As if I am an expert (in anything), let me quote myself: "Music, in itself, is an amazingly mysterious being (to me, anyway). Even when it seems simple it certainly is not. It is not unlike our familial lineage..." I do not quoth myself to float thine own boat. I do not retell the above without a point. I live with a fixation on family: not just in the normal sense people assume when they hear that word, 'family', either. It's not about my mother and father or my child, though those connections are strong but instead I [...]

Another indie band announcing tour dates with a gap during the weekend of Coachella . The all-female four-piece Warpaint has announced plans for a Spring outing set to kick off on March 16th in San Francisco. Supporting last year's CoS Top Star named- The Foo l , the band will then make their way up the Pacific Northwest and into Canada before hitting cities across the U.S. Midwest. The end of March sees dates in Toronto and Quebec, as well as the major East Coast stops, and then Warpaint will play Nashville, New Orleans, and [...]
Warpaint made my Thursday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. With apt openers Family Band and Rewards, the house was sold out and sweatily excited for Warpaint to blow our minds. Family Band is a girl-fronted post-rock band based in NYC. They performed with fine energy and there was something distinctly beautiful mixed in [...]

Last week i watched a film that had been recommended to me by my friend Chris. You may have heard of it, i hadn't. It's a black comedy starring Robin Williams called "The Worlds Greatest Dad". And when i say black comedy i mean very black. It has moments of almost heartbreaking bleakness but most scenes are almost always complimented with a sense of humour that are enough to lighten up the dark side of the story. It deals with a lot of issues, some quite taboo, with a comedic element yet still manages to get it's point across every [...]
Last night I was accidentally seeing MTV's European Music Awards on cable TV and U2 played at the site of the famous Berlin Wall and I was thinking hey, this is really really rock music. Also, doing music at this huge rock 'n roll party were the bands Foo Fighters & Tokio Hotel and everything [...]

Listen to this sad and delicate song by Family Band if you're in an introspective mood. It's lovely. Family Band- Marie (Jack Nitzsche Cover)

There is something to be said for "mood music". Sometimes you just need it. I often need it. One band that has moved into the town of atmosphere and set up shop on ambient-aura street with their dog psychedelia firmly planted on their porch is Family Band. The song is a cover of Jack Nitzsche track "Marie" and is as sombre as it is beautiful. Family band also have a new album on the eMusic Selects label (released the same day as the Strand of Oaks album...so it was kind of like having your birthday and winning the [...]
Yikes! Summer is passing by faster than a swift kick from Crystal Castles' Alice Glass . A few more weeks and the kids will be off to school, Slip 'N Slides will be rolled up and tossed in the garage, and neighborhood pools across the country will close shop 'til next year. But it isn't over yet! There's still time to do all those fun activities you said you'd do when summer came along, but never got around to doing (I've been meaning to build a raft and float down the Chicago River for the past 5 summers). As [...]
The year is looking up with a new album and tour from Robert Randolph. Robert Randolph and the Family Band - Concert - Robert Randolph - Music - Arts and Entertainment
Family band finally had their amazing album Miller Path mastered and released on vinyl. The new cello is perfect and the songs sound pretty incredible (see for yourself down below). The album is limited to 500 so go order one right now before they're gone. Also, Stereo Gum premiered their new video last week and you can watch it above. Family Band - Children (Final Version)
[mp3] Family Band: "Diamonds" We've been having a love affair with the new record Miller Path from Family Band . While not the perfect spring soundtrack, given its downcast nature and snowy moods, the album is no less compelling. The highlight is clearly to rich vocal performance from singer __ whose voice falls somewhere between the timbre Sharon Van Etten and the melodic nature of Nina Nastasia. Above is their new video for "Children" debuted yesterday on Stereogum. Family Band play tonight at Union Pool in NY.

[mp3] Sonya Cotton: "Red River" Some of the most interesting music we've come across in the past few days has come (of course) from some of our favorite music blogs. Vince hates these double posts, but deal with it buddy. Thanks to Some Velvet Blog and Aquarium Drunkard for the below. First, we have the delicate and gorgeous folk stylings of San Francisco's Sonya Cotton . Finding solace in simple and pleasing traditional sounding melodies, Cotton weaves her way through most songs [...]
Sometime last Fall, when the leaves were barely hanging on to the branches of the trees back East, my old friend Jeff Thrope (who now helms the excellent blog Cold Splinters out of Brooklyn) hipped me to Family Band's Miller Path LP using brevity: he simply stated I needed this music in my life. Indeed. [...]

I've missed Jonny Ollsin for some time now. First it was the demise of Vancouver metal band S.T.R.E.E.T.S. with whom he played guitar that triggered that sadness, and then some time later, it returned when his band Children broke up. Luckily Jonny has been recording and playing music with his wife/vocalist Kim Krans for a while now. Their music as Family Band is a much turned down sound from those earlier days and has been described as "heavy mellow". And indeed while it is much quieter, you can hear Jonny's intricate metal riffs making their way back into [...]

All too often in this age of indie collectives, you get bombarded with songs steeped in layers so thick the melody and intricacies are lost, along with any spontaneity. The desire for epic sounds leads overproduction and a polish that takes away the heart of the songs or a muddled combination that makes it impossible to feel your way through. Thankfully, when it comes to The Geese - a folk collective from New Brunswick that recently moved to Vancouver and changed their name from The Family Band - the songs on their EP [...]
