Have you ever thought about how long you want to live? I've been doing the math lately and even if I live a really long life, I'm definitely more than half-way through. It's kind of depressing. And of course, I mean living and being healthy, not just existing in a rheumy, semi-ambulatory state blankly staring out the windows of the nursing home, unable to meaningfully participate in life. See, as I was on my hands and knees cleaning the baseboards the other day [...]

[Folks, today is 07/08/09, and maybe a numerologist could explain it to me, but I remember have a distinctly crappy 06/07/08 and 05/06/07. So I might not get out of bed today, even to wish Beck a happy 39th birthday.] The acclaimed Brooklyn avant-pop group Dirty Projectors hit town tonight behind their new release "Bitte Orca," which has an eccentric beauty to go along with its rather stubborn penchant for outsmarting itself. The sextet visits the Troubadour, supported by What's Up [Download: "Harper" ]. ... [...]

I am running out of steam, people. I am pooped. I don't even have the energy to write a coherent post let alone keep up with all the crap I'm supposed to be doing. I feel like I haven't found a rhythm to my days since I've been working so much and it's throwing me off. I'm still adjusting to the extra hours and I'm really feeling it. Maybe once school is out I'll be able to fit in a little more rest/blog/housework time. Until then, I'm afraid I'm just going to have [...]
Sophomore release Out Of The Rain, the Thunder and the Lightning begins with a pleasant interlude before launching into "The Sun Goes West," by far my favorite track on the record. It's a guitar-driven number reminiscent of '60s bubblegum pop. Out Of The Rain plays like a sonic incubator, with each track hatching into its own happy little something-or-other. The eclectic nature of the record is tied together with guitars, fabulous harmonies, and some of the best pop lyrics I've heard in ages.
Where's Ip? I am such a baaaaad man. *baps himself with rolled up newspaper* Seriously though, I've been in a bit of transition with life recently, looking for new job being the main catalyst to that. Fret not, I shall be re-employed soon enough! However, in between the job hunting, I've still been finding all sorts of yummy new tuneage! So, enjoy! Nick dePartee - Working Hands (Sleeping Pills) (2009, Brentwood, Tennessee) I've been in kind of a "laid back/ambient" music mood at times lately. Nick dePartee's latest [...]

Here's a couple of photos from last week's Seasons show at Echo Curio. Here's some photos from Faraway Places' Record Release party at the Echo last Wednesday. I really liked the Faraway Places. They were very California, and had this sort of Beach Boy's feel to them in the structure and beachy/sunny quality to the songs. They backed that up with some really well placed light 60s-era-style psych riffs and small jams. It was pretty awesome. [...]

Not a wide variety of releases this week, but there are usually a few gems to be had if you're willing to dig around. A few worth checking out include Casper & the Cookies Modern Silence , Cause Co-Motion! and their 12-inch EP Because Because Because , The Wooden Birds' Magnolia , and Hanne Hukkelberg's Blood from a Stone . As always, feel free to recommend anything we may have missed! [...]

The Faraway Places , "Out of the Rain, the Thunder & the Lightning" ( Save It , May 12) — Power pop and summer seem to go together like Dodgers dogs and the crack of the bat ... or cool drinks and shade trees ... or like the boy-girl vocals delivered by Chris Colthart and Donna Coppola on this L.A. ensemble's well-timed release. If the choruses don't catch you — and they probably will — the iced-blended synth lines and day-after-a-razor guitars might. The Faraway Places' sun-struck take on life's little puzzlements shimmers somewhere between the Rentals [...]

Operation Aloha sounds like the Hawaii travel bureau's latest promotion, but it's actually a supergroup of sorts, including members of Maroon 5, Gomez and Phantom Planet. During a 30-day hiatus on Maui, the band — all 14 of them — made an album of chill, occasionally island-flavored pop music, and tonight they bring that music to the Troubadour ( the Parson Red Heads open). ... The Meat Puppets' return — and it sounds triumphant to me — play the Mint behind their new release "Sewn Together." ... One-woman wonder Theresa Andersson plays [...]
And now, Episode 680 of the continuing story of "An Introvert Goes Public." Typalyzer says my blog is the work of an ESFP. Half of that ain't me, though. I'm an INFP and I'll cower defiantly before anyone who says otherwise. But, ahem, such nattering's not why we're here. Here's why we're here, and darned excited to be so:Okkervil River - Pop Lie mp3 - from Austinites' CD single Pop Lie, due out

When describing new music it's common practice for music journalists/bloggers to simply drop a shortlist of influences betwixt a mountain of purple prose and call it good. It's lazy. I've done it. Yes, so-and-so sounds like the Kinks meets Pavement with a dash of Black Sabbath and a skosh of The Smiths (I must admit, that sounds like a great band). Artists make it easy by writing their own lists of influences on their MySpace pages. However, sometimes you end up with what a band wishes they sounded like, rather than what they actually [...]

The Strange Boys [MP3s] The Strange Boys - "Heard You Wanna Beat Me Up" The Faraway Places - "The Sun Goes West" Austin, TX's The Strange Boys are a tantalizing musical hybrid; evoking the inner-badassness of The Black Lips, coupled with nasally, falsetto vocals, and the grunge-pop arrangements of The Soft Pack, [...]
