On first listen I thought for sure The Ex-Girlfriends Club was from New York City or somewhere in Australia but it turns I was way off. Portland, OR is really far from both locations but this band has studied the records of scuzzy punk of Richard Hell and Cosmic Psychos as well as originators like The Stooges, The Sonics, etc. Their album Boo Hoo Hoo was released this year but if you told me it was some lost garage punk album from 25 years ago I would have believed that, too. This is some raw garagey shit. Guitars [...]

Many are naturally baffled as to how everything costing more could be anything confused with an improvement. "No One Gets Lost" from Elika "When I'm In A Car" from Ed Schrader's Music Beat "The Witch" (Sonics) covered by The Ex-Girlfriends Club [...]
We seem to be getting overwhelmed by high quality videos at the moment so it would be churlish and not a little selfish of us not to share some of the best with you. Kicking off is the wonderful video for the delicately beautiful Tuck The Darkness In from the Bowerbirds new album The Clearing . a Next we have Cheyenne Marie Mize and a video for her adventurous track Wishing Well from [...]

Most of the new releases for this week dropped on the last day of last month, making January a pretty rad month for new releases after a relatively slow start (which is typical right after the holidays), and a great way to kick-off the 2012 music calendar. In case you missed any of IRC's Best [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Here are the best of our January posts together with a few tasty new tracks. All in all nearly forty great tunes compiled and neatly presented in one lovely mix. Remember when Merge Records was synonymous with genre-defining indie rock and had a whole roster of bands whose albums you couldn't wait to get your hands on? Well, guess what? They still are, and do! The venerable Durham, North Carolina, label proves they're still up to their game with two releases this week in heavy rotation at KEXP. Bay Area veterans Imperial Teen return with their fifth album overall and their third on Merge, Feel the Sound , which, according to our Music Director, Don Yates, "continues to refine and expand upon their infectious blend of power-pop, [...]

Great to read that Portland garage-punk glam rockers The Ex-Girlfriends Club have a new release coming out next week. The LP is called ' Boo Hoo Hoo ' and it's available from 1/31 at all the digital outlets. Guitarist Orion of the Apocalypse wrote recently to say: "'Boo Hoo Hoo' is for fans of Pissed Jeans, The Murder City Devils, Queens of the Stone Age and older bands like The Dead Boys or The Stooges. We worked with Timothy Stollenwerk (Thee Oh Sees, Wooden Shjips) from Stereophonic on this record and we're really excited about [...]

Hot on the heels of the sleazy, grimy punk blues of the Jim Jones Revue which we posted a couple of days ago comes the er well, sleazy, grimy punk blues of The Ex-Girlfriends Club. Although these Portland, Oregon boys have a touch more glam rock about them than our UK version. We posted something from these guys last year which went down well on MM, and their new single Hurt Me is out now. It comes from their self-titled EP and is well worth a spin. Enjoy! Visit [...]

Another Monday, another mixed bag of tunes we've been listening to as of late. Hailing from the UK, Vessels are currently in town recording with local studio ace John Congleton, who also recorded the band's White Fields and Open Devices . Immediately upon listening it's easy to see why they and Congleton are such a good match, they have that angular visceral eruption thing that he so enjoys down pat. In the mixed bag we have an Errors remix from their debut album. This morning we received the lead track from Miniature [...]

This seriously has to be one of the largest mailbox dumps I've ever done. Sixteen songs – and that's after I deleted a good number I didn't want to post. What's funny is I started off thinking this was going to be an unusually small post because I had to go through about 20 e-mails before I ran across something I liked and wanted to post. Like always, I was happy see big names like the Dead Weather and MIA reaching out to bloggers to help promote their respective albums. I've seen both of these tracks posted [...]
Here's a quick look at stuff I was too lazy/busy to properly deal with this week: The Ex-Girlfriends Club, "Your Prescription" With the release of their new single, the Portland, OR band gives us one of the most glorious doses of dark, reverb-drenched music that we've heard in quite some time. Someone call the Reid brothers! The Ex-Girlfriends Club's Myspace Art of Chaos: "Hide and Seek" Los
