New Build , the collaborative project started by Hot Chip's Al Doyle and Felix Martin, with engineer Tom Hopkins, released their first single, " Finding Reasons " featuring Planningtorock's Janine Rostron, back in September. This record is almost ridiculous in its high velocity soul attack; dare I say proto-soul-punk? Since their debut (hit) release "Tell Him", the mixed gender Exciters released a string of superb singles that were some of the finest pop-soul of the 60's. Interestingly enough, this record was reissued by RCA in 1972, making me wonder why. Was it getting play in the New York club scene, for instance, that necessitated a reissue? Perhaps an A&R person felt that it had hit potential and deserved another shot? The record certainly caught on with the northern soul crowd, but it's unlikely [...]

As some of you may or may not know, I've been having a lot of fun with a new feature on the Fun Machine; a segment called "Peer Pressure." Stop me if you've heard this before: Sony PS3 just offered an awesome program that will set it apart from its competition. The only problem is it just costs too much. When the Playstation 3 first dropped, it was light years ahead of the competition, but a $499 price tag was too steep for most gamers that opted to buy another console, hurting Sony's sales until it had to eventually lower its price. The X frontwoman has returned with another addition to her catalogue of breezy folk albums, which sound a lot like the stuff that punk rock was supposed to hate. (There's no need to.) On the back cover and insert of The Excitement of Maybe, Exene Cervenka poses next to a tree, acoustic guitar in hand. Her dignified openness in these pictures couldn't help but remind me of another late-career album with a very similar pose in its packaging: Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose, the album which helped "bring back" that country star to a wider (or at least "hipper") [...]
