Just the other morning I was thinking about the Double LP compilation Burning Ambitions: A History of Punk because I realized I left off the song "1,2, X U" from the Wire posting this week which seemed like an obvious track to gab about anyway being that even the likes of Dag Nasty had covered it. This 1984 comp is where I first heard of a lot of UK punk bands who seemed old or passe in my youth at the time like the Adverts, X Ray Spex, UK Subz, etc, etc but [...]

Here's another one to watch for 2011, his latest single 'Falling' has been a great success, getting plays on 'Annie Mac's Mash Up' and host of other shows. It's also been remixed by the likes of The 2 Bears! This free download, 'Slowly', is a soulful mellow track with harmonious lyrics and a percussion filled backing track. It gonna be one for summer and it's a lovely one to chill to. Slowly - Best Westbeech [...]

And while we're on the subject of writers, why not spare some time for the existentialist charms of French Algerian author Albert Camus? Mark E. Smith named his legendary band after one of his books ( La Chute ), the Cure based their early classic Killing An Arab on his debut novel L'Étranger , while Magnapop mourned his tragic end in their Michael Stipe-produced Favorite Writer . "In Corsica the engines blew, your favorite writer died... in a car, in a crash, died in a fire, imagine that..." After the crash, which took place somewhere in [...]

For those of you who follow my Womp Womp Wednesday posts on a regular basis (and I love each and every one of you who does) you'd know that Bassnectar is far and away one of my favorite producers. The thing a lot of people don't understand is how intelligent and intuitive you have to be to be as strong of a producer as he is: he knows how to work a crowd, he knows how to get people going, and, most importantly, he knows when to drop the womp. Here are three of my favorite Bassnectar tracks. [...]

Not the most exciting of weeks for alternative releases ever, but still a few well worth a trip to your local record store for. Week starting February 28: Dum Dum Girls – He Gets Me High EP ( Sub-Pop ) Dum Dum Girls - He Gets Me High Lykke Li – Wounded Rhymes ( Atlantic ) Rainbow Arabia – Boys and Diamonds ( Kompakt [...]

Two Tears is a new solo project from the rad Kerry Davis. Davis, who you may remember from the pivotal 90's L.A. punk band Red Aunt recently traveled the world, particularly Paris, Dubai and New York City. In result came three fresh songs apart of a 73 release that dropped this past Tuesday via Kind Turkey . This track tagged "Heisse Hexe" happened to be my favorite of the few - although they're all rather glorious - mostly thanks to its post-punk variations, that will leave any Fall fan quite satisfied, and silky smooth vocals. By the time the [...]
There are more great tracks by The Fall than you can shake a stick at, even if it a very large stick and you are very good at shaking it. Here is one such, recorded back in 1981 and featured on various compilation albums since. Fantastic Life originally appeared as the b-side of Lie Dream of a Casino Soul . Lyrically it is not Mark E Smith's finest moment - it seems to be about bullshitters and braggards - but the music is something else entirely. The spiky, fractured guitar of Craig Scanlon [...]

Taken from their 1983 album ' Perverted by Language ', this track is characterised by the flowing guitar of Brix (Mrs Mark E.) Smith. While most of the album follows more conventional songwriting this track seems quite content to bubble away on a synth/bassline with Brix dissolving the middle into a melee of guitar. How do you know you're going to die? Look down at your feet and see if you're walkin' funny. Or is he saying "final?" Walking funny or walking final probably have something in common: handclaps. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCPH3d PQkIc These guys have bro'd up before, on "The Fall," another song about dying. Guys, lighten up! Though you're good at this. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkP5iu 738ss The Avett [...]
