with a blast from my past! For one week only, Pitchfork is showing the Chicago punk documentary movie You Weren't There - The History of Chicago Punk (1977-1984) about the early days of the late 70s/early 80s Chicago punk scene. Great to see all these names and faces from my semi-wild youth from the Chicago punk and hardcore scene , including The Subverts, Articles of Faith, Naked Raygun, Wax Trax Records, The Effigies, Steve Albini and others. From the DVD site: [...]

Converge is returning to Tempe on May 19th at The Clubhouse and the Factory Made office is eagerly anticipating their return with a line-up that only Converge could lead. With a lifespan that rivals most bands in the genre Converge has yet to reach their peak as they recently released "Axe to Fall" last year reaching critical acclaim while creating, in my opinion, their best work yet. There are few bands that can tour with Converge and not look completely outmatched; the bill for this tour however seems like a perfect [...]
Righteous, old school Chicago punk band still cranks out razor-sharp songs

This is some new Bird from the upcoming Noble Beast , out January 20. I love Andrew Bird because he seems to be unconcerned with what's cool, and that inadvertently makes him the coolest! He plays the violin, he whistles like the Bird he is, he writes almost overly intelligent lyrics, and he creates some really beautiful music. This will most likely be the last post I'll do from Noble Beast , because I don't want to spoil it. Check it out. Andrew Bird - Effigy [...]
"This show's not about wallowing. This show's about soaring. Like an eagle." -- Tom, taking flight high above the union man "Was that thing wreckin' Newark? Or Jersey City? Hoboken? No. No, we were sendin' the jets out to attack that thing. That was us. We're the good guys in this one." -- Tom, praising New Jersey's role in defending NYC against the Cloverfield monster "Exactly. They got their chops over in uh ... in uh ... you know [...]

If you think my social interactions are steeped in awkwardness, you should have seen me at that posh mall boutique trying to find a pair of glasses today. Not only was I completely disinterested in the entire process, I think I was being downright rude to the nerdy, balling fellow who clearly struggles to earn commissions. Well, I dropped some fat cash on a pair of glasses, so I hope he enjoys his fancy dinner this evening. I've never felt more pigeonholed than when he asked me, "What do you do for a living?" I responded by stating [...]

Considered one of the first Chicago punk bands, the Effigies formed in 1980, well after punk had already come and gone in places like NYC and London. Post-punk was already going full-steam ahead with many groups adapting a more technical, synth-laden style than the sped up R&B of punk’s heyday. However, groups like the Bad Brains and Minor Threat took more of a hardcore approach with their music, similar to bands such as the Misfits and Dead Kennedys, and were soon seen as the second-generation of punk adding a new sophistication to the music. The Effigies [...]
