The Electric Soft Parade live at The Haunt, Brighton (4 Feb '12) // Words: Simon Opie There's something in the now customary live event of playing a classic album in its entirety. I've seen a few such gigs and they've always been good. But I can honestly say that this was a gig I'll never forget. It was essentially to celebrate [...]

British Sea Power, by Kenny McMurtrie By Kenny McMurtrie October 30, 2011 Rarely do you see a merchandise stall featuring a memoir of the headline act and the family of a couple of its members but, if you're to come across that anywhere, then a British Sea Power show is probably one of the less surprising places to encounter the like. Alongside the more run of the mill CDs and t-shirts, Ray Wilkinson's (ex-manager, brother of Yan & Hamilton) work Do It For Your Mum [...]
Pure Festival is a celebration of whiskey and wellies....

Seven Staropramens had seared an untimely hole in my wallet on a balmy October evening. Earlier that night, I'd felt for the first time the heart-pumping euphoria where live music and alcohol criss-cross and interlock on the shores of intoxication island. I was meant to be back within the hour to help out with the party. It was for charity. Charity had been hurled out the window though, I needed more. I needed something. I needed. A kebab. [...]
Oh come on – you must remember the excellent psych-rock band The Electric Soft Parade and their quality debut album 'Holes In The Wall', released on DB in 2002. If not, go and pick it ...

Previewing second solo album, The Maximalist, Thomas White returns with his familiar style of pop-with-a-snarl. There's a fine art to making music that's subtly aggressive, and the White brothers have always managed to carry it off quite well, the early charm of Electric Soft Parade and more recently as members of Brakes being particularly good examples. The Last Blast, "a dissection of the life and work of notorious World War II novelist Sven Hassel" (an interesting story by the way), is as suitably manic as its title and [...]

Compiling a list of this magnitude is a daunting task, so we're going to start with a disclaimer. This is "our" favorite albums of the decade and we make no claims that this is the defining, music snob list that you should bow before as you read it. While we shunned the concept initially, we've been disappointed to see a lot of our favorite albums being ignored by the likes of Pitchfork and others. Obviously, there will some overlap (how many Radiohead albums does your list have?), but in general we think this list gives you a [...]

Jeremy from Fingertips joins us each month as he scours the betterPropaganda archives, highlighting gems buried a few years back in our database. This week we bring you "If That's the Case, Then I Don't Know" from The Electric Soft Parade . At once squonky and lithe, "If That's the Case, Then I Don't Know" features anthemic chords and resounding beats, scuffed up fetchingly with fuzzy guitars and electronic blips and boops. Add Alex White's nicely vulnerable, Brit-poppy vocals and the whole manages to trump the sum of its parts--quite an accomplishment, [...]
I witnessed two of Band of Skulls' approximately 1,000 shows (OK, they played five, I think) in L.A. in the past week, and it was hard to not to get a little bit excited. The U.K. trio's no-frills but high-skills take on blues-rock is simply a lot catchier than some of their contemporaries doing the same type of music. Imagine Wolfmother or the Black Keys with pop songs (and boy-girl vocals). A friend likened them to the 22-20s (ah, Coachella 2003), an astute jog of my memory. This is the video for "I Know What I Am" (which, [...]
Friday 15th March. I'd probably just had my tea and was pissing the hours away on Championship Manager like any self-respecting skint 16-year old. I popped downstairs to have a glance at Top of the Pops and the performance above struck a chord. The small talk on the radio line set something off. Dashed upstairs and downloaded the album off some kind of P2P software in about half an hour. Probably played more Championship Manager. I feel guilty about not buying the Mercury nominated Holes in the Wall . Though since this transgression, I've seen The Electric [...]

Electric Soft Parade - Jealousy [The Pet Shop Boys]

image from here Well, it has been awhile that is for sure. Almost forgot how to run this thing.... Don't want to clutter this space with my personal crap but suffice it to say I am lucky to be alive. Suicide attempts are not pleasant things to talk about. Unfortunately, I am still suffering from severe depression, among other things and struggle to make it through each day. Well, enough about that already. This is supposed to be about the music. And I must admit I am on a [...]

Here at Quarterlifeparty, we get the occasional (try about 20+ a day) email promoting a band. Sometimes we write a post on each band...but lately it's been a bit overwhelming so in an effort to clean things up a bit and still be able to talk about the stuff we've been diggin', here it is in one post: the bands that survived the dreaded gmail archive button. No easy feat. I'll try to keep it short and sweet. Ezra Furman & The Harpoons - We Should Fight (MP3) We [...]

As usual well past due, here's the latest (and not-so-latest) from the Licorice Pizza mailbox. There's a pretty good selection of stuff here; something for everyone's palate, I think. My personal pick of the litter is the tune from Brooklyn's TK Webb & the Visions, "Teen is Still Shaking." This is a spacey metal song with Dylan-esque vocals. My vote for weirdest song is Lexicon's hip-hop take on the Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated." And winning the honor for "Singer I'd Most Like to Leave Everything For" is Kirsten Price. Like always, follow the [...]
This caught my eye as soon as I saw it in my inbox--"Thomas White of The Electric Soft Parade." You probably don't remember, but the song I chose from the last contrast podcast CD swap was "Empty at the End" by The Electric Soft Parade , so this music instantly interested me, even before I heard it! The music is kind of weird and experimental (he cites The Dandy Warhols and Spiritualized among his influences) and it's certainly not [...]

Did you dance in the 80's? Do you still dance the 80's? We do. We were hit by Buffetlibre guys about the Rewind project and I almost forgot to tell here. Now we have more reasons to wear strange clothes, you know... just kidding. We're normal. Anyway, Buffetlibre is a Spanish website dedicated to the promotion of pop and electronic music in legal mp3 format. Cool! They have an awesome website, with lots of DJ's and information. And this REWIND is amazing. All 60 tracks are available for download. It's a non-commercial tribute [...]
