Quick disclaimer : Fellow writers have been pondering their end of the year posts since January 2, 2007...at least that is how it seems. I've never been able to compile a list of favorites...not for music, movies, books or really anything. I embrace it all, support it and encourage it...yeah I'm a shmuck, I know, but I can't raise one above the other. So you won't be getting a list of my favorite artists, albums or songs from 2007. Moving on. My husband is a self-proclaimed geek and so I hope he doesn't mind [...]

ok ok ok, so, you are not what you own, but saving a few bucks here and there is still a hella rad thing, especially when that savings is to a whips show. That's why were're stoked like a fire to be able to offer up to you a pair of tickets to Wednesday night's show by The Evens at Notsuoh . Not heard of The Evens ? It's a duo with Ian MacKaye (Graustark) and Amy Farina (The(e) Freed). Ok actually they cut their teeth in the bands Fugazi [...]

As Saturday evening draws near, it's safe to say we're getting fairly psyched (okay, giddy) about this. It's not every day that a legend and one of the most influential independent artists ever comes to Dallas to play an intimate show at a small art gallery . You guys know and love Fugazi , but if you're unfamiliar with Ian MacKaye 's (and Amy Farina 's) current project the Evens , now's a great time to get acquainted: mp3: The Evens Shelter Two (from [...]

To quote my friend Rick , "The best band ever." Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina made this wonderful lo-fi pop (in punk rock style, of course), and frankly, we at 3hive have never featured a Dischord band until now. It was time to right this wrong. www.dischord.com

This place is crazy. There might be no truly worthwhile shows for a week and then suddenly there are three awesome shows scheduled on the same night. Ordinarily, I'd love to see The Street Dogs again. On any other day, I'd shell out the cash to witness Morrissey onstage instead of heading out to see a local act. However, when that act is The Evens featuring the legendary Ian MacKaye , that pretty much trumps anything else on the agenda, as far as I'm concerned. Furthermore, because I [...]

Black Bettie Genre: Alternative Noise From: Liverpool (The Devil's home), United Kingdom A brand spanking new band on the Devil's blog, a band so fresh they're still shrink wrapped. Black Bettie are Lula Blue of Dirtblonde and Nisha ex of Horror Horror who play sensual , experimental garage rock drawing on influences from The Evens [...]

Anyone who knows me should know, by now, my utter infatuation & respect for the inimitable Ian MacKaye. Whether we are discussing the prospects of a ( holy shit, that would be bad-ass ) Fugazi reunion, his genre-defining early work with Minor Threat, his current political (wait, how did he get nominated to help investigate the Kent State shootings again?) or musical projects, or just how well the dude has aged, in my eyes, it would be hard for Ian do anything wrong. The guy is untouchable . That is, unless you get [...]

Song: Deadhead Artist: The Teen Idles Album: Minor Disturbance Comments: Jeff Nelson and Ian Mackaye's pre Minor Threat album. Pure punk if nothing else Song: I Don't Want Hear It Artist: Minor Threat Album: First Demo Tape Comments: The guitar on this song is amazing. I remember this song from my teen years when Minor Threat was a distant memory (3 whole years). Now twenty four years later I still remember the line, "First your telling stories, Now your Telling lies, [...]
Yes, I know everyone is in a post-St. Patrick's Day stupor. A notable trend in today's Washington Post: Glorious, unhindered, & truthful Bush-administration bashing. Not that this is unusual, there just happened to be an exceptionally high concentration of featured editorials and articles on the theme today. Bush ...(in the Post) = King Lear ? Nice. fails in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict & his administration's odd relationship with statistics and Condoleezza didn't really mean [...]

Sasha: The Evens are Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina. I picked up their first album this week and was blown away by how much I liked it, the sound is pretty mellow compared with some of MacKaye's earlier work with Minor Threat and Fugazi, it's sparse but with catchy hooks. No worries though, this album sounds nothing like selling out- just listen to the lyrics of the song below and it's obvious MacKaye hasn't calmed down as he's gotten older. For an interesting explanation of the new [...]

A few weeks ago a friend of mine introduced me to The Evens. It's the latest from Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) and Amy Farina (The Warmers). He knows I'm a huge Minor Threat fan so he thought I might dig it. After I heard the album I thought it was pretty good but way more Fugazi then Minor Threat. It was pretty mellow but still had a definite punk rock vibe to it. last night that same

Washington, DC Ian McKaye is quite the legend in the DC area and in the hardcore scene. For his latest project he collaborates with Amy Farina. The Evens just released their second album through MacKaye's label, Dishord Records , and I like it even more than their first. "Pushed Against The Wall" The Evens on MySpace

After my recent post on Soccer Team , I decided to keep it in the Dischord family and post briefly on the new album by The Evens . As most know by now, The Evens are Amy Farina (formerly of The Warmers ) and Ian Mackaye (formerly of Minor Threat , Embrace , hopefully not formerly of Fugazi ). The band continues to take on the [...]

Photo by The Evens For the last six years, every time I've read the news or discussed current events, I've vacillated between anger, depression, outrage, resignation and total powerlessness. I knew from the outset that Bush would be bad for this country, but I had no idea how virulently bad. I knew having Republicans in control of all three branches of governments would set us back, but I couldn't foresee quite the extent of the damage. Whether it's been committed internationally, socially, environmentally, economically, militarily—just to name a few—it'll take [...]
