If I was gay Would I be less of a person Less of a man, father Less than human? If I was gay Would you treat me like garbage Call me inhuman Think I'm an abomination? If I was gay Would I not be capable of love Not able to pray Be one with the Lord? If I was gay Could I not help the poor Work with children in schools Coach sports at a public field? If I was [...]

It wasn't the best moment from the debate last night, but it has become the one that will probably live on in infamy. Mostly because Romney's " binders full of women " moment was a quasi-lie that can easily be refuted. What actually happened was that in 2002 - prior to the election, not even knowing yet whether it would be a Republican or Democratic administration - a bipartisan group of women in Massachusetts formed MassGAP to address the problem of few women in senior leadership positions in state [...]

Photo still: Hotel Chevalier Wes Anderson's long withstanding obsession with mellow, baroque pop and british invasion bands is fascinating to me. I keep uncovering my new, old favorite song every time I see one of his movies. I even have a playlist dedicated to his films, filled with songs and artists I discovered thanks to him and a few more songs that I think would fit in his next hypothetical movie. I've no idea what his next movie will be about but I've been thinking that his mostly muted, awkward characters would develop grandly in [...]

EQUALIZED, 2011 // 123 / BUY: VINYL The fifth twelve in René Pawlowitz 's (a.k.a. Shed, Wax, etc.) 'anonymous' Equalized series doesn't disappoint. Pressed on hand-stamped black vinyl and housed in generic white inner sleeve the #005 offers two uncompromising techno transmissions that have Shed written all over it. The A side cut packs some heavy industrial-edged beats, whilst the B side is a big room banger of epic proportions that needs to be heard on a big system in order to be fully appreciated. I heard it for the [...]
Remember the first time you heard Tortoise's TNT ? How could anybody forget their aural initiation to those languid guitars, tripping over those paradoxically lush and frenetic rhythms? Think of all the doe-eyed teenagers who formed post-rock bands, hoping to somehow create something that even remotely emulated what they just heard. Enter Equals . Despite their undeniable musical talents, technical proficiency, and knack for writing wholly listenable instrumental post-rock, Texas' Equals are just one among a sizable herd. They're also a little late to the party. Their self-titled EP conveniently [...]
Putting together these monthly mixes has become one of my favorite things to do on Pretty Goes with Pretty. It's not like putting together a typical mix, which usually has some unifying theme. No, these are mixes made with strict rules: all the songs were downloaded within the last month all are new to me, and it should go without saying that I think they're all great the mix is intended to be listened to straight through and should be a satisfying experience (The fourth, til-now-unspoken rule is that each [...]

L-R: Lincoln Gordon, Pat Lloyd, Derv Gordon, John Hall & Eddy Grant Thanks to the king of southwest Georgia and This Is American Music big queso, Corey Flegel, for inspiring today's post. We were chatting a few days ago about the new Glossary album, Long Live All Of Us , and he made reference to The Equals , of whom I was sadly ignorant. I soon discovered they were a '60s/'70s English band led by Eddy Grant , later of "Electric Avenue" fame. In fact, [...]

[ DOWNLOAD ] The Texas-based band, Equals , hasn’t always been the technical and tightly-arranged instrumental band it is now. The band’s large soundscapes, searing guitar riffs and blitzing rhythms were products of evolution. The members of Equals–bassist Alex Guzman; drummer Matt Toman; keyboardist Logan Wexler; and guitarists Simon McDonald and Dylan Storey–met in high school and college and [...]

I feel like this band means business. The way they play, the way they conduct themselves, and even the scary disclaimer at the bottom of their email shows that Equals is here to stay. Their style is extremely technical, especially the drummer (I don't know if you're reading this, but woah) and their energy is off the charts, comparable to And So I Watch You From Afar. They get groovy at times like Gifts From Enola ("Electric Blanket"), feature clicking gallops like Maps & Atlases ("False Light"), but then take a completely different turn into something all their own ("Salvo"). [...]
Texas-based experimental instrumentalists Equals are putting out their self-titled debut EP August 30 th 2011 via Manateam Records . The densely layered songs all have their distinctive storyboard of moods and textures, each one a lovely surprise yet all five somehow melding together to form a cohesive, cinematic whole. Band members Alex Guzman (bass) Matt Toman (drums) Logan Wexler (keyboards) and guitarists Simon McDonald and Dylan Storey weave a sonic palette that’s expansive and infinite yet snugly arranged with a deft technical precision. Their first single First Light [...]

Singer Miley Cyrus is a huge supporter of equal rights , and has spoken out against discrimination with regards to the Gay community. Good for her! Her most recent show of support, comes in the form of a brand new tattoo that she got to show her support of Gay marriage. Cyrus has publicly tweeted her disgust with companies like Urban Outfitters for supporting anti-gay propaganda, such as their donations to Rick Santorum 's campaign to run for President in [...]

Texas, especially in the summer time, seems to breed bands that just want to get down and play together, fully unleashing whatever sounds come to their fingers. Such is the case with up-and-comers, Equals , one of the newest in the Texas field of post-rock. While the beginning and end definitely rely upon the quieter side of the musical stream, you'll find that there's some chaos swirling in the middle for you, giving you precisely that level of noise many need in their instrumental rock. The group is releasing their debut self-titled EP on August [...]
